This movie gets a bad rap. It's actually quite good, from the director of The Candidate and The Bad News Bears. It's involving, violent, and never boring. It also has IMO one of the greatest climaxes ever made. It doesn't cop out. Without spoiling it, Caine gets into trouble, and it's up to Caine alone to try and get out of it. Highly recommended!

This movie didn't get the cult it deserves.

It is not a terrible movie and has poignant moments. It was part of that era of adventure ocean filmography, Jaws, The Deep, Jaws II, Death Ship......and my favorite horror movie Shock Waves with Peter Cushing.
The plot is more sort of like a marooned Viking cult more than pirates. However the pirate nest (with Windsor being den father) was practiced throughout the Atlantic seaboard during American colonial times (1570-1740) rings true to a historical context. But Windsor seems to be more interested in some sort of anthropology curio show to keep himself entertained.
    Post Script:
This movie probably did not bode well for Coast Guard Recruiting in 1977.
The inbreeding angle does make sense but they would be more bizarre knuckle draggers after 400 years of interacting each other.
The clan did not all die off as Beth was pregnant.

Was in the Movie Channel in the early 80s. Michael Caine seemed to be in a string of movies around this time, Dressed to Kill, The Island, The Hand etc.

0:30- Look, it's The Hills Have Eyes meets The Fog. Just go along with it.
1:09- Another film released on June 13, 1980 warned you to stay away from The Children.
1:31- The Island is here to thrill the hell out of you Jaws style, only replace the sharks with a boatload of pirates, and explosions, WAY more explosions.

They did make another movie entitled 'The Island' but it's NOT a "remake" or a "sequel" to this one.
This one takes place in the not too distant future and it stars Ewen McGregor & Scarlett Johansson ...

This preview was playing over and over again in Circuit City in 1982 when I bought my first VCR. Weird.

Death Ship was more creepy than this movie. Not to mention that Death Ship was filmed in Canada.

I loved the book and was disappointed with the movie. They took a book about a group of people fighting for their right to live their lives the way they want to. But, the movie turns into a horror movie for thinking people 🤔.

Yeah but unfortunately the right to live the way they want to means murdering hundreds of innocent people so they don't get that right

That's true but the way they want to live their lives involves murdering hundreds of innocent people so they lose that right
