What you said about femininity without needing figure hugging or flesh showing silhouettes really resonates. I was a teenager in the 80’s and have always loved the Japanese avant garde design aesthetic, there is an androgyny I’m drawn to. I’ve never been interested in ‘French girl chic’ !

It's so intriguing to me. Incredibly refreshing and grounding somehow, it is so freeing to see a reinterpreted version of feminine attire (or just from a different cultural perspective) The avant garde calls to me more often these days 💃

That was so helpful! Love seeing the modest feminine outfits that lack even waist emphasis. They look so cozy and graceful.

I also was heavily influenced by fruits! Another thing I find so inspirational about Japanese fashion is that people will bring a devotion to a specific aesthetic that spans a lifetime and the results are stunning.

Really love this. I've been drawn since I was quite young to volume, architectural shapes, and muted colours. I don't care about fitting in with others at all.

Love to hear it! 😻 I think I chased many more streamlined aesthetics in the past to my detriment (as my own personality is more dishevelled and untamed) the words "architectural shapes" just give me shivers 🤌✨ so so so good

I do think modesty is one thing that really sets apart the east from the west. Particularly, I light of this video, Japanese from American.
Most people think of showing skin when they think of modesty, but that's a very American way of thinking of modesty. That's not what it means. Modesty is being unassuming, not being showy, simplicity.
Japanese women do modesty so well because they dress simply and quietly. Even when they wear bright colors or patterns, there is always a sense of covered quietness to their outfits that you don't really see in America.
In the US, individuality is key. Standing out. Not so in Japan. There is a sense of conformity and togetherness. So the culture feels more modest, not because people are more covered, but because people are more similar.

Exactly as you said, I love how you have articulated it here. It's the unassuming simplicity! It's so refined, from a place of understanding the individual being in harmony with the group. I have a lot of respect for that 🥰✨️

Japan obviously has subcultures but baseline its about simplicity and minimalism, with a ton of frills? It depends, like middle aged women will wear often more minimalistic monotones, while younger people wear school girl skirts and plad frills. I think your take is very accurate, like you said, there is no one japan aesthetic.

And also bear in mind that I have yet to visit this beautiful country to observe first hand - so I'm relying on the inspiration that I find from online etc etc. Just like with any country there will be more and less stylish folks 🥰 and japanese minimalism is a look which I also see but couldn't find too many images to show off ✨️
