In my latest attempt during TDZ stage 3 I did it in 53:32 after using some of the tips such as push on the steeper sections. I also did the same on the corners. It was better with lots of riders to chase early on and then paced to the summit.
just found your channel today before my mega pretzel Haute Route stage 3 ride. Thanks for the tips mate! And nice power output up the ADZ! a strong effort for sure
As always, the insight you provide is incredible Ed. Love the talk about your HR....mine is normally high 170s - low 180s from the 5th min ..... And the negative split is something that resonates. It’s learning when to time the extra investment of energy which you are master of 👌
i know Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I love any help you can offer me
Thanks Ed, I’m going to ride the Alp in the next week or two again looking for a PB. Hope you did give it a shot again or have❤❤ I know it’s been 2 years since you made this
Just done my first and it took 88 mins (well 86 if you don’t count the plonker who rang my doorbell to ask if I wanted to buy some fish!). Love these tips
Thanks for this Ed, as a new rider, Alp De Zwift is pretty intimidating, but your breakdown makes sense for me to apply the same approach to my limits. Great video :)
What will be the psychological effects of doing this at a 100% trainer level? I can see how adjusting trainer level down allows you to keep a more constant cadence and allows you to sit the whole time. It changes a mountain into a long time trial.
Sooo...when's the next attempt? :P On a more serious note, what have you learned from the first one that you could potentially try to implement differently on a new attempt? Say, could some changes be made to the pacing? At the time you mentioned you could've maybe gone harder at an earlier stage, and as has already been mentioned, maybe even taking a more aggressive pacing approach for the first kms rather than a linear pacing strategy? Does pacing on Zwift differ from outside in any significant way, in terms of setting the fastest time?
Thanks Ed. Really interesting to hear your breakdown. Would you like to do a fully prepped attempt at 33 minutes? It's for me a bit like the hour record youd need to properly prepare but I'd love to see it properly targeted with your very best effort. My utopia is under the hour ( 55 years old 74kg cycled 3 years)
I'm fifty years old, I started cycling in 2016, after an injury in my knee playing soccer. My best time is 52 minutes. It's possible. You can do it. Disclaimer I have the advantage to be a short rider 155cm 58Kg. But you can do it.
What is your gearing on the bike On the the ride up the Alpe? What gears do you drove in? Do drive one the big or small chainring. Mine is 50/34 - 11/32 10 speed. Thanks for a very good Chanel💪🚵♀️ What a time!
Osbourne is focusing on the olympics. A shame for cycling but respect. My mate here in Germany knows him. Osbourne lives near me (near Frankfurt). He has the KOM up the Feldberg, the main climb in the Eschborn-Frankfurt annual UCI event, despite not benefitting from the draft that the pros enjoy every year. And check out his time on the real Alp D'Huez. Phenomenal natural talent :)
Made me Fell Better about my effort, with the statement, "anyone that goes under an hour is respectable" as I just made it inside that hour, but 34 minutes seems insanely egregiously impossible:)
There's no pacing up the Alpe, it's all in you head, how much your are prepared to suffer. You didn't pace it yourself, it was pretty much max effort all the way, seeing the end you gave everything (that's the tough part). PRs are llinked to the suffer limit, equipment (you could have done better with the lightweights and the Ceramic Speed upgrade) and trainer difficulty. You need to set it so that the power you can sustain over the time it takes to go up is done at around 90rpm. Setting the difficulty too low will not produce sufficient power to best your time so something around 50%+ is recommended. Well done I admire you, wish I was your age (I'm more like 2 times your age).👍
Very informative Ed thanks :) was thinking - why not be a little more aggressive next time, hit it conservatively harder (400-420W) at the steeper bottom part to the village (first 5 bends?) recover a bit on the flatter part, then push on keeping an eye on HR? You will be ahead of PR pace, then the challenge would be to keep or extend the difference in the final push to the top. Just a thought and you are the expert :)
I will try it in training, in shorter blocks, like just going for half of the Alpe and seeing how much time advantage gives me. Have to be careful as there is still another 12min to go if you are on the limit after just 20min :)
Great insights right there Ed, so if a mere mortal as myself would attempt it would i need to just aim for Just below threshold pace or something else?
How about doing threshold efforts on the even stretches then doing sweet spot power on the odd stretches. Would this kind of power delivery be of use. My current best time is 53:50 or there abouts so am really looking at getting a 50 min time
Is it better to pace the tougher bottom part of the first 6-7 turns and then empty the tank on the rest? Are there segments, areas that you can make up time? Best time is around 55, goal is 50.
4wkg needed for 50min. That’s a great goal! For an effort as long as this one with very little areas to gather free speed I’d say starting off slightly below goal pace is best. Using the hairpins countdown make it easier to pace it. I did 2 x 5km sections and the last 2.5km as hard as I could go
@@edlaverack thank you for the quick response. 4wkg is a lofty goal, going to have to bury myself for that effort but what the hell. I’m right around 200lbs and 6’2 and not a fat 200, so can’t lose any weight really. Going to be a mental battle...the target of what watts it would take is really going to help. Thanks again!!!
I’m a spinner - went up it In 50 mins on trainer difficulty 50% .. do you think lowering it to say 40 % would help get me under 50 . I hate grinding gears
I’m just very happy riding my bike, setting myself challenges and making things fun. Wherever that takes me I don’t mind, so long as I continue to enjoy pushing myself and making RUclips videos 🙂btw, I don’t even ride for a continental team anymore. I stepped down last year so that I could have more freedom with racing hill climbs and such⛰
Very good watch m8 and for being good at it, you coming across as a very down to earth kind of a guy. I personally think 4 weetabix is cheating but we better not go there. ;-)
I have tried it 3 times and close to the 60 minutes on the last one. That is my aim. Some great information thanks.

doing adz on less then 100% doesnt count.
Top work man, this is awesome - thank you. Well done on the ride.
Thank you!
The biggest tip is get yourself to put out 6 watts/Kg for 34 minutes. 😉

Love the way you explain thing Ed you make it easy to understand, It makes you a really good coach.
This is the video I need to watch

Yes I most certainly would Steve. It would take a specific build and taper as you say a bit like the hour record

Thank you. I use a 53-39 and 11-28. I was in the big ring here but had trainer difficulty down around 35%

9th on Alpe D'Huez all-time. 40mins (Zwift climb is easier) www.strava.com/segments/652851/compare/NjQ3ODM2MDgxNDksNDI5MjI1MjcwNjE=
Ed's mate Andrew Feather has 39:56. Challenge on?
The challenge was on this year. Postponed now
What a start!! 💪💪👌👌👌🧡
What cassette is the best for this challenge?
Any, but the bigger the better just to give you that range
Sick intro mate! Also nice video!

There would be a slight assist. Correct.

Yep, just below
Hey Ed - I have dropped you an email regarding an Alpe Du Zwift race tonight. Hoping you can make it. Keep up the damn fine work !!

If you want to avoid that grind then I’d say yes👍🏼good time sub 50!!
How do you keep the power up in the flatter corners? My power always drops in those corners
May have to just drop a gear to keep the pressure on. Harder than it looks though, comes with a bit of practice
ahh cmon you know we all wanna talk about trainer intensity ;)
What program do you use? For the power and other data?
I use TrainingPeaks, WKO, Strava🙂
Your cadence is incredibly steady for the whole climb, that's very impressive! Did you do everything seated??
You can watch the full video on my channel a few weeks ago, was seated the whole way pretty much.
50% difficult, that's why.
I’m 14 and my record is 50:04 is this rlly good?
Charlie Thew excellent time Charlie - and you’ll keep making inroads ✊
At 14 that’s great. I’m 14 and can only do 56:48 😂☹️
Ed, is it your aim to go for a world tour team or are you happy at continental? You seem to be the perfect climber to be snapped up

Try doing your 34 min effort for 47 mins. It's all relative Ed 😂😂
