As a 20 year vet and so many deployments it's so insane how this song has been with me since I was young not really knowing the meaning at 6 years old and knowing all to well the price we paid at 18-38 years old. Thanks for the react.
Girl, you got to me. Your beautiful words and the way YOU describe the song, along with your backing music made me cry. This is one of my favorite songs by Metallica and this is my fav reaction to it. ❤❤
Now that you've seen and heard the original song, you REALLY need to watch the official video. It dives quite a bit deeper into the story. It was based on the movie "Johnny Got His Gun," and the song tells the story quite well, but the music video gives a lot more context to the actual story
At least someone who doesn't make the mistake reacting the first time to the video version. Video is great but the it is distracting from the music when people hear that for the first time.
This is one of the most enjoyable songs for reaction videos. It creates a war within the listener between enjoyment of the beauty and power of the music vs the gut-wrenching subject matter of the lyrics. You almost feel bad about enjoying it! This reaction was great because the conflict was written all over your face.
This song is a metal staple and a metal anthem. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. More needs to be done to help our veterans. They risk their lives to ensure our freedom and they get thrown away by the very country they've sworn to protect. I know WAY too many homeless veterans. Thanks for playing this song.
War needs to be fought between the ones that start it. As Serj from SOAD would say, “why don’t presidents fight the wars, why do they always send the poor”
Being almost 52 years old and growing up probably the biggest Metallica fan on the planet(I've seen them 9 times) you're reaction is exactly what I expected it to be and you couldn't have picked a better song One being they're breakthough song. You should look into more of old school Metallica and if you keep reacting the way you did in this video your a true metal head lol. God bless you girl and keep up the great work and God bless America 🇺🇲.
@@kesleycottrell1416 I wish I could have seen them when cliff was still alive, he was the whole reason I became a metal head. Back then when I would write letters to my girlfriend I would sign them M/R/A, Metallica Rules Always lol.
I have watched dozens and dozens of reaction videos to this song. You are literally the first person to really seem to understand the message and take it to heart. The musicianship of this song is beyond belief amazing! And most people get caught up in that. You heard the message and listened to the lyrics and understood what James was trying to get across. When you hear slogans like support our veterans people ignore it. They don't really understand it because they did not experience it personally. Only have combat vet understands a combat vet. I think you came pretty damn close. First video I saw of yours and I absolutely appreciate you!
It's amazing how many of these hard-rock/metal songs are actually anti-war, violence, and really about peace. Although they sound so aggressive, and menacing, songs like "2 Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden, and Ozzy's "Crazy Train", lyrically are about the evils of war, greed, and exploitation.
Another like from Canada... glad you caught this one... i would ask you watch the actual video, it is epic and actually makes the song even deeper... there are a lot of clips from a movie called "Johnny got his gun" filmed in 1971, from the book written in 1938 or '39, which mate to this song perfectly
Although I agree, I think she was right in doing a first time listen with just the song. I've found that some people tend to get distracted because of the dialogue from the movie clips.
Canadian lady here. My great grandfather was lost in WW2. I say lost because his remains were never found, he went missing in Normandy and his name is on the Vimy wall. When I think about him I always pray that when he went missing he did not suffer long before he died, and always wonder if he was alone when it happened. No family should ever have to think of things like this. Yet it still happens every day, that breaks my heart. My grandfather was only a young child when his dad went to war and never got to see him again. My dad never met his grandfather. To this day my dad who is 80 years old hopes by some miracle the remains will be found because many other remains have actually been found. Thank you Sarah for you beautiful reaction. XO
I love your after analysis and emotional thoughts. Very beautiful words! You have an amazing ability to understand and feel art, and I thank you so much for gracing us with your touching expressiveness! Subscribed!
My husband was a medic in Iraq and told me a heartbreaking story about a devout young man in his care - not much more than a boy, really - from SomeSmallTown, USA, newly married to his high school sweetheart, and completely naive to the great big world. Anyway, this young man's vehicle was hit by an IED, and... well, you can imagine the damage that was done. Both legs were lost, as well as a portion of one arm and serious damage to his face and shoulder. The injuries were extensive, the recovery period promised to be excruciating, and he was just lucky not to have suffered any serious brain damage. One particularly difficult night, this young man begged my husband, with tears streaming down his face, to end his life because he couldn't bear the thought of going home in this condition. My hubby reminded him that he had been lucky to avoid brain damage, and that a loving family and wife awaited him and they would take good care of him. This made the man cry even harder. Sensing there was something more going on, my hubby pressed the man to tell him exactly what was upsetting him so much, and the answer was absolutely heartbreaking. The explosion had mangled his male parts and he would never have normal intimacy again, nor would he be able to have any natural offspring. He was devastated for his future with his new wife, convinced she would leave him, and even saying that she should marry someone else. So young, so sheltered, and now so damaged. And most of that damage done was so visually obvious, but it was the unseen injury that was causing him the most heartache. War wounds run very deep, often deeper than we realize.
Great reaction and interpretation Sarah. To get a full impact of the song watch the official video on your own. It has clips from the movie, Johnny Got His Gun which play right along with the song. Check out Disposable Heroes, it has the same theme as this. Also Welcome Home(Sanitarium), Fade to Black, and Ride the lightning
Thank you for really understanding what this song means. War is horrible and the effects of war last for generations. So much unnecessary death caused by greedy people. I’m a first time viewer and I’m now going watch your other reactions. Love to all y’all! ❤️
Another powerful anti-war song you will love is "Child in Time" by Deep Purple. Child in Time is dedicated to the civilians and children trapped by war. In the live performances you can see how much emotion the singer puts into it.
This is a video you have to watch. Without copyright reaction stuff. On your own. Mtv used to actually play music videos. And concert tickets were affordable.
So this song was intended as a tribute to bassist Cliff Burton who died in bus accident outside of Oslo, Sweden during the master of puppets tour. The song is based a on book and movie cliff like whoes name escapes me, but the premise was of a young American sent to fight in the hell that was WW1, where he lost speech, hearing, control of his arms and legs was kept alive through artificial means just to prove it could be done. Still to this day this song hit hard and the crowds enjoy the song
WWI was a vicious mesh of classic war and modern technology, and it didn't end well for the soldiers on the line. The images of the men the war broke is heartbreaking. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Just an absolute terror.
Thanks a lot for your reaction. You should watch one with the video--you'll have images that will make you understand why the guy so much want to die. And old Metallica as well: in particular For whom the bell tolls (live--Day on the green 1985), or Master of puppets (lyrics or the original video). For more with original bassist Cliff Burton, try Anasthesia--live Chicago 1983, that will blow your mind. Have a nice day.
Well…..as I told you now you have to react to the video to “One” and put it up here on your channel. I personally guarantee you that you will be even more touched and impressed by the best band ever…Metallica 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘….
You almost got the meaning of the song, it wasn't about many soldiers getting injured by land mines it was a true story about one guy that lost his arms, legs, sight, hearing and his ability to speak. "One" guy that lost all that and they saved his life only for him to be forever alone and a prisoner of his own mind. The song is a tragedy about how war made that guy suffer not just when he went to war but a lifetime of suffering because of the war. Like many others that don't lose as much of what he lost but still suffer a lifetime because of what they went through. This song even though it is a very sad story actually helped a lot of Veterans of foreign wars after learning how things could of turned out worse for them. And do you remember when I told you about the incredible instrumentals they are capable of, this is one of many many more you have to explore.(one, pun intended, LOL) It's looking like maybe you're becoming a big fan of Metallica?
Actually it is about the movie "Johnny get your gun." And as far as I know it's not a true story, though many people who have seen war feel it relates to them.
Watch the music video to fully understand what ONE means. They use the most powerful WW1 movie in the video. What soldiers feel when left behind and abandoned in front of everybody
