I really appreciate this tutorial series. It is so nice that you are going slow and step-by-step. I have downloaded your course content for the whale. You have a drilled in the shortcuts and the reasons for doing what you're doing and I am hopeful that I can follow your instructions. Thank you so much for doing a beginner tutorial. So many of the others rush through them and you're trying to see what they're doing but you can't Quite catch everything. Cheryl

Think of expanding as finishing a step. After you complete the live paint select everything and expand. This will complete the live paint mode and it will allow you to more on to the next steps. You usually have to to select the whale- right click - ungroup- deselect. Usually you have to do this 3 times before you can select the individual shapes again. The main goal is we can select the individual shapes so we can add our shadows and gradients in the next steps.
Jason Secrest That's great. I'm now seeing others tutorials of your channel and it is all awesome. For a non native speakers you audio its great. Thanks.
thank you for all of your tutorials. they are so helpful. please keep them coming. Oh yeah, cloud you please make one with textures. I would really appreciate it.
I really love your work, your tutorials are amazing! I'm trying to learn how to use illustrator and these are very helpful! I just have one difficulty - when I try to select the live paint tool, my brushes change and my whole illustration gets kinda destroyed. Do you maybe know what I am doing wrong?
You are trying to color on live brushes. There will be an error message about a complex appearance when clicking on a live brush layer which will wipe out your variation. Use Expanded/Editing Brushes or a layer that just has the original path. (duplicate brushes layer + select all + remove stroke)
At 5:56 in this tutorial, the whole illustration is surrounded by the tan marquee box, just before you go to live paint. How do you get that entire selection to be in a marquee box? You say "control zero". If I do Command 0 (I'm on a Mac) nothing happens. If I do "Command All" everything gets selected, with all the end-points, but no marquee box. Using live paint seems to hinge on this one thing, and I'd very much like to use live paint to fill a large area with color. I'd really appreciate your response! I've really learned a lot from your tutorials!
Control/Command Zero is fit in Artboard in Window. The Select All was done by selecting the Circle on the Layer or just Select All with the other layers locked out. ( Look for the Circle or Button on the Right of the Layer - Click to Target. This will Select All on the Layer 5:51
Notice that my final ink layer is above and locked out. I am coloring on a separate layer below the ink lines. Solution: create new layer below lines or cut/paste lines to a new layer leaving behind color from live paint (ungroup before cut/paste)
Jason Secrest thank you Jason. As absolute novice I’m just trying figure out in my head when to use which pen. If the curvature pen in a newer pen doesn’t that help better with creating curved lines?
of course.. all i received is the email where i need to click on confirm request and thats it.. theres no other links there where i can download resources like its shown in the tutorial from your website..

I'm so excited with this tutorial. It's detail and it's perfect for beginners. I'm just a little confused with the "expand" parts and "ungroup".

I have kinda a hodge podge of knowledge about graphic design so this is really helping. Where do I go though to learn the gradient and shading?
Good Morning Kaylee, the full-length modules are on Teachable. You can click on the Active Leaning tab to get to the Whale Tutorial.

Hi, I love these tutorials. I have a question, why do you ungroup 3 times?
good luck ;)
Amazing
Having an issue where when i use the blob brush and color it goes over the lines and effects them unlike yours where it seems to go behind. Any help?

Can I ask why you don’t use the curvature pen tool?
Are you asking for this live paint tutorial or the initial pen tool tutorial?
Jason Secrest thank you Jason. As absolute novice I’m just trying figure out in my head when to use which pen. If the curvature pen in a newer pen doesn’t that help better with creating curved lines?
