Cool, very cool - but why not drag some tape through the gap in the washer?

You don't need washer to do that
Just a spiral is enough
I was putting it inside a cassette with 2 wires and making my stereo playing music. There was no aux or Bluetooth back then.
The quality depends on spiral you make and adjustment

Yes but hard to get a stable gap. I couldn’t get a signal strong enough with that

Is the wire enameled wire or bare wire

Enameled wire. You need the insulation to provide the faraday effect
