As a DoD employee with a pretty high clearance it is my opinion that one of the most significant security risks to this country is clearances given to political appointees. It really is a joke.

Regardless if he lied or not on his application, the higher the clearance the more thorough the investigators are into your background checks. For Sam to get a security clearance shows how broken the adjudication system was applied towards vetting him properly for his position.

I had a security clearance and was employed at a nuclear facility. You were required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to take a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) test and be interviewed by a psychiatrist. I highly doubt this guy had one. 😀

My old Art teacher, told the FBI she thought I smoked pot( 17 years old in the 70's). As a federal employee with a security clearance I know that this person was supposed to self-report after the first arrest in which case HIS clearance would have been pulled until after he was cleared. Apparently something is broken at the top level of government.

I've had conversations with a 60yr + friend and also with a 70yr+ family member who have literally told me they are glad they won't be around in 15 yrs to see the end of this country. It is really sad.

Sam Brinton worked for the Department of Energy and as such at DOE there is the "Q" level clearance: did Sam Brinton have a "Q" level security clearance? To me that is far more frightening than the luggage thefts and even more frightening is that he is dealing with nuclear waste.

Based on experience doing work for one of the predecessors of the DOE activity Brinton was heading (at least in title), realistically even a L clearance wasn't needed for that role. While there are some scary aspects regarding nuclear waste, radioactive waste management itself doesn't delve into classified information.
Exactly right. That was my Dad's clearance working with the old OSS/ Army Air Corp in WW2 and after at the Savannah River Plant. He called it Q clearance.

I had a friend that was going to work with nuclear weapons in the Military. When they did his security clearance it took 4 months and they went went back to 2nd grade teacher. They went to his neighbors they went to his old friends. They went to every state he lived in, they want to know if he even went on vacation out of the US even Canada. So I want to know how this freak got a security clearance.

No doubt. I was in the army for ten years, and served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Had to have one to do my job, and while I was in Afghanistan. They took it from me. Over a doctor bill I hadn't paid over 12 years ago, at that time. Gives me faith in my government, I tell ya.
