    hello! i work at an aquarium and am pleased to share that fish can in fact make sounds!
    there's three different ways the do this: using sonic muscles near the swim bladder (drumming sounds), striking skeletal components together like teeth or dorsal spines (grinding/clicking sounds), or by swimming quickly in a specific way (swimming sound heard in schooling fish for example)

  • @orcasareneat
    @orcasareneat 17 days ago +136

    Arin would be pleased to know that fish do make noise. They move air through their swim bladders and it sounds like farts.
    Also, freaking love Dan's new whale thing.

    • @kierancampire
      @kierancampire 17 days ago +3

      Also, i am pretty sure I remember seeing a thing one time that a mic was put under the ocean and could hear fish communicating, yet when boats went over it drowned out the fish so the sound was lost? Dunno if I dreamt that or if it was even true, but I think I saw that once?

      @kierancampire I dunno about that particular incident, but it's well established in uh, fish science that fish do make noises. They don't have vocal chords or anything but they've got muscles that vibrate their swim bladders. Some can stridulate, kinda like crickets
      Look up plainfin midshipman for a particularly loud example of fish noise

    So... first thing: "whale bone" is actually baleen. Old-timey corsets are made out of the mouth bits, not the giant bones. Also, the MAIN purpose of whales is apparently to eat a crapload of stuff and then just drop absolutely MASSIVE dumps to keep the marine ecosystem cycling.

    • @IsaVarg
      @IsaVarg 16 days ago +8

      Massive dumps that promote phytoplankton growth, trapping huge amounts of carbon dioxide! Whale poop is vital for not just the marine ecosystem, but for all life because of just how much photosynthesis the poop phytoplankton do.

    • @GreatWightSpark
      @GreatWightSpark 16 days ago +4

      @chelseahill1293whale fall is such a cool term for basically the freakiest convention the planet can offer. There are SO many things we don't know about (recently they found huge arthropods that prey on small sharks) and they all come out to feast on whale fall 😅

    • @chelseahill1293
      @chelseahill1293 16 days ago +1

      @GreatWightSparkhell yeah! the ocean is such a freak!

    • @Heyhicarolina
      @Heyhicarolina 12 days ago

      @ccggenius YES the baleen are made of keratin, like hair, and are not the actual bones of the whale. They are more like teeth, filtering water to catch plancton. We do not use them anymore to make corsets, now we can either use steel bones or synthetic whale bones A.K.A. plastic. 😊

    9:40 my guess to why Dan said what he said about the watch was because watches in general have been obsolete since we carry a watch in our pocket every day. Watches have been more of a fashion accessory and less about having something to keep time with for a long time. That's my theory as to why Dan blurted that out lol 😂

    • @wereotters

    22:16 the baleen was used for the boning in corsets, not bones. I think the nomenclature there just crossed some wires is all. Idk if corsetry is making a larger comeback, because I got into it for nerdy historical costuming purposes, but anyway. We can use plastic or steel now. I used portions of those giant 24" zip ties for boning when I made my late 1700s style stays, and used a kit from Redthreaded that included a bunch of steel bones for my 1880s corset.

    4:34 "Blur out my friends."
    Also blur out all the sign-on notifications of all the friends we constantly saw over the the last 10 years worth of Grumps videos as these friends started up Nintendo Switch and Steam games that went unblurred.

    Arin's side of the watch conversation is such a neurodivergent experience. Just like "I'm not mad I genuinely just want to understand what, if any, social faux pas I committed just now; what do you mean?!" And then your confusion confuses the other person so much it becomes a whole thing.

    • @wereotters
      @wereotters 17 days ago +15

      @Spacecore0 my guess....
      at this point in time, wearing a watch is usually more about fashion than it is about actually using it as a time telling device, and honestly it's been like that for probably at least 10-15 years. As such more often when you see someone wear a watch it's going to be an analogue watch because that's more aesthetically pleasing to look at and offers more options for ornamentation than does a digital one
      Conversely when you do see a digital watch it's more often a smart watch like an Apple watch or a fitbit, something that's primarily there to do something other than tell you the time
      A digital watch that's just a watch is an oddity

    • @Mazurecki56
      @Mazurecki56 17 days ago +3

      @wereottersOn the other hand, digital watches are a big thing among collectors of retro items. Arin is definitely a retro collector, so in my eyes him wearing a digital watch would be more normal than wearing analog

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi 17 days ago

      pretty sure that's normal.

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi 17 days ago

      @wereotters I'll never understand people who think analog watches are more pleasing to look at. You can't even read them with ease. Unless you're one of those freaks that can like, read music, so you see gaps accurately instead of just seeing gaps....
      I have my phone on my wrist but I wear a 25 year old cool digital watch on my other'n. along with another phone holder, sans phone, on account of the phone holding part broke but it's still a cool wristband.

    3:00 those are called phonic lips, or as my professor (who's worked with marine mammals for over 50 years) called them, Monkey lips! Even though... they're.. in a... whale.
    Scientists are weird.
    They make the clicks and trills by tightening the lips and pushing air up and down past the lips and focusing it through their melon, with the fats of the melon acting as a sonic lens to focus and narrow the sound.
    It's cool stuff.
    Also the sperm whale's melon is called the junk. Because whalers couldn't get whale oil out of it. so it was junk to them. and the name stuck.
    Whalers are weird too.
