Your videos are awesome! Just changed mine and was just as easy as you showed us! Took me only 5 mins. Grateful for your share! Saved me quite some money!
Incredibly helpful video! I can't thank you enough. I finished the job alone in under 5 minutes. Pro-tip to those doing it alone like I was - I'm not sure about all struts, but for the one in the description box, one strut is strong enough to keep the hood open. When you open the hood, use your head to hold it up while doing one side.
Thank you for the wonderful video, Carolina Cowboys! It was very helpful in teaching how to fix my own car...even made my own video of the process too! Thanks again! 😄
Thank you so much for posting this hood struts fix. I am a 65 yo female, and with the help of my husband and a broom to hold up the hood while making the fix, I was able to remove old ones (after prying clamps off on each end first making it easier to remove the old ones) and replacing with new $20 struts that I bought on Amazon via your link for the struts. Lexus wanted a little over $400 for this 10 minute replacement (which would have probably taken Lexus 3 minutes), and my cost was all of $20. I love youtube and the people that post videos like this! Thanks!!!!!
Just finished with both the hood and the cargo lift gate. You might say I've been a bit tardy in getting to these projects. :-} HOOD: I removed a side shroud in order to get to the base of the strut. My recommendation is to flush messing with the "C" clip and removing the shroud. Just carefully use a large screwdriver, twist, and pop the base loose. Easy to do. Also easy to install new ones.....just line up the ends and give them a rap. They'll seat easily. Trying to get the "C" clip back into place can be a hassle if it gets completely removed....learned the hard way. Everything now works like a champ!
@@CarolinaCowboys Just did it, it was a snap thanks to you! The only thing I did different was remove the retaining clips on the side attached to the hood and it pulled right off
Instead of using a long screwdriver to pry off the struts, use a small screwdriver to pop off the "C" clip around the top and bottom connectors. It makes the removable process even easier. Then for the installation of the new ones, just pop the new ones on the top and bottom ball joints on the car (being careful to notice before you remove the old ones, which end of the struct goes on the hood and which goes on the car body!! Believe me - you'll be glad you noticed this before the install - as you get pissed when you have to pry them off and start again!!!!!)
Cool. Just picked up a used ‘10 RX350 which had them blown.... seems to be pretty common with those Not sure it was mentioned before, but to remove the upper ball joint, the easy way is to just remove the spring clip from the old one; no prying needed to remove it. 5 min job and $20-$25 from Amazon and back in biz!!! P.S., the stock stereo is pretty damn good!!!
Carolina Cowboys The American car manufactures should be ashamed of themselves with how superior some of the Toyota/Lexus products are compared to theirs.... I’m sure it will pi** a lotta people off by saying that, but IMO, it’s reality...
Dealer wants $420 to do this. Less 30 dollars for the parts, they are charging the 5 minutes of labor at $390 X 12 = $4680/hour! Great work if you can find it.
SG local mechanics are using the estimated repair times from the same shop manuals the dealerships use. The difference is the labor cost can be as much as double the local mechanics cost.
I have an RX 2011 and the stupid hood struts failed like 2 years ago. Lexus quality my a$$. What a rip off! I was about to call and complain but i guess i was not alone. :-) Anyway, i found out a Chinese made pair is like $15. Might last as long as well because i open the hood like 2 times a year lol. Thanks for the video and instructions.
Tip: an awl can be worked down under the edge of the C clamp far enough to loosen it. Having done that, I twisted the strut by hand to loosen it from the ball. My luck gravitates toward bending or breaking fittings if I just tried prying with a lever. Thanks for the video.
LOL, ya I'm sure there was a proper way to remove those. I'm working on posting a video replacing the rear hatch struts and I think I used the same method as before

Dude, you just saved me over $300 over what the dealership wanted to charge us for that job! I owe you bigly!

@@CarolinaCowboys Thanks for so many awesome videos, Carolina Cowboys!
After watching your video, I was able to replace mine easily and quickly. Many thanks.

Wow. That's way easier than I thought it would be. Really nice walk through. Thanks for doing this!
Glad I could help!

Just got a quote at the dealership to replace these 2 struts for $450 - I will do it myself!!!
Wtf
ridiculous
They were probably quoting the wheel struts not the hood struts!
Spot on! Replace hood and lift gate in 15 minutes. All good.
Awesome!
Thank you so much for the video. Saved me a bunch of time.
Great to hear!
Thank you very much. I was able to do it thanks to your video. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the video! I guess quarantine is a good excuse to finally get around to doing this haha
Definitely, it was super easy, just try not to scratch the paint!

Jay Fox I tried taking off the C clips first and it was much more difficult than just popping the whole thing off
I don't think you can get to the clip on the bottom. I have to do exactly this repair on my wife's RX350, I will see how it goes.
This was super helpful! So easy!
Awesome
Easier than I thought. Thank you for sharing.

@@tomonconce1012 yes I’ve done several! ruclips.net/video/GvhDHBTa67c/видео.html
Use a smaller flathead and pry the metal clip on the back of the joints first, then it pulls right off.
Thanks for the tip!
Perfect! Thank you.

Using a pair of "Vice Grips" on the opposite strut, will keep the hood open safer and easier than a stick.
That's a great idea!
Thank you

Would a local respected mechanic charge as much as the dealership?

Please check the struts directions.
I didn't see any
Great way to scratch the paint.
Only if you're not careful, but it's pretty difficult to remove without prying it
Wow! Easier than I thought. But shame on Lexus for such shoddy parts.
I think 10 years is a pretty good lifespan for these
