    Hey musers!! This month's Streets of Seoul episode is on the topic of plastic surgery. What do Koreans really think about it? Come with me to find out.
    Here are just some of the questions I asked:
    What do Koreans really think of plastic surgery?
    How common is it? Is it still taboo at all?
    Do many students do it? How is the school environment in regards to students returning with different features?
    How do they feel about how South Korea is portrayed as ‘The Plastic Surgery Capital’ by the international media? Do they feel it is fair or unfair?
    From a Korean perspective, both local and foreigners now living in Korea, why has PS become such a big thing, and has it always been this way?
    If someone offered to give them a complete celebrity makeover with plastic surgery for free, would they do it?
    How do they feel about their partners/bfs/gfs having had plastic surgery?
    What do they think of true beauty?
    Some serious, some not-so-serious, but still trying to get to the core of it, I got some answers I didn't expect.
    We tried organising interviews with some surgeons and filming inside clinics, but none were open to talking about side effects, etc. So in order to bring you guys the most neutral and unbiased information, I decided to go with this format for this episode of Streets of Seoul!
    What do you think about Plastic Surgery? Would you say yes to the offer of a free plastic surgery makeover, and why or why not?

    I'm only 15 and I think people can naturally change. if your still a teen like me and you want to do Plastic Surgery, I would reconsider because
    we're still growing and there is a possibility of getting prettier going through puberty if you take care of urself well.
    also, make-up can help too.
    plus I don't want to look like everyone else. no one's going to remember you if u look just like ur favourite celebrity, they're just gonna be like 'oh that girl/boy looks like (...)' they probably won't even remember ur name.
    originally thought I looked really bad but as I grew up, I started to realise that I look fine and I look like who I am.

      +Brigetta Tang Yes definitely reconsider plastic surgery if you're a teen! You will still grow, trust me! It amazes me that teens can even get plastic surgery in S.K. In US they don't even recommend it until later 20's when you've fully grown/developed. If you get plastic surgery as a teen still growing, there's a chance when you're an adult that your nose will look totally different from when you first got it done and it might even go botched!

      +Brigetta Tang So true! When I was younger, I always thought that I was so ugly and all because I had soo much baby fat in my cheeks I always thought I was not so pretty ._. But now, like in my half year of 2nd grade in High School, I started to notice that my face started to get prettier and I had realised that the baby fat was now gone XD
      I kinda miss it tho. I was cute and shit back then, now I've got a more slimmer V-shaped face and look so much prettier compared to be4 ._.
      And yeah I agree, I don't want to look like some1 else. I want to be me, and known/remembered as me

      13ALWAYSBELIEVE nope. Looks always will and it’s just human nature there is nothing wrong with valuing looks. Personality will start to matter after you attract people FIRST with your beautiful face. Nobody will want to know your personality unless you lure them in with a pretty face.

    "Outside matters." "Plastic surgery is bad."
    Many people do not accept surgically enhanced women, but then they also don't accept unattractive women.
    ...so if you're not born attractive you should just accept it and suffer?

    • @Maya-fe8xm

      My point exactly. It's not disgusting to get plastic surgery if you feel insecure about your looks.

      I think a large percentage of the people who are against cosmetic surgery are fairly beautiful or handsome themselves, they have no obvious flaws like a crooked jaw.
      They're against it because people buying beauty threatens their position as a beautiful or handsome person.
      Their asset, which they got by being lucky because of genetics, is becoming less rare when people can just obtain that asset simply by putting money into it.
      The guy in the blue sweater is complaining about something that doesn't really happen often.
      Usually people that get something done that bothered them for a long time become happy and radiant, not overconfident like they think they are better than other people.
      If you were sweet and caring before, you're not likely going to turn into an asshole or bitch just because you got that bump on your nose removed.
      The human mind/personality does not change that quickly and so radically.
      If you turn into a bitch or asshole after cosmetic surgery made you look better it wasn't the cosmetic surgery that did it, it's because you were secretly (or not so secretly.. but at least less publicly) an asshole or bitch to begin with. You just didn't broadcast it so widely because you thought you couldn't get away with it.
      He also complains about girls who pretend to be something they aren't. Like he's afraid to be mislead.
      I think that's pretty dumb, in that aspect cosmetic surgery is no different than getting straight teeth by braces or altering your appearance by hair dye, contact lenses to correct vision, straighteners for hair, teeth whitening, make-up etc.
      IMO this fear of being misled into liking someones looks through cosmetic surgery is ridiculous, there is no real difference between a naturally beautiful person and someone who became beautiful through plastic surgery.
      It's permanent, you can't take it off at the end of the day like make-up.
      That's usually when the "but the kids will look ugly, so it's misleading that she pretends like she has good genes" argument comes into play.
      Which gives me 3 counter arguments;
      1 that's not how genetics work. Children aren't an exact mix of the parents natural outer appearance.
      For example I do not look like my mother or my father, instead I look like my maternal grandmother.
      It is pretty common for children to not look like either of their parents. 2 ugly parents can have beautiful children, and 2 beautiful parents can have ugly children.
      2; if she had the money for cosmetic surgery in the first place, why don't the children get it too if their children appearance is such a big deal to them.
      3; not all couples result in children. Some can't have them, some don't want them.

      Chem Is Cry - But why do you think you should give a shit about a person who doesn't "accept" you because you're unattractive? I mean isn't that kind of a person unworthy of your attention and interest? Let's imagine that you'd change yourself to fit into the standards of that specific judging, limiting, condescending person - would that make your life happier without fail? Or would that person pressure you to change more aspects about yourself? Or could you end up in a situation where you don't even know what YOU want from life since you have been so keenly listening to all these people oversharing their opinions about your looks? Could you be 100% certain that now that you're all pretty and get compliments, that that won't be the single factor as to why people care about you? And that they'd turn their backs to you if your face burned in fire or a virus attacked it and destroyed or you grew old and wrinkly. Like I do give a shit if people tell me I'm ugly, and it does make me feel sad. But I also know that their opinions are not worth a shit and that I am a whole healthy person who is allowed to leave all these toxic people behind.

    I actually used to think about getting plastic surgery when I got older (Im 16 now) bcz I didn't like the way I looked but the thing that changed that for me was probably learning more about my ancestors (im indigenious american) and seeing so many of their features in me today and that gave me a sense of pride of who I was and how I looked. I'm not against people getting plastic surgery but I hope that they realise where those beauty standards come from and that other peoples opinions of them really don't matter. So I'm more so against the plastic surgery "culture" or "industry" or whatever than the idea of plastic surgery.

      Some people get plastid surgery just to overcome their inferiority complex so i think the constant paranoia would be applied to those addicted to it or done it many times

    • @bantananonymeboys4202
      @bantananonymeboys4202 8 лет назад

      +stephaniesoy That depends more on the person than the situation.
      Someone could have done one surgery and feel that way.
      A person that has done his/her body from head to toe could not feel this way as well.
      Not denying that someone who has done it several times would be more prone to feel that way.
      Only stressing that it depends more on the person than the situation.

    #SOS biracial relationships. I've always been curious about what Koreans think about biracial marriage since it's south korea is kinda homogeneous. I live in the US and it's pretty common especially in the west coast.

    • @amyrich2008
      @amyrich2008 8 лет назад +22

      +Sophie C compared to even just about 5~10 years ago, the number of biracial couples and children have TREMENDOUSLY increased in Korea. It is still a homogenous country and you wouldn't really find biracial couples in your local towns, but in bigger cities like Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, etc. there are many foreigners living there with biracial families. That being said, the newer generation is more accepting than the older generations. Some people mistake thinking that Koreans might be more accepting of white-biracial couples than black-biracial couples just because of racism and skin color, but in reality Korean's are more closed minded to ANY kind of biracial, in fact, even multicultural families. Even if they marry same race (Korean marries a Chinese), because it's not fully 100% Korean, they may not be fully accepted. That's the just the way how society is, but it IS slowly changing with the emergence of 21st century and a huge influx of foreigners coming to Korea.

    • @sophiacoronel
      @sophiacoronel 8 лет назад +19

      ^ .... that doesn't even answer the question. I wanted to know if marrying a person of another race is frowned upon in Korea. What does double eyelids even have to do with the beliefs of a country lmao. Besides, a Korean marrying a Southeast Asian doesn't make the child biracial because they're both of the same race = Asian. It makes the baby mixed ethnicity. Run along.

    • @ishamaini1
      @ishamaini1 8 лет назад +6

      +Sophie C Would love to see one about this topic, also is it true that mixed children in Korea are ostracized from the community for not being 100% korean?

    • @HanQ28
      @HanQ28 8 лет назад +1

      +Sophie C just wondering, do you really find race to be that different from ethnicity? or that the race of Asian makes sense?? The categorisation of a huge number of ethnic groups into one racial category and naming it 'Asian' were done by those (ignorant) European colonisers anyway. Asians, ranging from East Asian to Central Asian, don't even share the same skin colour, not to mention language, religion and other cultural elements. I do think that Korean, Han and Japanese people can be grouped into one race. At least they look similar enough. But all those Indigenous North, South-East, South and Central Asians, do you find them to have more similarity to Korean/Han/Japanese than to white people or black people? The only similarity i can find is that all full Asians have dark brown or black hair. But then again, black people also have black hair.

    • @HanQ28
      @HanQ28 8 лет назад +1

      +Sophie C So i guess what i want to say is that you won't understand why Koreans resist biracial and bi-ethnic marriages to the same degree, unless you realise that the concept of race really doesn't mean much to Koreans (and most other 'Asian' ethnic groups). I understand the Koreans because I'm a Han Chinese and being in the same race with native Malaysians and Indians means nothing to me. They are just like Europeans, Americans, Mexicans and Africans. E.g. if i found my cousin marrying a Korean, Filipino, British or African American, it would surprise me in the same way to the same degree.

    i have no problem with plastic surgery whatsoever but I think it's so weird that everyone's reasoning is like "if you look prettier then its better." no one acknowledges the fact that pretty is not objective??? its subjective!!! but in korea everyone thinks there is only ONE pretty

      There are more ways to be ugly than pretty. There is an evolutionary reason for this.

  • @TheColorPot
    @TheColorPot 8 лет назад +65

    I think.. personally as a korean who understands korean culture/society to some extent, plastic surgery itself isn't the problem. It's the mentality behind those who take it. It's not simply to fix the serious flaws they have but often to just look a bit prettier. They have the mentality which makes them think that it's such a big flaw when often it isn't. That's why for many who do double eyelid surgery or other procedures, others think they look completely fine without it. Even the people who were being interviewed clearly showed signs of being opinionated and judgemental of outer appearances, as they talked about their friends being ugly and how they became more or less attractive. They themselves are contributing to the reason why (especially) females strive to achieve confidence through meeting society's expectations of beauty, because of the harsh judgement and how significantly they think of looks to be in comparison to the other contributing traits of a person. Simply put, most Korean people are materialistic and just way too obsessive about their appearance.

    • @bantananonymeboys4202
      @bantananonymeboys4202 8 лет назад +8

      Good analysis.
      I would add that they mostly strive towards the same beauty ideals, in some cases those are impossible to obtain
      (while looking natural).
      This is all a threat to individuality and proves that most Koreans care a little bit too much about the opinion of others.

    As a 40 year old American mom of 2 young teen girls, this is definitely an issue I think about- body image and teaching my girls that they are beautiful just as God created them. One of my daughters is physically handicapped, so this is a BIG battle for us! I think much of a person's sense of beauty comes from their parents and family, and also from what they see in the media. We try to limit certain media exposure for this reason. I try not to discuss weight and my own insecurities in front of my girls. I, and both my girls, are naturally pretty by western standards, so I realize that saying that I don't agree with plastic surgery will seem harsh to some and people may think "What does she know? She's never been ugly." So, I do think people need to give grace to others, especially in situations with birth defects or skin flaws, etc. As a society though, we definitely need to teach the next generation that ALL skin color, ALL eye shapes, ALL body types and face shapes, etc are beautiful!!!

      +Lydia Wells I think you're a great mom for protecting them from your own insecurities. Somewhere along the lines we are all told we should look or behave a certain way and it's so easy to stop questioning it and handing these thoughts down to our younger siblings or children. Your message of body acceptance will help them recognise the beauty in themselves and others despite the influence of media and peers..

    See the problem here in my opinion is that koreans are pretty judgemental in terms of outer appreance, so because of the criticism and such, Koreans get plastic surgery to try to enhance their outer appeals, which in turn then causes people to be very confident and then criticize others who are "less attractive" and they decide to get plastic surgery. So its an endless cycle and in the future, all the Koreans will look identical (which is already a reality in some areas).... But I guess South Korea doesnt view it as a problem so watevs

      +Minseok Kang PS isn't apply for Koreans only sweety pie, Americans tend to get plastic surgery too like jaw line , nose etc even they go on a surgery for their lips , boobs and butt you just don't even notice it. also not only Koreans care about their outer appearance, what about Americans or any other people from different countries besides korea , they tend to get a fake tan , make up with the same type of make up styles (where people almost looks the same) , make up and ps is considered as the same thing because it changes your outer appearance. we live in a world where we are surrounded by different sorts of stuff to improve our appearance so don't say like Koreans is the only one. ik Korea has the highest percentage of people doing PS but u can't just say that Korean people criticise other people that doesn't go under plastic surgery. be realistic and don't compare others when everyone in this world is trying to improve their outer appearance

    • @followtheflow2

      배배 I do see your point. But you cannot argue the fact that Koreans compared to Americans do get more plastic surgery. And it is more of a norm in Korea whereas in America, it is still viewed as something entirely different. Maybe because you guys are more open about it than when Americans get it. Its just a different culture and something we Americans are not used to. Its an interesting topic because the craze came out of nowhere.

      +배주현 I have Korean friends and they all know at least 2 people that have gotten plastic surgery, I live in America and in my 21 years I have never met a person who has gotten plastic surgery. I think it's because the beauty standards are different. If anything people here in America are more obsessed with having a big butt and I think it's because plastic surgery here is quite expensive and still a taboo.

    btw, as i get into kpop i never think plastic surgery as bad as i used to.
    kpop idols, i think they need those surgery because of the korean society itself, so i don't really mind.
    but for regular people, in my opinion,
    it's okay to overcome your flaws, but plastic surgery should be the last option to overcome it, consider it cost money, it's painful, and permanent. and because overcoming flaws are something personal, plastic surgery is a choice and should not be judged but should not be encouraged either.

    I find it very interesting that they all seem to be for plastic surgeries. I am totally against it because even if the person gets prettier, it is all fake. unless it's done as a result of a bad accident (broke nose for example) people shouldn't hate how they look. after all, everyone should be unique. majority of Koreans that got plastic surgeries are all looking alike.

    • @xCannibalism
      @xCannibalism 8 лет назад +57

      +oEllliieeeo But it's not fake? This becomes the person, their face. PS is just body modification , like tattoos And fuck that whole "unique snowflake" thing, let be people do what makes them happy. What's wrong with improving your confidence? Even if it is on the outside? Don't you wanna be pretty/handsome do? Don't you dress up yourself? Some people don't feel right in their skin, and never will. Do you hate transgenders too? Do you think they are fake for getting physical surgeries too?

    • @-Seppuku-
      @-Seppuku- 8 лет назад +21

      +xCannibalism the thing is that most Koreans are just following the trend. They also described it as a "trend" in the interview. I don't think this is what PS is supposed to be at all. Well for me I don't really care about it much, because it's not my business what other people do. As long as you don't try to look like someone else ( well this is really creepy ) I think it's Ok e. G. If this person has a really big nose or something like this. But finally I think I'm not really for PS because this is why the Korean society will turn out to be very ignorant some day. They are all just interested in outside beauty.

    Thank you for this video Jen. I think issue with PS is really subjective. As a non-Korean I never liked the idea of PS, because it just manifests a rippling effect of self-hate attitude that the younger and future generation will inherit. Everyone should also not take with mass media in its face value when it comes to their portrayal of an 'ideal' beauty standard - especially in the entertainment industry. Losing your unique and individual identity for the sake of conforming to a supposedly non-existent/ made-up societal standard is an incredible loss. IMO, no one should ever use the word 'ugly' to describe what was naturally given to us since birth. I believe what makes us beautiful is who we are as a person (as in inner beauty). After all, what is the point of having a beautiful face when you are a rude/ inconsiderate/ lagging in principle kind of person?

    Hmm You know what? The plastic surgery rate per population of Italy and Korea (You can see the article in NB.)are same but I've never seen this kind of interview that are done in Italy or brazil what so ever...like you can ask them(Europeans/ Americans) What do you think of boob job? What do you think of nose job, butt job, lip job.etc cus these procedures are common in those countries but why ppl keep asking same interview million times to random Korean ppl?? I've seen so many vids on RUclips that asking Korea about plastic surgery. It's getting annoying.
    Besides even CNN reported about half of Korean plastic surgery rates are because of foreigners who visit Korea for plastic surgery. The rates of Korean plastic surgery is exaggerated because of foreign patients.

    i dont think anyone should have plastic surgery unless they have to like they were in accident or something, if you can eat well sleep well and have healthy features instead of changing the whole thing or "fixing" it to the current beauty standard permanently i think it's better to put on makeup until you get at that stage in your life where you realise you are you you're unique and amazing then again to each their own.

    • @sixshot4
      @sixshot4 8 лет назад

      the thing is that majority of the surgery done in korea is as simple as double eyelid or a nose lift, nothing earth shattering like a complete face makeover.

      ***** a big chuck of the ps donein korea are foreigners/tourists from china and japan because ps in korea is much cheaper. That is what the statistics dont tell you.

    in my opinion, korean gets too much pressur from media. In many TV shows, they only compliment appearance about a person's beauty not about inside. In Korea media, lots of hosts of shows make uncomportable jokes just for fun about personal appearance. it should be changed becoz they can give teens huge negative influences. And there are some other issues related to national health care insurance. Korea has implemented not only high qualities but also too much cheap health care policies. this policy makes so many plastic surgeons. Plastic surgeries are not covered by national insurance so plastic surgeons can creat much high profits more than general surgeons. All these situations should be considered when talking about the issue of korea plastic surgery boom.

    ....hmmm, I was watching some video and a comment made me see how plastic surgery was a tool used to enhance their chances of getting a job. There are so many people in South Korea and there's a lot of competition of getting a job so if the person looks better- they have a higher chance of being hired. Most jobs require a picture too so I could see why they think plastic surgery is necessary. I mean if there were hundreds of people with the SAME qualifications and it came down to their appearance, I would chose the better looking person because they would represent the company. But I don't think plastic surgery is necessary if they just want to follow the trends.

    This was a great objective survey of opinions on plastic surgery. I personally do my best not to think too much about superficial gain, but there are complexes involving superficial realities. I can appreciate everyone's struggle, especially in terms of societal realities.

    I'm against PS. If you think about it, common reasons used to get PS are because they aren't satisfied with their look, because they wanna look like someone else, to get more job interview, to get a guy/girl, etc. It is actually so sad that they, as individuals, do not know how to be grateful for themselves, do not know how to accept how they look and survive with it. They don't like how they look, so they just change it? As easy as if you don't really like the clothes you're wearing, so you end up looking for other clothes in your closet. Life isn't about being told that you have pretty eyes, isn't about improving your look to get a job. isn't about adjusting your look to fit the "beauty standard". It's superficial. world is huge, but the only thing you're focusing on is your appearance?
    If you say "as long as it's not too much, PS is still acceptable.". How much is too much? If we keep accepting everything, in 20 years this "normal PS standard" will change. In 20 years even girl with addiction of PS will be accepted and called normal. It's sad that the celebrities, those who can actually give good impact to society, instead of spreading the positivity they are telling normal people to look pretty. Even if they are not, it's okay to change it. And they are also the one who make this beauty standard. "If you don't look like this, it means you are ugly.".
    and for your last question, Jen, whether or not PS is an improvement to humanity? it's a failure. harsh word, but I think it is.
    anyways, I really love this video. I can tell you put a lot of thoughts and effort into it. Keep it up, Jen!

      This is late lol but I get where you're coming from and I agree with you at certain points but for some people, they don't do it because they're oh so shallow and only care about appearance. They actually live in a high-pressured place that requires so much standards to guarantee their living like education and of course, beauty standard. Let's put our shoes from a prespective of someone who's not lucky enough to fit the standard, they'll constantly be reminded by their community and society, the media of how unfit they are to just survive.They'll be shamed on, called out, etc. In fact, there's a documentary on this. The pressure is not only hard but ridiculous as hell. What I want to say is, the beauty standard lead some people to self-esteem issues and took PS as the way out. And since it's rooted from self-esteem issues, I think it's more important for someone to tackle it before they done their PS at all, because PS alone may just dont do it. It may not solve problem, it's just covered it. Until someone truly learn to fully accept themselves, they'll continue to feel dissatisfied about themselves.
      + and the beauty standard isn't made by the celebrities themselves, they're just the puppet of media and corporation in order to gain more attraction which obviously lead to more $$$ to their pockets from people

      I got into a few fights when I was younger and like a big dog it bit me on my back and it makes me embarrassed because I have a big cut near my right eye from fighting and scarred back from the dog and my jaw was broken fighting so it looks strange and kind of not even.
      I’d like to have surgeries to look better because it makes you feel better inside too, it’s not at all superficial, because it makes you sad when people always stare at you and stuff so there isnt anything with wanting to look more normal.
      I think it is a bit sad when pretty people don’t feel pretty in themselves and get addicted like the korean celebrity that she Inject fat in her face and become deformed from the obsession.
      Maybe they could be careful and make sure people understand what they are doing first I think. It’s good that surgery can make everybody be the way they want.

    NO one thinks positive things about plastic surgery in Korea. Koreans are beautiful in their own way and it talks about media and "white influence" all over the world. US is a country that has people from all ethnic backgrounds and that is beautiful. being different, looking different, and thinking different is beautiful as we value INDIVIDUALITY.

  • @amyrich2008
    @amyrich2008 8 лет назад +3

    I don't think you guys understand what it feels like to be Korean living in Korea. Most western countries, especially in America, you have so many different kinds of people with different looks, shapes, and sizes. That's what makes you unique. Even in Europe, northern Italians do NOT look like souther Italians. However, in a smaill country like South Korea, the situation is different. Everyone has the same skin color, same eye color, same hair color. Almost everyone falls under similar height and similar weight. When you live in SUCH a homogenous environment and wants to be unique, you instantly choose any option there is to stand out, which PS could be one of. Think about this- there's two candidates with the same background, same race, similar education and credentials. In a homogenous country like Korea, what sets these two candidates apart? Their faces. Even if they may look similar, the company will likely choose the one who is even a LITTLE bit better looking. This kind of societal pressure along with the environment LURES Koreans to take PS and become more "beautiful" which in Korea also translates to being more "accepted" and "honored" by Korea. Beauty means a lot in our culture, but thankfully, it's NOT THE ONLY thing that matters, but outsiders mistake that we only care about faces. Nope.
