this kinda got away from me and ended up super long and a bit rambly but hope you enjoy nonetheless! What were your favorite parts of the 11th oscar special?
Countless great moments, but "I don't like this bird" and Tim wailing on Mark with the wrench stand out (I can't explain why Tim being left-handed makes it funnier, but it does). The experience of following the live Reddit thread during "Movie Links" was also pretty amazing -- we all took the journey from confusion to realization to mortification together. Great video, as always!
I've had your stuff recommended to me for ages but I was not prepared for such high quality and awareness I saw in this, your first vid I've watched. I feel more confident in my own takes about this after hearing your thoughts. Awesome work, subscribed!
For me what really stood out as funny was Dekkar's performance with Corwin who did literally nothing for the song despite all the backlash from Tim and all the hype from the band
I never imagined I would log into a video about On Cinema to hear a reasonable comparison to Breaking Bad. Impressive. Also, it was somewhat rewarding to see one of the On Cinema Universe members just beat the hell out of Tim. It made this Oscar Special all worth it.
☝️ agreed. That bombshell (if I may be so bold) gave us an incredible button and climax to not just the day and the season, but the entire series up to this point.
The Robert De Niro edit was the funniest part for me, I tip my cap to Vic Berger for making those kind of unhinged edits for the Oscar Specials. His videos are masterful
Overall my favorite special is 5, but probably because Tim just absolutely unloads on the Rat Pack (98 movie) guys and just thinking about it makes me laugh out loud!
Every Oscars special is such a slow burn. I remember thinking the first Hei Network one (pre-ranch one) was kinda meh at the time but now it's maybe my favourite. Two after that are increasingly up there for me too. 'Pinocchio!'
21:22 Dropping that "Grime in my pipes" reference made my day. That is a deep cut among deep cuts when it comes to Tim and Eric related content. Every time you drop a reference, it come out hot.
Another fivebagger, dude. Great work as always. On Cinema at the Cinema 11S (s is for sequel) deserved the coverage. I really enjoyed AMATOCOM overall, despite it being really sad, depressing, not that funny, and no mark pork on set, these guys still pulled through. That ending, the tossing of Doonbiedore, Joe's anger, the proposal, the montage... So many brilliant things.
I think one thing about the special that deserves discussion is the fact that, for the first time ever, there is now a character (Joey) who does not gravitate towards Tim. Be it for money (Axe and Manuel), fame desperation (Joe), manipulation (Toni), or the fact that this is a series about reviewing movies (Gregg). Joey is the first outsider who sees Tim for what he is; a horrible person. The closest we've gotten to that was the trial, and those people needed to keep it professional.
We got a bit of that in this special, not only from Joey but also the half-asleep audience and Matt's video gamer buddy. It drives the point home* that Tim has a massive delusion of grandeur. (* Won't be driving it home in a used Dodge Charger though!)
Boy for all the unanswered questions left after amatocom, and matts murder, the Kaili/Joey interview and san Bernardino press conference answered almost everything
Since you genuinely asked, Mark was away filming more WWDIT Shadows so that's why he wasn't there for the live parts, and Hank in real life moved to Germany - which was nice of them to still include him and incorporate that into this Oscar special!
The fact the real life actors playing the Amatocon attendees could neither understand, nor find any value in what was going on, is just too good to be true! 😂😂
The charger review was 100% a shot at Tom Segura lmao, he ranted on Office Hours about how he's trying to sell everyone a car when Tom reviewed a Charger on his RUclips page. Which makes the skit 10 times more funny
Thanks as always. I did miss the tropes from previous years, like having an oscar-related guest and G. Regg's finales, but after so many years they needed to mix it up and I loved it.
Gregg's casual throwaway line of "Oh Mark's a tough guy, I'm sure he'll be fine" after hearing that Mark had been HIT BY A BUS was honestly one of my biggest laughs of the night lmao
To me the most transgressive thing they could do with these characters is to actually review the god damned movies in a meaningful way. Do a full season like that, and an actual Oscar special (no matter how boring the Oscar special would actually be). Then in the next season, return to insanity and never once address the 'normal' season.
Your videos make me so happy. I try to show and tell my friends how much I love the entire On Cinema Universe, but they don’t get it. Thank you for getting it 🙏
There's an anecdote in the "wrap party" video where Eric Notarnicola explained how complicated it was to pull off that quick moment on live video where you see Tim grab Joey's phone and scroll through the photos. Which is only more impressive when you realize it's a split second gag that only exists to make Gregg's proposal slightly more cringey. It's the tiny details like this that elevate On Cinema to the endlessly rewatchable masterpiece that it is.
I’m 16 seconds in, a fan from the beginning of the channel and 5 years with OC, and this has me so excited I cannot express the feeling further. It is like getting handed a huge helping of the best potato salad (or coleslaw!) I have ever had and hearing “Go at it!”
Was waiting for your upload! I still really enjoyed this Oscar special, even if it's not my favorite. It really felt like this one was more about furthering storylines than concluding them the way a lot of other specials do and I think that's why some people felt let down by it. I still enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to the new season. Great video as always!
Absolutely fantastic. Not only is it wonderful to have someone critically discussing On CInema in well-made long form videos, you're also reading into the text to a degree I hadn't considered and constantly raise points that would never have even crossed my mind. And I'm a fuckin filmmaking lecturer. 4 bags of popcorn, but an extra bag of popcorn for how giddy these make me - bringing the total rating to 5 bags of popcorn
Hey Admiral! Just wanted to say your vids have been super entertaining and incredibly helpful for onboarding my friends to the On Cinema universe (with very little coercion or trickery required). Keep up the great work!
Bobby Z is Robert Z'dar- an actor that was paired with Joe in C-grade films in the 80s-90s. Most memorably, in a film featured on MST3K called Soul Taker, which is the aforementioned photograph Joe is lamenting about during the convention.
this was, bar none, my favorite oscar special. And they’re always two-cup five-baggers (if not six). I honestly think it’s one of the funniest but as you say it requires being deeply steeped in this world as well as understanding, BYTHEWAY, the PBD spoof
I think Mark has been traumatized in some way during each special since his first attendance, including the HEI Ranch special, where Mark wasn't actually able to attend. I think it was another way of including him without him being there in person, and still physically traumatizing him at the same time. I loved it
I think the Mark Pork joke was to fill in for the fact that he’s filming for what we do in the shadows! Meta Tim was in toronto where they film it and i’m suspecting he’s gunna be in the new season as a cameo lol gregg was too in the last one playing an energy vampire! I highly recommend that show to any pork fans, he’s literally OC Mark but a vampire who steals energy instead of blood lol He’ll probably be back for the next oscar’s so that would make sense for the bad intel portion ~
also, I know OC has a lot of actual funds coming in which might be why they’re scaling up the production and storyline but I gotta be honest, I love the low budget and simple oscar specials the best. the ones where the production is trying to get them to laugh. the first one is one of my favourites for that reason alone lol but overall, all of them are so hilarious and i’m excited for whatever’s coming
So do people think Gregg really located the two trees from the Ma and Pa Kettle house at that Universal Park, or did he just pick a spot that looked similar for his bit? Either way, it's brilliant, as I do not know the answer. It does seem like those trees would have grown since the 50s, but what do I know?
I think 'buff' is one of the most ridiculous words in the English language. I can't help but chuckle every time I hear it. More so the more serious one is when using it.
I'm so glad you brought up Breaking Bad for comparison. Vince Gilligan's plan for Walter White was to turn Mr. Chips into Scarface, and I saw a similar route of transformation in Tim's character, as far as Mister America and season 11 at least, where we see him become this Donald Trump-like figure.
I love these types of videos, thank you for making them. Like you said in another one, you find things you didn't notice the first time when you rewatch them, and I feel the same way about these. Is there any hope for a retrospective video on the other Oscar Specials you haven't covered?
Thank you so much! To answer your question, yes. I have become really busy suddenly and haven’t had the time to do as much as I want, but I absolutely plan on getting through the rest of them eventually! I’m slowly working on my 5th annual video at the moment!
I only had to wait two days! Great video as always, it’s so hard to tell if the joke is Matt Newman is a horrible person and Tim made it up during a tantrum or there’s something else going on, but it doesn’t seem like tim would just accuse do that for no reason, as he has clearly been frustrated with the Amato family. I guess we’ll see. In the Oscar special, Matt’s friend says Tim is into weird stuff, do you think it was maybe the amatos or Tim who was doing the extortion?
I feel something fishy going on, before the San Bernardino attorney press coverage, I had believed wholeheartedly that G. Amato and his people were responsible for what happened with Matt, but apparently, that is not the case anymore, and I am suspecting Tim, of whom I always thought was just a dumb, clueless guy with a serious case of delusions of grandeur, and who gets involved with the wrong people, actually had an hand in this.
Your videos are so great man. When I'm feeling like enjoying on Cinema content; your reviews are nearly as satisfying as the baseline material. Just watched this video for the 2nd time. On the first go, I must have missed the 'Breaking Bad' comparison. I was recently thinking that Chaplin's Chili going international gave off similar vibes as 'Madrigal Electromotive,' the German company from Better Call Saul that ultimately served as a front for some deep black-market conspiracy-type deals.. Anyway thanks for what you do and keep up the excellent work 👏
Great breakdown of the latest Oscar Special. Really liked the clips intercut with G's AmatoCon ad at the beginning. The latest On the Funny episode made mention of everyone being worse off after coming into contact with Tim, which made me think of Walter White, so I think it's a fair comparison!
So many brilliant takes in here. I'm glad the On Cinema community has become more welcoming to [meta] commentaries over the past few seasons, because it really, really deserves it. And you're such a great voice in being able to make sense of all that's happening. I love your point about how we hope nothing truly bad happens to Tim, because if it did, we'd have this: Our Cinema. And the fact that what makes the show so funny (especially nowadays, since earlier seasons humor came from bad editing and dyslexia) is the contrast between such a depressing and dark reality and the banal content these two end up making.
No shot. The suspect motive from the DA makes no sense. Why would the dude be asking for Toni if he wanted to kill Matt? I think it's for sure corruption and them doing another fascinating turn making the formerly "good guy" DAs the bad guys.
Had to stop around 31:11- didn't realize the San Bernardino DA had the presser regarding the Newman shooting! Everything about the account lines up, but why did the the Joaquin Neville, the shooter, ask “is Toni home?” In the doorbell footage? Another example of prosecutorial ineptitude a la Rossetti the Rat? Well,, this time, it might be for real.(also seems a bit too open and shut for the masterpiece that is On Cinema, nothing is every quite as simple as it seems with such a layered show/experience)
11:19 YES!! That is one hundo percent one of my all time favorite OCAtC moments. Tim clearly was not mentally prepared for how off the rails those live edits and cuts were going to get.
No way! That will be awesome let me know how it is… I ran into him busking on the street one time with his puppets a couple years ago, I was so excited
I feel that the reason this insanity of show has keep going for so long its because to T and Gregg its such an open card for experimentation, which is why this is a great special, 5 popcorns rating
I was honestly surprised seeing Gregg so deflated - I was just waiting for the reveal that he never had any romantic interest in Kalli, he was just really stoked having someone to talk to about Harry Potter. It almost feels a bit out-of-character for him to show interest in something outside Hollywood and popcorn 😂
Gregg's particular love for rom-coms seemed to hint at a sentimental, soft-hearted side he kept well guarded, so it wasn't that surprising. Still hard to watch.
I think a lot of time the guy who plays G Amato goes into his real experiences as an actor.. he's talked about it on On Cinema before and I feel like that's just him as himself talking. probably it's kept in because he's obviously so natural when doing that and it sort of still works in-universe. based on that, I'm guessing the actor either was in merchant of venice at some point or used that monologue as his default audition piece, and as such they decided to incorporate that into the oscar special.
this kinda got away from me and ended up super long and a bit rambly but hope you enjoy nonetheless! What were your favorite parts of the 11th oscar special?

Gregg's particular love for rom-coms seemed to hint at a sentimental, soft-hearted side he kept well guarded, so it wasn't that surprising. Still hard to watch.

21:10 AS someone who grew up mormon, this hits exactly like a mormon hymn does, and his dress/look is exactly how mormons want to dress
"G Amato is no longer my father (in my opinion)"
I think a lot of time the guy who plays G Amato goes into his real experiences as an actor.. he's talked about it on On Cinema before and I feel like that's just him as himself talking. probably it's kept in because he's obviously so natural when doing that and it sort of still works in-universe. based on that, I'm guessing the actor either was in merchant of venice at some point or used that monologue as his default audition piece, and as such they decided to incorporate that into the oscar special.
The actors are so good!
