    If you had low compression across all cylinders. Put some oil in cylinders and try it again rings may be stuck if it's been sitting along time. Most likely you're looking at a full rebuild though.

    Two things on the motor. If it’s sat for a while check the tell tale for blockage. That is usually the first issue. Regardless the impeller needs to be replaced if it’s sat for a couple of years. Based on my manuals compression should be around 90-110 on the optimax. Don’t be surprised if a good systems cleaning and new water pump kit doesn’t do wonders for that outboard. Also it’s best to test compression after your motor has ran for about 5-10 minutes so that it’s warm and everything (piston rings etc) is sealing well. Learned that the hard way and almost sold someone a rebuild when I was starting out.
    That boat as is in Arkansas goes for 8,500 all day long. So I’ll make that my guess even though you’re farther north.

    Put Aquatraction or similar material on the floor in the cockpit area. You have experience replacing seats. I suggest doing a step box in the middle instead of a seat. As mentioned C&O marine is a great place for parts including windshield. Looking forward to watching the progress. As a Stratos owner you have a great rig

    Run a stiff wire or weed wacker string up through the pee hose. Sometimes bees or bugs build nests in there and all you need to do is clear it out. Great looking rig. Good luck 👍

    $4100. Love my Stratos... mine is affectionately known to many as "the ugliest boat on the water" and it is most of the time. However! I'm in the middle of a major overhaul that started off as carpet/seats/graph/trolling motor upgrade and has turned into new electronics, rebuilt carbs, new lower unit, new live well pumps/valves/hoses new bilge pumps, and a 4th 12V battery in one of the rear storage compartments that is dedicated to just the new Helix 15, the old Helix 7 which is now at the helm, and one of the two bilge pumps (I have dual 750 GPH pumps, each powered by a different battery for the obvious benefits in an emergency) Also, did I mention the carpet padding? Dude! It's more comfortable than my living room now! SOOO worth the extra money! Can't wait to see what you are able to do with this one!

    If by chance you have to repower you should look into a partnership with Chris Carson marine and document their process in pulling your powerhead and having them rebuild and installing. I believe using them and doing labor yourself will save thousands of $$. I had to pull my powerhead and do some work last year and there was very little info on RUclips for that. It’s easier than I thought, and the added aspect of sending it out for repair and re-installing would be awesome for people who can do it but don’t know the process. Your other boat build was great and well documented. So I could see that being a big hit too. Since it runs, but low compression there’s a chance they could save it pretty cheap. Just my thoughts.

  • @chrisbruce7594

    Put in a new impeller in it then fix up a gallon jug of sefoam and gas mixture I would start with twice the amount if seafoam the is recommended per gallon and run it through the engine only after you replace the impeller and get it cycling water then just let it idle the gallon of mixture through it then check the compression again. It might just be sticky rings and the seafoam should free them up.. I've gotten 4 engines that were supposed to need rebuilt because of low compression and all 4 come up to 125-135 ans ran like new after a couple of gallon mixtures ran through them. Can't wait to see more about this boat.

It's an easy fix (if thats what the problem is) and can bee one of the cheapest fixes there is...when you think it is something almost disastrous. Take off the tibe and find out if it's got obstruction. Done.

    • @flyhog8574
      @flyhog8574 Год назад

      It may not be that low. If he’s going off of the specs for a Johnson the specs are quite a bit lower for an optimax than what is in spec compression on an OMC outboard.
      Mine is supposed to be around 115 my father in laws optimax is suppose to be between 90-100 based on my service manual guides. The biggest thing is do all the cylinders match within 10%

    3500$$... check compression again with a different gauge..different brand gauges will show different readings.. id change the impeller out regardless being its sat for 2 years. Also clean out the water hoses on the heads, the pisser hose, very possible mud dobber have got up in there and blocked the flow of water. Pull the thermostats and check them as well.

  • @chrisshepherd1921
    @chrisshepherd1921 Год назад

    @TightlineTV would like to know how you conducted the compression test? Test should be performed in the following manner.
    When performing compression tests, it's imperitive that the tests be done with:
    -A fully charged and PROPERLY RATED cranking battery
    -Engine warmed up to Operating Temperature
    -Kill switch OFF
    -All Spark Plugs Removed
    -Plug wires on Spark Tester (or grounded with jumper leads- an added precaution)
    -Throttle plate at the WOT Position
    -Water supplied to the engine while cranking!
    Insert compression tester into #1 spark plug opening, and crank the engine until the reading no longer rises. Record reading. DO NOT spin/crank for longer than 10 seconds at a time.
    Repeat above step for each cylinder. (credit for above - EuropeanAM from bassboat central)
    Compression specs: 90-110 psi, MAXIMUM variance of 15 psi between highest and lowest cylinders. My guess -- $6250
