@@thepanda1044 Ooooh I grew up on Shirley Temple too! Used to watch her movies over and over. Wanna find them again for myself now that I'm an adult hahaha.
One of my fave movies ever!!! I remembered this tune from when I was a child growing up in italy. I had no idea what the lyrics were about. Years later I ended up living on the Old Kent Road myself.
This video and tune should be mandatory viewing and listening in every elementary, middle and high school in the U.S. and their equivalent in the English speaking world as well as the rest of the non-English speaking world!

I remember Arthur Treacher as a grumpy old coot on the Merv Griffin Show back in the 1960s. It's great to see him in his prime in this very cute number.
Wow I never knew that they made the movie like that, the two parts of the song went so well together, amazing. Thank for the edit, loved it, going to show my grandmother.
The song is only partly sung in this movie. Here is the complete song, with the parts used the move in brackets, numbered in order of use. Note the parts used are not sung strictly in order. “Wot Cher!” Lyrics [Last week down our alley came a toff Nice old geezer with a nasty cough. Sees my missus, takes his topper off In a very gentlemanly way!] (1) "Ma'am" says he, "I 'ave some news to tell, Your rich uncle Tom of Camberwell, Popp'd off recent, which it ain't a sell, Leaving you 'is little donkey shay." [Refrain: "Wot cher!" all the neighbours cried, "Who yer gonna meet, Bill Have yer bought the street, Bill?" Laugh! I thought I should 'ave died Knock'd 'em in the Old Kent Road!] (2, and repeated twice at the end.) Some says nasty things about the moke, One cove thinks 'is leg is really broke. That's his envy cos we're carriage folk, Like the toffs as rides in Rotten Row! Straight! it woke the alley up a bit, Thought our lodger would 'ave 'ad a fit, When my missus who's a real wit Says "I 'ates a Bus because it's low!" Refrain [When we starts the blessed donkey stops He won't move, so out I quickly 'ops Pals start whackin' 'm, when down 'e drops Someone says 'e wasn't made to go.] (4) Lor, it might have been a four-in-'and, My old Dutch knows 'ow to do the grand First she bows, and then she waves 'er 'and, Callin' out "We're goin' for a blow!" Refrain [Ev'ry evenin' at the stroke of five Me and the missus takes a little drive. You'd say, "Wonderful they're still alive" If you saw that little donkey go.] (3) I soon showed 'im that 'ed 'ave to do Just whatever 'e was wanted to, Still I sha'nt forget that rowdy crew, 'Ollerin' "Woa! steady! Neddy woa!" Refrain End. Note that in the song, the new owners have trouble getting the donkey to start, but get over that, and it is trotting pretty fast at the end. In the movie version, they are, apparently used to having it go fast, then it suddenly starts having trouble. The song in the movie is not presented as a regular musical number; you see a bit of it at the school ( Minchin and Crewe have evidently been practicing), and later they do a bit more to entertain the troops. This makes it more natural, avoiding the artificial feel of most musical numbers - how often in real life does everyone just drop what they are doing and start singing and dancing?
When the Pope in the 1930's saw Shirley Temple in several motion pictures he asked if she was a midget!!! He couldn't believe someone that young could have such talent!

This is underrated.
But then again, so is talent like this in the modern day.
This film was a huge success starring an extremely popular child actress. How was it underrated?
