  • On our small farm, we're constantly looking for ways to make a little money while we wait for our Christmas trees to grow. This year we planted 1/4 acre of sunflowers and opened as a u-pick operation. Its been a good experiment.

    Great Video. I have a large farm, where I plant about 5 acres of vegetables, and offer pick your own, and draws a lot of people, especially around Sept - Oct when the pumpkins are ready. You have inspired me to grow sunflowers, all sizes, including the American hybrid, which get over 12 ft tall. I have grown some, and always grab peoples attention.

      That is awesome! This video was from a couple years ago and we're doubling down this year with a longer flower season and more flower varieties grown over a larger acreage. Thanks for watching.

    I love how simple you kept it, although a lot of work, not so many types of flowers. This was my first year of cut flower garden, big! I learned what I like...Zinnias are gorgeous and so many kinds that you really get a nice variety, especially paired with Sun Flowers. Thanks so much for sharing this!

    Man following along your series is great. You are so right about the social media aspect. I would view the sunflower picking/photo shoots as a marketing opportunity rather than a huge money maker. Ones the Christmas trees are available you can give everyone a Christmas tree magnet or something so that they remember you. Great mindset you have

    • @WoodsTreeFarm
      @WoodsTreeFarm  4 года назад +3

      Hi! Thanks for the question. Yes we tried pumpkins last year (there are videos of that here on the channel) and it was a miserable failure. I think it would be difficult for us to succeed with that not being full-time farmers. On top of that, we're going to do more fall Christmas tree planting based on success we had last year, so we need to spend time in late-Sept-Oct prepping and planting.

    Very interesting! Thanks for talking about the ins and outs. We're looking at the opposite of this, with flowers as our main gig, and christmas trees just to keep our acres in agricultural production. Also, the trees open up a revenue stream during a period when flower farms are usually at their slowest.

      Our corn for the last 2 years developed smut...didn't even know what that was until it showed its ugly face. How about luffa squash? I looked into growing it for sale but my homework says our region wouldn't be warm enough long enough. You could even add other gourds for bird houses.

    I put 10000 sunflowers in over 5 plantings with terrible results. First we thought bad seed. Then we thought it was to hot. ( we get 35c every day in summer. We thought maybe something to do with our soil. Then we thought mice. Finally we realised we had a group of small birds and ducks coming in and eating the first leaves off our Sunflowers from sprouting stage to 2 inches high. So can’t plant big paddocks. We now plant only 400 at a time and have a bird net over the top.

    I think that is a good sales number so far- and as you said, your season isn't over yet. We have been thinking about doing this for a few years, and think we will try it next year. Do you know roughly how many seeds you planted?

    • @WoodsTreeFarm
      @WoodsTreeFarm  4 года назад

      We purchased a 1lb package of mammoth sunflowers, estimated 4700 seeds, and planted about half of that. We also planted 1000 seeds of a Vibrant sunflower mix. Since we used the corn planter, seeds were dropped in about every 8 inches, which is pretty tight for sunflowers, so that in combination in inadequate fertilization they grew relatively small. Mammoths can grow over 10 ft. Most of ours are around 5-6'.

  • @JAllyFarms

    hey Phil. I was wondering the price you put on per sun flower or pound or however you decided to sell them at. Might do this next year to help buy some more seedlings. Were doing a pumpkin patch this year last year was a bust but they seem to be coming along really well this year. Our first year is always a learning year and then its what can we do differently what should have we done before and lets try something new this year. You might want to try pumpkins again take what you learned last year and apply that to the next time. Although water is key we are finding out.

      I've done a couple videos on the topic since this one came out. There's a flowers playlist on my channel if you want to catch up on some of the others. We charge admission (doesn't include any flowers), and also charge for a container, starting with a 20 oz paper cup for $12. Visitors can cut as much as fits in the container they've paid for. So far its working well for me. I understand some farms don't like that approach, especially if they're growing a larger variety of flowers, including some more exotic or costly flowers. We just do zinnias, cosmos and sunflowers.

      Hi there! I suggest you get a soil test done. Look up your county extension office. They probably have a test code for ornamentals or flowers and they'll tell you exactly what you need to add based on your soil properties. The cost could be free (or very minimal). Then you can just buy what you need. We knew our soil was deficient, but didn't follow the recommendations because we had marginal success the previous year. Our blooms weren't what we had hoped, so we added liquid 10-10-10 at the last minute and that kind of turned things around, but the whole crop still wasn't as good as it should have been. Good luck!
