    Thank you for your comment about being fussy about books. I've recently found myself feeling the exact same way! The older I get, the more I don't want to waste a minute reading something I don't really want to read.

      Yes, life is too short, isn’t it?! Sometimes I get too impatient and don’t give an author enough time to lay out what she’s trying to do. Sometimes, if I’m thinking about bailing, I read the end to see if I feel the journey to get there will be worthwhile. What’s unusual for me is that descriptions of new literary novels (my favourite genre) are mostly not catching my interest.

    Hi Lindy, lovely video as always. I love the way you talk about books; I always find great gems from your videos. I also enjoy the way you share your delightful adventures, the beauty of nature, food, the Canadian scenery, and your unique variety of interests.
    I loved There There and have Wandering Stars on my TBR. Enjoyed Weasels in the Attic. Currently reading North Woods by Daniel Mason, but my reading time has diminished significantly due to busyness of work and other reasons, but I always look forward to your videos. Long post since I haven’t commented in a while, but just wanted you to know I appreciate you being here on YT.

      Hello Joanne! Thanks for your kind message. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed Weasels in the Attic. Natalie over at Curious Reader is going to buddy read it with me. I’m excited about that.
      Yesterday I picked up my library hold for North Woods, so you and I will be reading it at the same time. 😊
      Happy reading!

      Angelia, I’m sure you will enjoy Wandering Stars. The literary salon came about because my sweetie and another poet were planning to arrange yet another poetry reading series and the idea occurred to them that instead of looking for a public venue, they could make it private and have it in our homes instead. The evenings are always a mix of new works by the poets in the group and published works by other writers.

    The Endlings poem broke my heart. I feel like I should search out the book to support the poet…but not sure I could bring myself to actually read it.
    I read Ducks after you mentioned Kate Beaton in your last video. Oh my, it was so powerful.
    Apples on the Windowsill & Wandering Stars sound wonderful.
    I’m new to literary reading (after spending decades reading escapist romance/urban fantasy, which is what I needed at the time due to life stress), and I’m now thoroughly enjoying sampling different authors/types of writing to figure out my new reading tastes. So I’ve been slowly tackling the various prize lists-so many lists!-and loads of Booktube recommendations. Currently very much enjoying Dearborn by Ghassan Zeineddine (short stories centered in the Lebanese community of Dearborn, Michigan), and listening to The Wren, The Wren (my first Anne Enright novel).
    Glad you had a lovely trip, and thank you for another delightful video.

      Thank you for this message. Yes, the Endlings collection has sad content, but I really like Joanna Lilley’s style: a playful mix of gravitas and humour.
      I am delighted that you enjoyed Ducks! Do let me know what you think if/when you read other books you hear about on my channel. The prize lists offer lots of possibilities. Anne Enright’s work is an excellent place to start. If you like The Wren, the Wren, she has wonderful earlier novels too.

    Lucky you to hear Kate Beaton talk about her work - she’s always a happy combination of interesting and amusing. There should be a world for missing a very specific food from a past home: more than a decade later, I still hanker for rye bread and bagels from a now closed bakery in Ottawa. And I’m encouraged by your positive reaction to Wandering Stars - it’s nearing the top of my hold list.

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Heather! Beaton talked about what it was like growing up in a place promoted to tourists as a step back in time, where tourists took photos of people just doing their work, (manual labour) and how her creative work was made possible by having access to books written by other Cape Bretoners. She had much more to say… lots of food for thought.
      Did you enjoy There, There? If so, I am sure you will also enjoy Wandering Stars. Happy reading!

    Hi Lindy, I love the reading of endings. Beautiful poetry!
    I’ve wanted to read there there for a long time. So thank you for the reminder. I always appreciate the links that you give.

      Hello Maya! I’m glad you heard the woodpecker and enjoyed the poetry. Hot cross buns are made from a sweet yeast dough with cinnamon or other spices. They contain dried and/or candied fruit also.

    Sounds like you and I had a similar reaction to End of Drum Time. I felt the cold. I need to get to Aednan. However, I'm a little worried it might be too experimental??? Wandering Stars is en route to my branch of the library. I loved There, There and you've stoked my excitement for this one. The Sand Creek Massacre was in Colorado. I showed a clip from my visit to the site in my December 2 vid. The National Park Service have done a good job partnering with the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes to present the history of the location and get the site recognized as a National Historic Site. Lots of archeology was required in partnership with the tribes to define the park boundaries and identify locations from the massacre.

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks Sarah, for the information about the Sand Creek Massacre. I remember now that you had talked about it on your channel. There were so many-too many-massacres of Indigenous peoples. And Wandering Stars is about the aftermath, the way that specific trauma affects subsequent generations.
      Ædnan is experimental but I don’t think you will find it inaccessible. I found it gripping from the start.
      I’m not having the same success with other experimental works. I tried Alphabetical Diaries in audio and gave up when I got to chapter C. I’m 1/3 into Code Noir (print edition) and considering abandoning it too.
