  • The Xbox Series X console as well as the PS5 are quickly aging in their ability to run games as devs move into the next generation and upgraded game engines to push the industry forward. Now there are big improvements coming to the current Generation Xbox that will boost performance, increase image quality and take big games from 30fps to 60 and beyond!
The first two years of this console generation especially on the Xbox Series X console has seen nearly every single game run at 60 FPS some at 120 FPS and all at very high resolutions. As developers have started to move their way out of cross-generation game design and are pushing next generation games on brand new games engines we are seeing a concern from fans and tech analysts that we may be moving into a future of more 30 FPS games on modern hardware.

4K 60 FPS can already be done on the current consoles so long as you basically have entirely last gen visuals. And next generation 4K 60 FPS will probably be possible with this generation's visuals. Native 4K is a waste of hardware resources, even on a high end PC. FSR3 Is great!! But honestly it's just a band-aid for poor optimization....
The problem is not the hardware, but rather the techniques that they're using and engine optimization.
Don't say the hardware is out dated and you still have yet to even come close to reaching it's full potential.
This is why devs are having a hard time developing for weaker hardware, so I will give an essay on my opinion and the technology they could implement in there engines and what they should do if it's not possible, and too expensive.
    1: -Sampler feedback streaming
Sampler Feedback Streaming (SFS) is a technique used in computer graphics to improve the efficiency of texture mapping.
It was introduced by NVIDIA as an extension to their graphics processing units (GPUs). SFS works by reducing the amount of memory bandwidth required for texture fetches, resulting in faster rendering times. In traditional texture mapping, each texel (texture element) is fetched from memory individually.
This can be inefficient, especially when multiple texels are needed for a single pixel on the screen. SFS solves this problem by using a hierarchical approach. The first step in SFS is to create a mipmapped version of the texture. Mipmapping involves generating multiple versions of the original texture at different resolutions.
This allows for more efficient sampling at different distances from the camera. During rendering, SFS uses feedback from previous frames to predict which texels will be needed in the current frame. It does this by analyzing the screen space derivatives of the texture coordinates and comparing them with those from previous frames. By predicting which texels will be needed, SFS can prefetch them into cache, reducing memory bandwidth usage.
Overall, Sampler Feedback Streaming is an innovative technique that improves performance in texture mapping by reducing memory bandwidth requirements. Its hierarchical approach and use of feedback make it an effective solution for real-time rendering applications.
    2-Direct storage
Another crucial technology is Direct Storage, it refers to the process of directly loading game assets from storage into memory, bypassing traditional input/output operations. This results in faster load times, improved performance, and enhanced gaming experiences.
One of the key advantages of Direct Storage is its ability to reduce latency. With traditional storage systems, games often suffer from long load times as data is transferred from storage to memory.
With Direct Storage, this latency is significantly reduced as assets are loaded directly into memory without any intermediate steps. Another benefit of Direct Storage is its ability to handle massive amounts of data efficiently. Modern games are becoming increasingly complex and require substantial amounts of storage space for their assets. Direct Storage allows developers to take advantage of high-speed solid-state drives (SSDs) and efficiently stream data into memory as needed.
Furthermore, Direct Storage enables developers to create more immersive worlds by allowing for larger and more detailed environments. With faster asset loading times, game designers can include more intricate textures, higher resolution models, and larger open-world maps without sacrificing performance.
In conclusion, Direct Storage has the potential to revolutionize gaming development by providing faster load times, improved performance, and enhanced visual fidelity.
As technology continues to advance and SSDs (Solid State Drives) become more prevalent in gaming consoles and PCs alike, we can expect this technology to become an integral part of future game development processes.
    3-Bcpack compression
Bcpack compression offers a solution to the limited storage capacity of the Xbox Series S. This innovative technology allows developers to optimize their games for the console's limited storage capacity without compromising visual quality.
By compressing textures and other game assets, BCPack reduces file sizes, enabling more content to be stored on the console's SSD. One of the key advantages of BCPack compression is its ability to retain high-resolution textures while significantly reducing their size. This is achieved through a combination of advanced algorithms and adaptive encoding techniques.
By analyzing the unique characteristics of each texture, BCPack can efficiently compress them without sacrificing detail or introducing noticeable artifacts. Furthermore, BCPack also supports variable rate shading (VRS), which further enhances performance by selectively reducing shader work in areas where it is less perceptible. This allows developers to allocate resources more efficiently, resulting in smoother gameplay and improved frame rates.
In addition to its technical benefits, BCPack compression also has practical advantages for game developers. With smaller file sizes, games can be downloaded faster and take up less storage space on users' consoles. This not only improves user experience but also allows developers to release updates and patches more frequently without burdening players with large downloads.
Overall, BCPack compression plays a vital role in game development on the Xbox Series S by optimizing storage usage while maintaining visual fidelity. Its ability to reduce file sizes without compromising quality makes it an essential tool for developers looking to create immersive gaming experiences on this next-generation console.
    4-Mesh shading
Mesh Shading implementation enhances rendering efficiency by distributing workload across multiple cores of the console's GPU. Mesh shading is a revolutionary technique in computer graphics that has the potential to address some of the inherent challenges faced by gaming consoles, such as the Xbox Series S.
Mesh shading is a rendering technique that focuses on processing small portions of a 3D model, known as meshes, rather than rendering each individual pixel. By dividing complex models into smaller sections, mesh shading allows for more efficient utilization of computational resources. This translates into improved performance and enhances visual quality.
The Xbox Series S, while a powerful gaming console, it faces limitations due to its lower resolution output compared to its sibling console, the Xbox Series X. However, by implementing mesh shading technology on the Series S, developers can optimize resource allocation and achieve better performance without compromising visual fidelity.
Mesh shading enables more efficient distribution of processing power across multiple meshes within a scene, resulting in smoother frame rates and reduced latency. Moreover, mesh shading also offers benefits in terms of memory management.
The Xbox Series S has limited memory capacity compared to other consoles or gaming PCs. With mesh shading's ability to render complex scenes using less memory by focusing on smaller sections at a time, developers can create more detailed environments without exceeding memory constraints.
In conclusion, mesh shading presents an exciting opportunity for addressing some of the challenges faced by the Xbox Series S. By optimizing resource allocation and improving memory management through this rendering technique, developers can enhance performance and visual quality on this console and the X.
    Common questions asked:
?1-The Playstation 5 does not support these features, so how will it be possible to use these features cross plat if some hardware is not supported?
Answer- Devs can use a cross-platform approach, by using the features on hardware that support it, and not use them on unsupported platforms. To solve this, devs could use their own proprietary API for PS5 and DX12U for Xbox series/PC (for GPUs that support it), just like Fortnite with xbox and pc using DX and PlayStation using their own proprietary API.
?2- This technology is expensive and takes time to implement, and it also may require rebuilding the engine from the ground up!! So how can we get better performance if we may not see these things until late 2024-2026?
Answer- Remember when Microsoft said to devs "Plan Better For The Series S", what I think the plan should be is to Prioritize performance on weaker hardware, (i.e Develop for weaker or xbox series S first before you do so for the XSX). I say this because it's basically guaranteed to get 1440P-4K 60 on series X and PS5, but it's not guaranteed to even get 1080p30 on the series S, the plan should be to prioritize series S performance before the others.

The frame gen tech has always felt worse the lower the base frame rate. Using the fake frames to go from 30 to 60 isnt going to be a great experience. If amd gets the anti lag working it may be okay to get a locked 60 rather than bouncing in the low 50s. This will be the new excuse to not do a native 60. No reason these consoles couldnt do 1080p60 all day

Get a PC would be fine, and a far superior option overall... whilst I got a Series X 2 years after launch, I'm happy with it, especially the speed of loading games and Quick Resume is a great feature.. Got a Hisense 55" Pro 4K 120 VRR recently and this has transformed my games... the next gen consoles should really have 20gb plus memory imo.. I'd be happy with 4k 120... only on an expensive pc build, assuming £2,000 onwards, but can't complain.. the TV is "future proof ' for now... enjoy!!!

Remember the 360,ps3 era, they done the impossible even until theast 2 or 3 years pumping out better and better looking games while still keeping them at the usual 720 to 1080p resolution at a usual choppy 30fps while devs now start off strong with 4K and 60fps for most games then as games look better they don't bother to bring the level of optimization they used to back in those days, a lot of times devs just leave consolel game graphics and performance on the same level as a pc with equivalent specs, consoles have usually been about a one time payment without having to upgrade for 5+ years to try and keep up with pc specs so devs would optimise as much as possible but now they don't these new technologies I guess could be used on console to bypass optimization, it's a good thing for consoles I think.

We will have to see but if you guys are worried about getting the right frames it’s time to build PC’s I heard so many of the Xbox guys/RUclips creators say that they have built pc’s just to make sure they can always play games at there best. But hey series x definitely is a great deal For $500 bucks but let’s not expect the boxes to run like PC’s. The consoles can only do so much!!

The consoles should've had a 5800 CPU instead of the 3700, sure in 2020, the 5800 was a bit more expensive, but they've been about the same price, for over a year.
The 3700 isn't even a gaming focused CPU, it's only about 3% better than the 3600 and 5% better than the 3300X, meanwhile the 5800 is 15% better than the 5600X and 30% better than the 3700.
Series X GPU should be clocked 15% higher and have 20Gb instead of 16Gb.

2:53 FSR 3 does not look ahead. What it does is delay the display of a frame so that it can use that information to create an interpolated frame. This is why using it will result in a lower response time. Its similar to what TVs do yo create an interpolated frame.

It’s hard to compare Series: X and PS5 to their desktop counterparts. Firstly, a Series: X may have what seems like a 6700 XT, but that 6700 XT is on a 320bit memory interface, which changes a fair amount. Not even the 6800 XT is on a 320bit bus, but the 6900 XT is. Same with Sony... Their GPU is in a 250bit bus, unlike the 6700 (non-XT). Then there’s board design and SSD designs. Just having a tiny micro ITX board, in a PC improves how fast the CPU can speak to other components, such as the GPU, which, in the console’s case? The SOC design further enhances that. It also means that less power is lost, when going from point A to point B. This is how ITX PCs gain the ability to make a full size GPUs work with what would normally be an underpowered PSU. This, in turn means greater efficiency and possibly less thermals, both of which should further decrease latency, enhancing that communication time. There’s some benefit to unified memory, too…especially once you’ve eliminated GDDR’s higher latency problem, which things like ESRAM, EDRAM or Infinity Cache help to rectify. Going back to the SSD, on PS5? It is faster than anything on PC, given it has special integrated hardware, to further NVME access/ read/ write times. That means PS5 can do DirectStorage better, which the better you do that? The closer you’ve come to mimicking system memory or even extra graphics memory… Of course, that’s the whole point of DirectStorage in the first place: to reduce those pop-in textures and remove load screens. Historically, load screens would take longer because the game had to load all the assets into VRAM before you started the game. Now it can just be streamed and pop you right into the game, instantly, like that shitty title called Forspoken had demonstrated.

pricing is kinda off colt. the equivalent PC is more like $700, and could probably squeeze in a zen 3 chip rather than going with an older zen 2 at that price. You may be able to find a used 6800 to fit that price point too.
while FSR3 will be a good addition to consoles, frame interpolation works best the higher your base framerate is before switching it on. Further optimization is needed for it to be a smooth experience in the longrun, but more devs will hopefully find workarounds.

Same gimmick that Nvidia is running with DLSS. In console settings, I understand doing this due to the lack of upgrade ability, but if I'm on a pc that has a 4070 or higher, I don't want to have to turn on any of this just to have better framerates at higher resolutions. It's bogus. We should not have to use a software that lowers the resolution and then upscales it just to get better framerates, when the framerates should be there to begin with.

Today's consoles CPU power, memory bandwidth and gpu's are leaps and bounds ahead of last generation. Now it's time to push these systems to their limits.

After seeing Forza Motorsport 8, the graphics a big let down and I reckon its due to the devs trying to implement Ray Tracing and it really hurts the overall graphics. Heck even Forza Horizon 4 looks much better graphically and that was made in 2018, developed for a weak xbox one and its also an open world racing game.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames is the solution as it's software based, not hardware based, not sure if Navi and Zen 2 can do it. It's just released for 7000 series GPU's which are a generation ahead of the 6000 series.
    It's AMD's DLSS.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames interpolation technology when used with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 3 inserts 1 frame between existing ones which can therefore enable up to 2x the framerate in supported games.
FSR 2 was used in FFXVI and some scenes went down as low as 720p to maintain frame rate, it's also in Starfield and on Series S it's horribly optimised with very poor frametimes and framerate drops, also causing crashes.
I find FidelityFX CAS can help which is also already in some titles e.g MW2 which is actually the best option for image quality both on PC and Console as I have had both versions and use CAS on Warzone.
The problem is it's 2023, we shouldn't need to be relying on Upscaling tech both on PC or Console, it's lazy, and if the games were actually properly optimised in the 1st place we would not even need this tech.
The tech as been in TV's for years and LG and Samsung even have AI chips in TV's basically doing the same thing mostly in OLED models since 2020.
PS5 Pro is due next year and will give 3080 to 3090 performance 4 years on with a hefty price tag, it's already leaked via Moore's Law is Dead and will be based on Navi 3.5 with 32 compute units, a higher bus speed and a 4nm die.
Series X refresh which as been leaked is simply moving to the 6nm die which Sony are already using in the PS5 3rd revision model released in December 2022 and it's the same board as the now announced Slim coming in November.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) interpolation is just the driver sided implementation and is not for the consoles. PS5 and Series X can both use FSR 3 FG (AMD's answer to DLSS 3 FG) which is much much better compared to AFMF and will be implemented by the developers themselves.
