Maya 2020: Quick Rig + Attach Hands

  • The Quick Rig Tool that was introduced in Maya 2017 allows users to create a HumanIK rig for a human character with a single click. Unfortunately, the Quick Rig Tool doesn't create any bones for the fingers.
    This video shows how you can manually (and quickly) add a hand skeleton (or any other skeleton parts) to your character during the Quick Rig process.
    PROBLEM: after saving the character and loading it again the Control Rig seems to be broken, the handles will not move anymore.
    Here' how to fix it:
    When I copy the left hand over to the right side (after deleting the original right hand) the DEFINITION of the HIK character is broken.
    What you need to do now is:
    - in the HIK panel in the "Definition" tab turn off the "Lock" icon - this will delete the Control Rig - the regular skeleton is now visible
    - select the joint of the right hand
    - in the HIK panel hold the right mouse button over the GREY bone icon of the right hand and choose "Assign Seleced Bone" (the icon turns green or orange)
    - turn the "Lock" icon back on
    - in the HIK Panel pulldown menu "Source" choose "Control Rig" - a new Control Rig appears, should be working now
    I hope this works for you.

    THIS video is FANTASTIC!
    I was learning maya rigging coming from MAX and was getting by with trial and error , But I learned so much from this video and I am 100% converted to using MAYA for all my rigging characters from now on, The quick rig feature is such a time saver and really easy to configure to get the results you need.
    Big thanks for tips like using the cursor keys to move about the bone hierarchy, and the Bit about local bone axis and not using the mirror/symmetry setting when setting up the hands, these were Invaluable tips. Subscribed!

    Thanks! This is a fantastic tutorial but it seems like such a stupid oversight that Autodesk wouldn't include this sort of thing with the quick rig option. I remember using 3rd party scripts back in 2004 that did this with the click of a button with just a little bit of work to place the joints properly.

    So if anyone else is running into the same problem I am (you save the file at the point the tutorial ends and then re-open it and none of the controls will move your character), I believe this is happening because of an invalid skeleton definition because the new bones in the hands were not defined. I'm not exactly sure how to solve this problem since I am unfamiliar with mayas new quick rig system, but that is my best guess. If anyone else runs into this problem and managed to solve it, I would love to hear how you did it. Thanks.

I followed all the steps from the video itself, all I can say is thank you for creating this video. The only problem I have is after skinning all in all just like in your last part of the video, the fingers are working, but the feet, the torso and shoulders are not working. Is this I haven't painted skin weights accurately the rig itself?

    • @RolandReyer
      @RolandReyer  4 года назад

      The problem with the right hand has to do with the naming of the wrist joint that was mirrored and auto named. When I re-register this wrist joint in the HIK character definition, everything is ok again. You could even register the hand/finger joints and re-create the HIK rig.

      You can try to play with the "resolution" setting of the skinning (11:20), set it higher or lower. If that doesn't work you could try to transfer the skin weights from a lower resolution model - or you have to paint weights.

      For unity, just make sure you bake your animations on export. create a separate export with your character in it's rest pose with no keys and export that one to use as your avatar definition in unity. You will need to map the bones in the unity editor as well, but once it is set up any animations using the same rig should work in unity as long as they are baked on export and set to humanoid in the unity editor. It took some trial and error but I managed to get it working.

    Hey
    Roland Reyer I'm trying sculpt gladiator from Xmen in tpose and then pose him using maya as an obj. I did a test on the nickbasic man mesh and was able to rig the quick rig and place joint correctly but when I tried to move the meshe's arm the polygons started to separate. Idk mb i need to increase subdv before importing into maya and then bind skeleton rig

      Hi, when you say the polygons "separate" do you mean that there are holes in a surface that should be closed? Or do elements of the body (skin, cloth armor) move at different pace? Send me an image roland.reyer@autodesk.com

    I have used this technique many times and never had problems, but now while i am following along with the video, Maya doesn't let me connect the joints together, after i have created a skeleton with the quick rig and try to use create joint tool, it keeps placing joints in random areas in the scene--basically i cannot have them be connected with the quick rig skeleton. if anyone else has experienced this please lmk!! (i am using Maya Indie 2023)

    Hi, I get this error message when trying to orient joints: // Warning: line 0: Skipping QuickRigCharacter_LeftForeArm: It has non-zero rotations.
    If I try to set to zero in the channel box the x, y,and z rotation, it rotates my foreharm, and therfore, the hand joints move away from the hand mesh. Do you have a solution?. Thanks so much anyway, great tuto

      There is no need to re-orient the forearm.

    yeah but the right hand won't work since you deleted the joint, it may have also lost the rigging of controllers on that part as well.

    so the only question i have is, how do you redefine the definition so when you save out and reopen your file the rig will still work.
    i followed your tutorial but when I left my project to go work on another one and then returned back to this one. the IK doesn't work anymore.

    Hey, thanks for your really good video!
    I have a problem. when trying to bump up the resolution of the binding method, I get an "Error Guide settings changed. Please re-perform skeleton embedding" and I can't update anything. I need to recreate the whole rig. please help!
    I have completed attachind the hand, then mirrored it and parent it the same way as you show. but this error doesn't let me continue.
    thanks

      I’ve never seen this error. Which resolution did you use?

    • @IshaiMeresman
      @IshaiMeresman 4 года назад

      thanks for the quick answer! It's probably related to naming the mirrored joints of the hand. I also saw that the humanIK character view shows that the controllers are not good. the right hand definition was missing. I tried to manually add the joints after naming them properly. that also didn't work. the only thing I could do was to skin the character manually out of the quick rig window. this is not so good as I lose the controllers and the IK behaviour of joints

    Great video, But it's really strange that i can't do what he's doing at 1:29 with the rig, mine is way more stiff, only the arm follow. Any idea on why that's like that ? I tried to put the same config to the auto rig as he/you.

      In the HIK Panel you can choose between three modes for the movement. One of them is the “Full Body Mode”.

    Hi sir, When I import a character from cc3 into Maya it already has a built in skeleton and rig, when I delete it to replace it with Maya's quick rig, it changes its pose from T to A, which is a little difficult to manage specially for fingers, is there any way to stop this change in pose?

    • @RolandReyer
      @RolandReyer  3 года назад

      Instead just deleting the unwanted skeleton you should first delete history on the skin. That bakes the pose into the geometry.

    Are there way to make new fingers controller in Quick Rig?

    • @RolandReyer
      @RolandReyer  3 года назад

      It is not possible in Quick Rig, however, in the HIK panel you can select and assign all bones of a skeleton to the parts of the HIK Rig.
      This process will be much easier if you name the joints correctly according to the HIK specifications.

      @@RolandReyer I found a work-around. I kept it in T-pose, baked it into the mesh, then made a new rig to fit it. Bit of a hassle, but it worked. Unfortunately, I realized a bit late that the quick rig isn't very good for hand animation, so I have to build one from scratch anyway X(
