I honestly believe that Emily switched to talking about the gift because she KNOWS that Lorelai will become fixated on it and it will take her mind off the wedding. Emily isn't the kind to immediately start consoling her daughter, or to even acknowledge the situation properly: but she knows Lorelai is hurt and needs a distraction.
Emily didn't know anything about Lorelai being hurt. She got mad at Lorelai cause she thought they eloped. Lorelai tried to her about the wedding is off.
I never looked at it that way, but I bet you're right. Emily isn't a perfect mother, but this was the perfect way to help subvert the awkwardness and distract Lorelai.
I love how there´s a glance of pride in her eyes when she hears Lorelai was the onewho called off the wedding. Like she´s happy Max didn´t think Lorelai was not the one. Or maybe pride in the sense of "We gilmores don´t get rejected, we are the ones who reject"

That whole scene was epic. The dialogues were hilarious. Lorelai sees the painting. Emily: without a register we were flying blind. Lorelai: well.. you flew great mom.

it's kinda sad that Emily doesn't even get to be part of lorelai's wedding to neither Chris nor luke. so she did miss out on her only child's wedding
Kashish4Eijaz she cared about the Chris wedding but she accepted her daughters decision of marrying Luke without her presence.
The wedding for Luke and Lorelai was the next day so Emily will be apart of the wedding. Plus Chris didn't want anyone at the wedding.
