      Good analogy, almost no one charged a pike formation, or even a spear formation for that matter. even in heavy armor the chances of surviving in such an attack is slim to none.
      the way to beat pike formations is to shoot at them from afar, throw javelins at them with you infantry and break in the parts that are too thin after harassment. If there is no such opening the infantry try to hold them in place and move backwards as the formation marches slowly towards them, and the flanking forces have to do the rest.

      Actually Pikes we’re out of style by the early medieval period. Most factions were using the shield wall method of combat with Germanic spatha and shield, sometimes with an axe or mace.
      This continued until the end of the early medieval period where the early prototype knights began to win one too many battles and that is where long lances and spears were reintroduced particularly starting with the Scottish under William Wallace where they would use the schiltrons to defeat English Cavalry at Stirling Bridge.

      @@stonem0013 Actually the Roman legion is well capable of taking on long pikes. With missiles they carry, like the pila, javelin and later on darts, missile fire would tear away at the pikes.
      The high mobility of the legions meant that they will always outflank and out maneuver slow moving phalangites.
      The so called "pike" would again by used by the late Roman military legions who were armed with lances or 2 to 3m heavy spears in their Comitatensis heavy legionary cohorts.
      The Byzantines also were using these formations well into the 6th century under Justinian.
      Sidearms would be spathas, axes, maces, clubs etc....
      However they would not use the phalanx at the hip level for thrusting. Instead it is held at shoulder level to jab at Germanic heavy cavalry or Hunnic heavy cavalry.
      Still when up in melee combat, the lances would lodge into enemies, piercing them. Resulting in relinquishing the lances, to form a shield wall with spathas and other smaller close in weaponry.
      The late Roman and Byzantine did use a medium phalanx but was hybridized with the Roman shield wall system and close in melee, shield wall style of combat tactic

    problem is there's way too many ranged units in Attila for your pike line to stay alive

    • @Elsneakakaze
      @Elsneakakaze 8 месяцев назад

      This guy has actually played! But 1 or two pikemen can be clutch if you shield them with a good sbield unit

    • @fuckhandles1233
      @fuckhandles1233 8 месяцев назад

      @@Elsneakakaze Also depending on who you're playing as, for example for the ERE, your only pikes are going to be golden tier 3 units that AI will prioritize on targetting over your silver tier 2 shield units, which makes it even harder to keep them alive. The can be incredibly useful in sieges though

      I played as Sparta, so my armies had like 8 spartan hoplites, general's hoplites, 3 spartan pikes, 3 slinger heliots and two tarentin cavs.
      I had slingers in front, then back tham fast behind line of hoplites and in this line of hoplites in falanga, I had the three, realy thin, units of pikes. I could get like 400+ kills with each pike unit. And I used slingers and cav to go around enemy flanks. Slingers to shoot to the backs and sides of the enemy infantry engaged with mine (slingers could get hundreds of kills like that) and cav to charge enemy skirmishers.
      Only tough oponents were Thracians, bcs they had full stacks of really fast javelimen. I could not catch them with hoplites and they were really deadly with each waley of javelins killing tenths of hoplites

      Well, the piles are alright but this here is a combination of charge reflect with the charging long axe unit having terrible defense.
      Braced pikes like this in Attila reflect the charge of a unit back on itself essentially, meaning that these longaxe units who have EXCELLENT charge basically get shredded by their own excellent charge bonus

    • @undary0u
      @undary0u 6 месяцев назад

      Probably because the enemy's need not have ranged troops for this this to work if they do say goodbye to your pikes thier gonna get shredded insanely fast due to how good ranged units are in attila

    Привет, мой американский брат) я тоже обожаю использовать пикинеров, но послушай меня: если ставишь пикинеров, то ставь перед ними тяжелую пехоту с копьями они примут на себя удар дротиков, а потом ты их оставляешь на месте в стене щитов, а пикинеров вперед двигаешь. И получается идеальная тактика, + можно мечников в бой отправить или топорников с флангов
