timeless song with a message that seems to be needed more nowadays than back then
I was in high school when this came out and it made me feel like we finally came together as a world. 30 years later....what happened?
I live near the town they are from, hannover. I was born after fall of berlin wall in 1995 but i still get chills. I love you reaction, keep it up!

I always wonder if reactions from people who don't know this song really understand what it meant. The feeling was indiscribable hope. Cold war was ending, Germany was uniting. This was a very happy moment. It was a glorious celebration. I can't hear it years later without a smile. It was one of the good memories of my lived history.

You are so cute and smart you get the meaning behind the music so well I grew up with the Scorpions and it only now that I am old enough to appreciate the message they were giving to us America is at a crossroads and we may find out what it means to live under the government thumb if we are not careful. This is a classic for people my generation
I just learned this song about 3 weeks ago, (the rhythm guitar part). My fiance lives in Ukraine. I had heard this song a 100 times but never really listened to the words or thought about it. I mostly listen to the sounds. Anyway, so when I was learning the words to sing it, it occurred to me, this HAS to be about the fall of the Berlin Wall. Sure enough, I looked it up and that is what its is about. I thought about that speech that President Reagan made at the Brandenburg gate.. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." And I got very emotional. It meant something to me. I didn't even realize how the song had become an anthem throughout Eastern Europe for freedom, especially economic freedom, freedom from the chains of socialism. I guess that is why my fiance Elena likes it so much. I always liked it but now is one of my favorite songs.
The song is about hope. The wall came down and east and west became one again x
This is about the fall of the Berlin wall as the Germans were able to unite again as the Soviet Union collapsed. Was an amazing time to be alive and remember that time like it was yesterday.
actually it is about the end of the cold war and was written months before the wall fell...
it just became the un-official anthem for the fall of the berlin wall...
heine wrote it in moscow after being part of the moscow music peace festival. it was the time of gorbatschow, glasnost and perestroika. the song simply captures the zeitgeist of this era perfectly, when people looked positiv towards the future thinking we finally can keep all the division behind us.. sadly fast forwarding to today and the 21st century we seem to move further and further away from these ideals each day
Yes, me too and I will never forget it. People were like touched by an angels wing. People were so cheerful and treated each other so kind. So I know, people can do much better and its good to know. :)
