I had the same thing happen on mine 2017. Did not find out till engine blew up some of valve cover metal when in to engine ,had to have a new engine put in,,,John deer was supposed to put out recall but not in time to help me,,thanks for letting other know of this update
Thanks for the heads up. The band that holds the air filter housing to the bracket took a powder a few years ago I've just let it float there since. Next oil change I guess I'll pull the air filter housing and have a look at the cover..
WOW! I am looking at a 2017 1025r , I know the man and know he is one to take care of his stuff. Tractor has 250 hours on it. when I go to look at it, I'll be sure to check this out on it, I'll be surprised if he don't about this issue. Happy you caught it in time! John Deere should of made it right with you!
I’m okay with the 1025, it’s a good little tractor and I think John Deere did a really good job on its design. If I were to change anything I would probably go with the 2 series with a little more power. It is perfect for the size property I have. The only bad thing about having it is I’m always finding something else to do with it. 😆
I have a 1025r 2018 model year. John Deere update my air cleaner for nothing before anything broke. Also replaced PTO switch at same time. Said they were a recall item also.
I’ve had some trouble on mine also, thinking about a bypass on it so I don’t have anymore problems with it. I had to leave it in the rain one day and put it away in my barn. The switch rusted up and wouldn’t work. I sprayed some WD40 on it and it been working ever since. The next time it gets bypassed.
I to switched mine over to the new style after watching Tim’s video, it’s a shame John Deere didn’t do the right thing and do a actual recall on this problem .
It is a shame! You would think that John Deere being the Cadillac of the tractor world, would own up to that name and do the right thing. I think I would have fired some engineers over that design, even though it is a Yanmar engine it has the John Deere logo on it.
My 1025 has 756 hrs air cleaner been floating and ok since almost new it just lays there no biggie have loader and jd ballist box its my manure cattle feed tractor its a 2015 and has drive over mower deck its the real deal ❤
20K investment out the window in a snap, if you hadn’t caught it! My reason for doing my own basic maintenance whenever I can, because I can always accept responsibility for my own mistakes, but catch hell whenever someone else does it!
I agree with you! No one to blame but myself if I don’t pay attention to my equipment, and being mad at myself is a lot easier for me than being upset with someone else.
My 1025R had the same problem before I bought it. JD replaced the motor under warranty. When I bought it the previous owner had used a rubber bungee cord to hole the air filter in place.
Speaking for myself I don’t think it’s possible. The bracket was so heavy, and the cover that it’s mounted on is too thin to withstand the weight for a long period of time.
Just wanted to comment, Iv'e been running equipment since I was 8 (52 now) and knowing your machine will say you all sorts of problems. Weird new sounds, smells, or vibrations are a definite reason to stop and look. I own a 1025 R and I do all my own services and maintenance. That way the only one I can blame is me if it is not done right.
I had a rattle and noticed two of the 3 nuts holding the bracket were loose so I tightened them about a week ago. A short time before I would get a rough start now and then. Started looking around online and found this. Took my air cleaner off and found the bracket had broken. Valve cover looks OK but will clean it and check for any cracks. Bought the replacement parts from my local dealer. Really pisses my off Deere will not cover the cost. Say the PIP expired. I wonder if 'fix on fail' would cover it if I show them the broken bracket?
I don’t know, but it’s worth checking out. I have only found one other person that lost a motor because the air filter bracket broke off and went into the motor, and Deere replaced the motor. I’m learning that it was a poor design and I don’t know if it’s a Deere problem or a Yanmar problem, but poor design none the less! The rough start up was explained to me as a typical Yanmar three cylinder engine, and the really hard start up could be the fuel filter needs replacing. You’ll have one next to the engine, under the floor, and a screen filter in your fuel tank. Good luck my friend!
@@EverybodySecretlyLovesSteve I have replaced the primary fuel filter (runs better) but still have a rough start 'sometimes'. Going to replace the inline one today. Pulled the valve cover and found stress lines so will replace that also. Do you happen to know the torque specs for the cover?
@jimkramer4001 what I found 11 inch pounds, and I used a small amount of the blue lock tight. I went back after and checked them after running it around 8 hours and everything seemed okay.
I too have a 2018 with 506 hrs on it. Only found out this new relocation kit when I was looking for a new rubber strap that broke when changing the air filter. So now I have $60 in filters that are new and can't return.
That rubber strap is a piece of junk, JD should have stepped up and made it good to their customers. The story I got from my JD dealership is that it’s Yanmar’s design and their problem.
I did, I was told the cover with gasket was over 150. I think this dealership has had some problems in the past about being honest with customers before. I guess I’m going to have to invest in some bib coveralls and look like a farmer 😂
You need to order the quick bolt for the side panels instead of having an actual bolt/nut. Far easier. Just turn them 1/4 turn and pull out and the panel comes off. I think 2018+ models have those now. Believe this is the part number LVU22998 I think you are good, but that oil cap on the side can rub on the radiator hose and poke a hole in it. But I yours looks good and is more vertical. Mine oil cap is horizontal when tight and almost wore a hole in that radiator hose. I just took the Dremel and shaved the oil cap a little and zip tied another piece of rubber hose around the radiator hose to protect it some.
Thanks for the info, I’ll check on the cap, I just got through doing the oil change. I found a stick that wedged itself between my mower deck and pushed the hydraulic line up into my drain plug, and caused a pin hole in my line. I couldn’t see the stick until I took the deck off.
I agree, but the JD dealership I got it from went out of business. The new dealership refused, and said that they were not aware of any issues with the 1025R.
It’s a 2018 model, my understanding is that it was changed in 2019 models. And no John Deere would not admit that there was a problem with that model design. They blamed it on the engine design, which is Yanmar.
Mine is a 2018 model, I’m not sure what year models are effectived. If your air filter is mounted on top of the motor by three studs, I would look at replacing it to the one that is mounted to the front behind the radiator. I believe that type of filter is on the 1023,1025, and the 1035 models. I don’t know what year they changed it.
How many hours are in your tractor? I too have a 2018 1025R. Mine has the updated mount and it was installed by the original owner. I've now got about 700 hours on mine. Mine has recently developed a loud mechanical rattle when the engine shuts down and you can also hear it a bit on starting too. I can't figure out what is causing the noise though. It is not the filter mount.
At the time this happened I was at 318 hours. I’ve noticed that sound also, I was thinking it a Yanmar thing. As long as the fluids are up, I think it’s safe, but I’ve never owned a diesel engine before.
You should get the new bracket, just to keep it from shaking the filter during run time. The intake is not strong enough to withstand the weight of the filter by itself. Take my advice, that intake is paper thin.
I have a 2018 and if the air cleaner is bolted to the top of the engine you should look to change it. The intake cover is not strong enough to withstand the constant shaking. Greenparts.com is where I found mine.
Wow what a bad design, cantilevering that big bracket so far off of what’s probably a die cast valve cover! No doubt when you’ve worked on one of these, there are cracker-jack degreed engineers and designers behind such nonsense. My older 1026R mounts the air-filter case to the front bulkhead using a much more elegant steel hoop. Not connected to the valve cover. The three bosses exist in the valve cover but are unused, no threaded studs.
A magnet wouldn’t have worked, the metal was aluminum. I think I was able to get the metal parts out, cause I was able to put it back together with no pieces missing. If anything there may have been some very small slivers pieces I may have missed. I’ve done two oil changes since then and I have not seen any fragment in the oil, and the motor seems to be working properly.

Good luck! I hope you don’t have any problems, and the new filter kit was real easy to put together. I got mine at Green Parts on the internet.

I have a JD 790 it's totally different than that model it's 27 hp 4wd since about 2008
I'm real happy with it.

checking mine tomorrow
My 1025R had the same problem before I bought it. JD replaced the motor under warranty. When I bought it the previous owner had used a rubber bungee cord to hole the air filter in place.
I wonder if you could use some rubber washers under the bracket to absorb some of the vibration good save nice work 😊
Speaking for myself I don’t think it’s possible. The bracket was so heavy, and the cover that it’s mounted on is too thin to withstand the weight for a long period of time.
Those garden tractors are nice. Easy to work on.
A big thank you for this video

Thanks for video
Thanks took mine off still good Thanks again
The vavle cover is only $33 at Deere. you probably spent more getting the old one welded up.

JD should cover this RECALL!
I agree, but the JD dealership I got it from went out of business. The new dealership refused, and said that they were not aware of any issues with the 1025R.
This is an older model, right? My 2019 1025R filter housing is different. Did JD fixed the issue?
It’s a 2018 model, my understanding is that it was changed in 2019 models. And no John Deere would not admit that there was a problem with that model design. They blamed it on the engine design, which is Yanmar.
What year of the 1025R is impacted with this problem?

Probly a u joint in the drive line going from engine to the transmission
Interesting but your music driving me crazy.
I'll never understand why youtubers add annoying music or music of any kind to these instructional videos. Maybe youtube requires it.😮
I have a 2017 with over 1000.00 hours on it my air filter bracket and strap has broken two times I left the bracket off
You should get the new bracket, just to keep it from shaking the filter during run time. The intake is not strong enough to withstand the weight of the filter by itself. Take my advice, that intake is paper thin.
How many hours on your tractor
When I found the damage I think it was 318 hours, I have put another 50 hours on it after the repair.
What year is your John Deere 1025R? What years are affected by this problem. I bout my John Deere 1025R in 2015. Great video.
I have a 2018 and if the air cleaner is bolted to the top of the engine you should look to change it. The intake cover is not strong enough to withstand the constant shaking. Greenparts.com is where I found mine.
@@EverybodySecretlyLovesSteve Thank you so much.
Is that replacement filter assembly originally for another tractor model or is it an updated part for your model tractor?
Greenpartstore.com. It’s a replacement made for John Deere. Highly recommend you get one for yours if you have the 1023, or 1025.
Also seem odd that there is that bunch vibration there as well
Everything I have learned about the engine is that it’s known for its vibrations. They are very good motors, but they are known for the vibration.

Buy a yanmar 325 much better tractor
Go Vols!
That’s right! Vol for life!
You should’ve put a magnet down those ports instead of a piece of duct tape.

Aluminum is not magnetic unfortunately
I didn’t realize it was aluminum. That’s probably the reason it broke in the first place.
Just 1more reason not to buy JD.
