Amazing as it is, I usually don't bring any ear wear when I go Railfanning. Usually the typical plugging of the ears with your fingers works fine, as the case with this video.
I remember when metrolink put BNSF after the cabcar and it would be in the road when stoped there and when it honked the horn scared the crap out of me.
