Bypassing the Window Motor Switch on my BMW e36 318ti

  • The comfort control module on my BMW e36 failed but I need to close the windows. Here's how I worked around the module failure in a very unsafe way that you absolutely should not do.

    Hiya folks! Applying power to the window motor isn't that crazy of an idea but the way I did it with a LiPo battery was NOT safe and I do not recommend it! Instead, find another power source that doesn't include two hot contacts right next to each other. 💥

    While you did succeed you were right about the safety of using such a battery.
    These type of batteries have a very high energy density and are capable of delivering 100+ amps. For "functional reasons" they are unprotected.
    If you are considering doing this kind of "experiment" more often I would suggest contacting someone with the skills and tools to build this battery in a little box and put an automotive 10A fuse in series with the (more conventient type of) output. That way you get a more rugged battery (as LiPos by themselves are prone to physical damage) and in case you mess up you don't vaporize your (or the cars) wiring. 10A will be plenty for all kinds of little things in a car save running the starter motor 😅
    Yes, that battery you're holding there might be able to crank the engine, given the right connections and wiring-size of-course.

      I've heard that these LiPo batteries have enough ooph to crank the engine over.. I'd love to try that sometime haha. You think I should rig up a harness with a fuse for it though?

      @@Egeexyz For cranking that is a bit hard. For everything else I would reccommend a 10A fuse in series just to be on the safe side if you're planing to use it to test more things. Fried wiring and/or fire is something that will complicate things when you're trying to fix stuff.

      to be fair, using thin gauge alligator clamp wires are effectively identical to a fuse lol.

    You could prob do smth with an rpi watching the switches for input and a relay hat to control the motors

      Actually i wonder if theres a canbus hat so you can use the original wiring harness...

      I would LOVE to use a rpi (ergo, LINUX) to power this stuff but pragmatically, an arduino or even switching a simple relay would work fine here
