They did, about 20 years ago :) This report is quite old at this point, I believe they have cut her into sections to make her more easily observed by the public.
That is very good news that it's being de-constructed in manner where the integrity can be restored in the future. I had visions of those museum exhibits of rare items that have been sectioned for display--essentially destroyed. Any relic saved from the scrapper is a good thing.
No thanks needed! I was born in Scarborough and remained there until I was 12 when we picked up and moved 200 kms north. I'm currently in Peterborough. Scarborough is now only an 1.5 hrs drive!
@paulhunter123 Yea.. for 48 years it's surprisingly in good condition. Tho their could be a reason why it's intact, even the slightest damage to a u boat in the right area, could make it go down slowly but the submerge tanks are too damaged(based theory on the crew escaped).. yea, it's not worth sticking in, especially if you sink too low and.. water pressure, imagine crushing a beer can and being in it.
That's what I had envisioned too! But from what I hear, they are going to be doing a very percision job cutting her into sections. It's still bad, but atleast they will be able to put her back together once they get a bigger building ready. If they do, that is. And this way she will be MUCH easier to restore.
Sorry baseld80, I don't know the dicovery channel title. I have never seen their work but would be intreasted to watch it. The video's here on youtube were recorded on the 6pm news long before the documentary. Regards Martin
You have to love the way the British say "Tomato Ketsup" with such a regal flair. Oh and to Speeddemon3, if it weren't for the "fucking Americans" during World War II, the world might be a very different place today. As we say in America today, don't freakin go there!
No that´s a myth. The Mauser brothers said, that Springfield copied the action. Springfield said OK, if you think so sue us. But there was no international court, that was able to sue Springfield to pay royalties to the Mauser brothers. So the Americans used the action without paying anything.
Springfield's patent infringement was a U.S. court case and therefore does not require international court attention. Mauser Werke was paid and was satisfied with the license and penalty payment made to them. Since it was a matter between Springfield and Mauser Werke and Mauser was satisfied, your opinion is not reliant. Recent studies of both the German law firm representing Mauser and the US firm representing Springfield show the payments. In other words: Sie sind falsch.
Mario Quijano :- if all the crew got out before she sank, then its NOT a war grave... and they Emphasised that in the News broadcast adding that some crew died afterward. Nobody aboard= not a war grave.
Well, either those people save her, or she is cut up for scrap. Although it is a shame that she is going to be cut up, atleast she will be cut in such a fashion she can be put back together in the future. They are cutting along the original lines in which she was constructed. She was VERY CLOSE to being COMPLETELY destroyed for scrap, mind you.
How many World War 1 and World War 2 Subs are within Reach to be Raised ? We owe it to them and their Crews to retrieve them and out them in Museums for People of all time to understand what their crews went through as Sailors dedicated to their countries did for what the ythought was right. Each Sub is a Piece of History ans a Monument to what Humanity did to itself right or wrong. They each are History of the 20th Century
Springfield Armory paid Mauser for the rights to their action. In fact, they paid for the license during the time that the Springfield 1903 was being used to kill German during WW1.
im disgusted they cut it up. im english and theres no way ill go pay and see how theyve fucked it up just so one disabled person a year can have a look. an old crew member was reunited with his leather jacket i seem to remember, he almost went back in for it when it was sinking.
It takes two sides to tango, save your vitriol for Russia who held a good portion of Europe hostage for decades. That wasn't the United States, go back to sleep.
All I'm sayying is they need to be critical of safety while researching technology, not technology and then safety. Communist and other installed govt's have pushed to hard wanting to be first to do this or that against other technological country's. Then mistakes are made that snowball into terrible disasters that have put thousands at risk and they pay for it. That's not arrogance my friend, that's just diligent thinking.
THe big condoms were used as ballons to fool the radar? I heard the living crew members swore that is was the small condoms that were used as balloons to fool the radar.HEE HEE
Well I will assume you are Russian or Ukrainian, I didn't view your profile, I apologize if I'm wrong. But as for the "arrogance" I'm again assuming you think I'm American, which is wrong. Canadians don't think like our negative southern neighbors. Yes..Russia and it's former Soviet Union have indeed made marvelous advances in technology, no one doubts this! But it is nerve wracking to think that past Russian & S.U. gov'ts have pushed their technology past safety points and failed.
Considering the fact that its now been cut into pieces in an act of short sighted vandalism, maybe it would have been best to leave it to rest in peace at the bottom of the sea.
Remember that it was never certain what was going to happen to any of the German's machinery after surrender. This might really piss you off - The Japanese Imperial Navy had half a dozen "super-subs" that actually carried 3 aircraft in a little hanger in front of the conning tower. I think it's been dubbed "The lost fleet". The fuckin Americans scuttled all of them before the Red Army could inspect them. Don't know why they were worried, the Russians can't build anything right.
All this nonsense about Nazi gold...don't people realize there are only 2 intact IX type u-boats left in the world? They should care more about u534 as a rare artifact from a dark time in human history than a gold reservoir.
the people that own it are going to chop it in 3!!! its one of two origial u-boats! see my channel for more information and how you can petition online to save it!!! hurry!!! time is running out!!!
You're telling me to go to sleep? Yours is the country with a "dream"; an entire nation asleep. Who gave Russia that good portion of Europe (it was obtained through diplomacy after all)? Who denied the Russians the technology for atomic weaponry (only to have it stolen)? We all know America is a machtpolitik nation, I have enough "vitriol" for any situation but I hold a special place in my hearts for America (because it deserves it).
Springfield Armory paid Mauser for the rights to their action. In fact, they paid for the license during the time that the Springfield 1903 was being used to kill German during WW1.
My father was on the plane that sunk this Uboat.
They should at least try to preserve her. As good of shape she's in she would make a great museum piece.
They did, about 20 years ago :) This report is quite old at this point, I believe they have cut her into sections to make her more easily observed by the public.
MrThathurt1 1993 based on the "48 years ago"
Erm, now it's cut into several sections, U 534 needs to be welded back together.
That is very good news that it's being de-constructed in manner where the integrity can be restored in the future. I had visions of those museum exhibits of rare items that have been sectioned for display--essentially destroyed. Any relic saved from the scrapper is a good thing.
i remember watching this documentary on Discovery Channel and was searching for any info about it thanks for posting it
I agree with you . I believe the loot often encourages investment in these salvage operations.
No thanks needed!
I was born in Scarborough and remained there until I was 12 when we picked up and moved 200 kms north. I'm currently in Peterborough. Scarborough is now only an 1.5 hrs drive!
Ever been to Scarborough fair? xD
It's still full of air?! Wow.
The boat is the treasure ....
It's at U Boat Story in Birkenhead!
@paulhunter123 Yea.. for 48 years it's surprisingly in good condition. Hummm,, I got an idea, let cut this relic into 4 sections, sound good ?
That's what I had envisioned too! But from what I hear, they are going to be doing a very percision job cutting her into sections. It's still bad, but atleast they will be able to put her back together once they get a bigger building ready. If they do, that is. And this way she will be MUCH easier to restore.

That's Birkenhead, Liverpool, UK. They cut U534 into three sections for display, not what I would have done.
awsome-picking up a sub from the sea bottom awsome. cudos to the salvage crew-windhamman -USA

IXC/40's weren't known for their dive times , but were a long endurance weapon .
The only thing that frightened Churchill was the prospect of running out of Gin or Scotch.
Great day out loved going as a kid!
if the guys are there that were on the sub ask them what was in it
Well what did they end up finding in there? Anything of value?
You have to love the way the British say "Tomato Ketsup" with such a regal flair. Oh and to Speeddemon3, if it weren't for the "fucking Americans" during World War II, the world might be a very different place today. As we say in America today, don't freakin go there!
have you got the documentary title?
Isn't This U-boat Restorated, or are they busy with her in England?
Liverpool, UK. Cut into three sections for display.
Very cool video, I love history vids and I like this props man.
It's sad that U-534 is being cut up into sections to make a museum, too.
Did they find any gold?

HIMI20

if it sank how comes its so intact? and what about bodies ?
paul hunter I dont think there would be bodies. It would be more like soup! But they said in the begining nobody went down with the sub.
Where is the sub now? Can the public see it?
did the germans get back their U-Boat?
I want more!!!!!!
that was really cool
when was this broadcasted?
That is a big submarine :-)
+Corey Baird you have not seen mine he he
calm down, it's not going up your ass
The boat is in a museum in Chicago
corey spikes no it's in the UK, u-505 is in Chicago.

Cooler than a penguin's unit...
I'll drink the whiskey.
Isn't this a war grave?
I apologize...it clearly says that it is not a war grave.
Mario Quijano I love how you have a satanist as a profile pic and excuse yourself for something rather harmless ^^
Mario Quijano :- if all the crew got out before she sank, then its NOT a war grave... and they Emphasised that in the News broadcast adding that some crew died afterward.
Nobody aboard= not a war grave.
oh thanx

so what happen to the sub
Она утонула(ц)Путин
U-boat commander: " To hell with this hans get the spirts hermann get the condoms we our going to Argantina "
why is the u-boat 534 so famous ?
Could they not have just asked the survivors what was in it and where it was going?
Did you not pay attention to the video?
amazing

I'll try the whiskey, but no sense in kidding myself on the large condoms!
No ... in Chicago is U 505,but it is the same Typ.This one is in Birkenhead,Poland.
Springfield Armory paid Mauser for the rights to their action. In fact, they paid for the license during the time that the Springfield 1903 was being used to kill German during WW1.
Really cool
@bongokaktus Even if it was quite a sinister period for the Kriegsmarine !
yes all worth it ,full of treasuer as it was set afloat full of it , or maby it was on a mission to stop enemy war ships from invading germany
What about war grave ok my mistake
nothing wrong with the sub!!! dry it and sail again
OK than pay us for the Springfield M1903 instead :D
im disgusted they cut it up. im english and theres no way ill go pay and see how theyve fucked it up just so one disabled person a year can have a look. an old crew member was reunited with his leather jacket i seem to remember, he almost went back in for it when it was sinking.
You didn't watch the video. You should find a clue before trying to form an opinion. There were no dead on that U Boat.
@Speeddemon3 Simple. The russians entered the Pacific war after the Hiroshima bomb was dropped, and unless they were a combatant, no war prizes.
It takes two sides to tango, save your vitriol for Russia who held a good portion of Europe hostage for decades. That wasn't the United States, go back to sleep.

Good thing Geraldo wasn't there or they wouldn't have found shit.
..the small condoms were meant for allied POW's :))))))

@@MrSvenovitch Dude relax that comment is 10 years old
Yeah, cheers for the Cold War - appreciate the effort.
