Higher caliber means wider rounds and less room in the ammo rack, longer barrels means less room to rotate in a built up area between tower blocks or between trees. Merkava has a point.
Sorry o meant to add a longer reply :) I think the Merkava is one of the finest tank ever made. It’s compact and also from what the chieftain says has a revolver type semi auto loader. Its ammo is well stowed and the whole thing is built for urban survivability. With its spike missiles now it’s pretty dominant. I don’t like the length of the leopard 🐆 turret or barrel. The Abrams also to me is a good tank :)
Tell that to the Guns of Navarone but look what happened to them or those Rail Truck mounted also in WW11 Style, Mind you it would be one heck of a logistics job moving them around.....
