Tom you have mentioned Unify wireless and cameras are hard to find. Well yesterday I was at the local Micro Center Store buying cans of dustoff of course I looked around and what did I find a treasure trove of Unify products. So check them out if in a bind. Like the Edge products youhave sold me on using their line, keep doing the reviews. By the way we are discovering Xen ng still a VMware guy. There is an interesting analysts of MS acquisition of git on Tech Republic alone with some alternatives I' ll send a link in a private email.
Nice, just what I was looking for not long ago :). Only 1 minor wish.. I wish the two switches were put next to eachother, as a kind of physical comparison, inside and out, even if very similar.
I had 4 EdgeSwitch48 Lite and every single one of them was DOA. I love Ubiquiti's wireless stuff but after this experience (which delayed deployment for months and cost man hours) I do not trust their switch lineups. There is something fundamentally wrong with your product if you manage to have so many faulty units and according to their forums I'm not only one.
John Besedic Only the PoE lineup making noise, like the UniFi ones, since the are active cooled. The Lite lineup is passiv cooled and doesn't make any noise.
Correct the POE Edgeswitch is something you would not want to sit beside your desk. I have over 100 of them running and none of them have failed in over 3 years of use.
hello Tom, can you please tell me, which Unifi / Edge / Cisco switch is best for wired network. i am using unifi Poe Switch for wifi network.. . and what is the difference between Unifi and EdgeSwitch Thanks ..
I’ve never actually seen a use for the EdgeSwitch line. No enterprise or medium to large company admin is going to use the EdgeSwitch (or Ubiquiti for that matter). Cisco, Aruba/HPE and Brocade (Ruckus ICX) already dominate the market. Might as well just be a UniFi Switch.
Preston Mainard i can't speak for everyone and for sure Cisco and it's brothers are nice. But I have a few clients in the 350+ employee range and I use unifi and edgeswitch. One client inner purely edge switch. 5 48 port linked into core SFP switch linked to 3 wan router. Tons of VoIP phones and AP's and desktops. Zero issues. Stanley. Simple setup. UNMS gives me so decent details remotely.
I have to say, unless we are talking isolated remote sites, I don't find use cases for UniFi. Why? Companies are money hungry and, if they are clever, they use the cheapest, but reliable, gear. There are comparable switches out there, that are somewhat cheaper. Edge series is more easily integrateable, because it has fairly similar GUI logic to other manufacturers. UniFi being too different harms it in switching. There is a rule out there, that say's "Always use what you need, where you need it.". So when designing a network, one has to ask, "Do I need ES8-150, something larger, or will non-PoE switch suffice?". As long as less than half of the switch is populated by PoE, there is no need for it and thus no need to buy EdgeSwitch and say Netgear will suffice (well, if only one switch can be installed). But, if the switch get's populated with PoE over half the ports, one has to ask himself, "Do I actually need capabilities that make EdgeSwitches unique, specifically passive PoE?". If yes, it usually is better to go with EdgeSwitch, if not, Other manufacturer will likely be cheaper. There is little benefit of having all gear from one manufacturer.
Great videos, and have been enjoying many of them. Unfortunately, not quite enterprise. I do enjoy and sell Ubiquiti, but compared to a similarly priced Cisco or HPE switch, those will come with lifetime warranty and exhaustive documentation. Great video though!
Could you give a couple of models that are basically the same for Cisco and HPE feature wise to the EdgeSwitch? I would happily go Cisco or HPE if the prices are somewhat close but their model naming conventions confuse me on the Enterprise side. The Cisco Small Business naming isn't bad though.
Bradley Stannard: I can't find any Cisco switch in the Catalyst line anywhere close in price to the EdgeSwitch reviewed here. The gap grows much wider when you start looking for POE+ and SFP+.
Nico Piotraschke Is UNMS out of beta? When I raised an issue with Ubiquiti a few months ago their excuse for why they will not fix the issue is because the whole UNMS product is in beta (I.e. I should not complain about beta products). They essentially said that UNMS should not be relied upon in a production environment.
UNMS went 0.13 yesterday. So good. Updated my routers and switches and UNMS. All went amazing. I'm not a WISP but a MSP and I use UNMS heavily. Essentially for firmware updates and config backups.
I am a Linux Systems Administrator and currently work for an MSP. I've been a Ubiquiti enthusiast for several years. Then when we started using them professionally I began to find out how poorly the hardware is constructed and about the nearly non-existent support Ubiquiti provides.
dude if you're not going to explain everything then don't waste my time, you talked more about the things that you wont be talking about in this video.
definitely should be revising for my exam tomorrow but UNIFI
I love the new UI just for the quick traffic summary. The original UI is more powerful but once it is set up the new UI is much more useful to me.
i work for an MSP. i love unifi for MSP. but in my own home. i use edgeswitch and router for everything. i use unifi for AP's
UniFi for MSP is for the reporting to a controller. Edge suck for reporting to 1 server. Maybe they need a cloud controller for edge.
@@lightning5273 they have its UNMS
Thanks to your video, I have bought a unit to upgrade my network.
Glad I could help
Something I didn't hear mentioned is the EdgeSwitch line is advertised to support layer3 routing while unifi is only layer2

MirkWoot the guts of these are generally identical, which is why no one does that.
Can you do a review of the USG XG or it's EdgeRouter alternative? I'm just really curious what it can do
A Cisco vs Ubiquiti CLI comparison would be cool. Specially the Trunk and VLAN stuff is totally different on Ubiquity than Cisco.
BoltThrower321 YES PLEASE! I love the Ubiquiti CLI because it’s really intuitive but I’m trying to learn the Cisco one as well
That white keep it there glue is built-in obsolescence. over time it attracts moisture, becomes a dark brown / black conductive problem.
Edgemax devices are layer 3 while unifi are layer 2 only. Also edgemax devices have individual web- interface.
Just returned my 24 port lite... Thermal sensor not reading errors... may go to the unifi just of ease of use.
They need to merge the product lines and have a unifi basic mode and a unifi advanced mode that gives you edge max level usage
Hi! Thanks for making great informative videos. I like your humble and intellectual approach! Any thoughts on the UNMS server? Do you use it?
On my to-do list, but never tried it
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I've been testing it for while. Definitely worth a try. Again, thanks for making great videos!
Might aswell go for Cisco if you goin' for 48 Port Switch
does edgeswitch and pfsense play well together for the routing?
Yes
Yep
I noticed edge switches are cheaper than the switches from the Unifi line.
Now if they could only get production issues solved and make them cheaper.....
It's only $415 (MSRP) for the 48 port model. That's cheap.

Edgeswitch is a lot louder than the Unifi switch. Just a heads up.

Muhammad Adeel Ahmed Khan I think of you are pursuing CCNA or any related certs I’d totally go with a Cisco switch. The video explains the rest

You earned a sub from me for your pro-scripting stance!

exactly ... Cisco have really good waranty ... they never argue with any issues .. they ship another one straight out.. same for the HP devices !

No part of Ubiquiti is enterprise. You’d be silly to think that way! They are great for the SMB market.

Azure is powered by PowerShell...
UNMS?
It's supported on the Edgeswitch. Just update to latest firmware and easy setup.

Still in beta, don’t know your issue, but works fine for me with the few devices I have
jcnash02 It’s great that you only have a few devices and are not trying to use these products in a mission critical production environment.

Being a Linux enthusiast doesn't make you love some random sort of CLI of a random proprietary system.
Oh, they are a different color. Got it. Thank you. That sums it up.
console in the back is a pain tbh ...
Shame a lot of the rack gear doesnt have LP AIO water cooling instead of LOUD noisy cheap fans
My guessing it's mainly because durability of AIO's can be a problem.
Wow not much too it , thanks for the tear down
