Without a good understanding of who your character is and how it moves, the video reference approach can sometimes produce an undesirable impression that your character is moving like a guy inside a mascot suit, instead of feeling like a real thing, with its own physicality, musicality and particularities.
It can also feel like it’s too real or rotoscoped, depending on how close you get to “copy” your reference.
That been said I still believe it is one of the easiest ways to approach an acting shot successfully, and I’m fully dependent on it. But I think it’s important to learn how to work around its limitations.
Here are a few things I like to keep in mind while working with video reference:
How would this character perform the emotions, movements and gestures portrayed in the reference?
How are the poses and the transitions between poses? Is there a way to improve them and introduce entertainment value?
And more important, how to translate this human acting/action into this character’s world and general behavior?
The key word here is translation. We have to be able to adapt and adjust the video reference input for our character’s way of moving and acting. Translating it instead of copying it.
Musicality also plays an important role into this translation process. Dialogue tracks for animation are usually very rich in melody and rhythm, they paint a clear texture in the shot’s overall emotion and performance, and ignoring or not pushing it far enough could be a mistake.
Every pause, breath, grunt and beat is there for you to use in your favor, incorporating those into your scene will enhance the feeling that your character is indeed alive and therefore your audience will have a deeper connection with it.
These are shots that I’ve worked on for ralph breaks the internet
The first two shots were originally blocked by the amazing @chauychau. @darrinbutters provided hilarious performances for Ralph and the Bunny. This sequence almost didn’t make to the movie because of story changes, but it was later used in a trailer and the directors finally decided to bring it back as final credits appearance.
