- I had a chance to talk to Vivian Le, from Viets for Biden to ask about the interesting encounter between Vietnamese Biden's supporters versus Trump's supporters in mid-October.

yeah... i'm in some Viet groups on FB in my area and it's quite disturbing to see all the name calling and what not. I see people leaving the "haha" emoji, leaving hurtful comments, but dont' provide any substantial data to back their view. i hope to see more dialogue so people can understand each other's views.

Is "republic" identical with the US Republican party? A young friend of mine asked me why so many older Vietnamese are die hard Republicans. I'm not sure I have an easy answer. I've often heard from Vietnamese, especially those of my generation, that Republicans are anti-communist while Democrats are pro-communist. I have absolutely no idea where they got this from, but it's obviously doesn't make sense because America is fundamentally run by capitalists. Most American politicians, Republican or Democrat, are from wealthy to super-wealthy. (Those who are not yet wealthy they are funded by capitalists. That means, their career depends on the latter). They are the advocates and beneficiaries of unregulated capitalism and free market fundamentalism. I don't see how they'll support socialism (so that they have to share) or communism (and risk losing their privileges).
Let's return to the question why so many older Vietnamese passionately support the Republican party. (They seem to be ignorant of that fact that the Republican party as it is now is a threat to minorities and immigrants). My guess is they're obsessed with the word "republic", and the former South Vietnam was called Republic of Vietnam (Việt Nam Cộng Hòa). If that's the case I think it's a serious confusion between the word republic and the Republican party. Republic derives from the Latin respublica (res: entity, publicus: of the people or public). Republic, thus, is a political regime in which sovereignty rests on the people through elected representatives which also has an elected president rather than a monarch as in a monarchy. The American revolutionaries defeated the British and separated themselves from their monarchy and founded a republic. They called themselves "the people" ("We the people" to begin the constitution). Republic is therefore a style of state that renders democracy possible. America is a republic with a two party system. The US is a representative democracy. It's a democratic form of government. It's a democratic republic.
South Vietnam called itself a republic because Vietnamese monarchy ended when Emperor Bảo Đại abdicated. It doesn't at all mean that South Vietnam adopted the same political policies as the US Republican party. Actually, the only two presidents of South Vietnam didn't call themselves Republican. Ngô Đình Diệm founded "the Personalist Labor Revolution Party" and Nguyễn Văn Thiệu "The National Social Democratic Front". Vietnam currently calls itself Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Cộng Hòa Xã Hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam)'
I hope I'm not wrong but I certainly do know people who got this mixed up.

Vivian Le, her age, can physically see up to 30 miles down the road with her eyes. Politically, she has never been a" boat people" or any kind of refugee who came to America. Thus, she is in your shoes as you were in VN before. Her knowledge about Vietnamese politic in America is from ( most of) ) Democrat teachers and online searching info from leftist bigtech (cancel culture, etc.) We, the older, have seen the history of VN in the past 60 years with our own eyes. We support Trump and Republicans to stop China from growing and getting closer to VN. Democrat will let China expanding, invading Taiwan, VN, maybe Korea, or dominate Asian countries.

I am an old dude, came to US as boat people, has been here more than 30 years . The followings are what I saw in the last 4 years
1- In 2016 before Trump, the global ecomists predicted that China will catch up US in 2045. In 12/2020, they predicted that
China will overtake the US to become the world's largest economy by 2028
2- Trump lost the Trade war aganist China misecrably, so summer 2019 he had to "ask" Xi Ping "please" to buy more US farm goods (so that the farmer could vote for him), and in 12/2019 China promised to buy 100 million US farm goods
3- Trump focused the millary in the Golf to protect Israel and to prepare a war with Iran. So he let China freely to expand in the South China Sea.
4- In the last 4 years China grew so fast in technology that they are ahead US in 5G, Fintech, AI, and especially electric cars. In 2020 China had 1.3 million new cars, while US had only 363,000 new electric cars.
5- One thing that Trump did well was he played tough against China verbally, especially claiming China for the Covid-19 and called "Chyna Virus". The consequences are (a) during the Obama term, 70% Chinese supported their government, to the end of 2020 90% supported their government (b) the Violence against Asian

I didn't like "cuồng" Trâm supporters. I didn't like what they said. However, I respect and defend their freedom of speech because it is our first amendment in the U.S. Constitution. It was sad to see that they attacked Biden supporters and tried to take away Ms. Vivian Le's first amendment right. Great video Linh.

If your interested in a Vietnamese wife here. Don't try to show if you have money. If you have an older car use that. If she likes you and you got an old car she is probably a good woman. If she judges you bt your car or material things run away. I met my wife in school. I was out of the Army and had a 10 year old truck. She stayed with me. Some of my wife girl friends live for today $4000.00 purses, that kinda stuff. Thats insane.

Many of them and even make fun of some other peoples that look simple, that they can't afford luxury things, especially those "Ho favorite youths" from the northern part. What she means is that democrats policies are what helping the immigrants/refugees and the poor and the less fortunate. And most of the GOP policies are against all of that!

Linh, I think it is very "nice" to see people are trying to be involved with American politics, but we should all learn to accept each other point of views and respect each other. Everyone should be focusing on policies that affect our community ...not conspiracy theories.

I do agree that people should stay away from conspiracy theories because they will eventually destroy democracy! And no, I do not agree that we should learn to accept each other point of views. Not when those point of vies are based on conspiracy theories and lies. Yes, you need to form opinions and so on but they have to come from truths and not from conspiracy theories or lies! Then we are not on the same level playing field so to speak! People should really look up Masha Gessen of The New Yorker. She has studied and covered Putin for a long time. And she shows you how Trump and Putin are very much alike since they both exhibit all of these tendencies of a dictator! So I find it ironic that these Vietnamese are supporting Trump a dictator wannabe!

First, stop using "love" to say about the fight against communism which is basically the whole country in this case, because there's no love in it, it's purely hatred. Stop using "us" and "unite" because you're in a very small minority. Please don't skew the truth.
Second, the US has recently stated that it respects Vietnam's political system. Here's the quote, "we have strengthened and expanded our Comprehensive Partnership, based on a shared vision of a stable and peaceful Indo-Pacific region, as well as respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political systems." And a bonus tip for you, the US nowadays doesn't welcome people who oppose the communist party of VN. Please remember that.
Third, in case you don't follow the non-fake news, the Democratic party in the US, and all other highly developed capitalist countries are in a left-leaning progress towards socialism/communism and nothing is going to stop it because putting all people equally and science above everything else will result in such a system.
Fourth, "prisoner of conscience" is such a "convenient" term for someone who organizes plans to overthrow the government. In other countries they're simply called terrorist.
And finally I lost all respect for the channel owner for liking such comments.

I just wanted to talk about their anti-communism view and their "prisoner of conscience" term because they sounded like they still want a VN war part 2 and it's such double standard because "prisoners of conscience" are also domestic terrorists in other words. "Fighting for their release" is also meaningless. VN offered them release in exchange for exile but they didn't agree. So where will they go after release if they're also persona non grata to both the US and VN? I'm one of those who support both the Democratic party and VN's Communist party. Just peace please.

I support Mr Trump to win for geopolitical reasons even though I don't share some of the President's values.
Mr Trump is also one of the few global figures who is powerful enough to keep China in check.
