  • In this video we look at one of the greatest achievements and legacies of the Italian Renaissance: libraries. When scholars in the 1400s read about the quantity and availability of books in ancient Rome-which had twenty public libraries-they wanted to put together the same kinds of collections for themselves. The result was a series of public libraries founded in Florence, Cesena and Rome, as well as the ‘greatest library since Antiquity’-that of Federigo da Montefeltro in Urbino. All of these libraries made knowledge more widely available to scholars, serving as one of the driving forces behind the period of creative investigation that we call the Italian Renaissance.
