Thanks for the vid! Great stuff. I started using chicken waste and coop pine shavings mixed with my soil for all my tomato plants, peppers, cucumbers and broccoli. Seems to be thriving this year because of that!
I base my watering on 1. Soil dryness (I will water when the top 3 inches are drier, not dried completely but not totally soaked) I give them all a good healthy drink about 3 times a week (I water like this when I have to give the chickens more water)... Everyone will make watering mistakes... Best thing to remember is most plants are forgiving to a point and even us that have been gardening for 40 something years make mistakes....
Absolutely! I love that you mentioned that even though you’ve been gardening for 40 years you still make mistakes. I think that’s the most important part is that mistakes are made and to just work through them as they come!
Well....Now I know watering is my biggest mistake. Pretty sure I am currently making all 5 of those mistakes. This was an awesome video. Thanks Brandon.
I still make some of them 😂, it happens! Thanks Tyler! I heard something about an insane grasshopper swarm in your area. Like 70 of them per square foot just tearing all the gardens apart in a matter of hours. Have you seen any of that?
Yep, definitely tricky for me. I look at the weather forecast & if it says "no precip expected" or very low chance of rain, then I water. Inevitably, we get a late afternoon thunderstorm & my plants are over watered & look sickly. sigh. And I don't water at night in order to reduce slug & earwig pressure. Oh well, I'll just keep adjusting & learning. Thanks for this helpful video. Definitely need to mulch.
It’s been raining here almost every evening and it hasn’t actually been in the forecast for a couple weeks, it just keeps surprise raining on us 😂! You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
I do not. We were in such a hurry this year to get the garden done that we didn’t get that filmed. Next season I’ll get it done though when the garden isn’t completely full!
This year my biggest mistake was planting my tomatoes too close and not having proper cages or stakes to tie them up and now they are so unruly I’m not even sure where to start to fix them 🤦🏼♀️
We made that same exact mistake last year! …and the year before 😂. Pruning helps, but it’s hard to keep up on. Are you able to pull some out to give the others room? I wasn’t about to do that.. we just pruned a lot but it honestly gave us a pretty terrible harvest because of it. This year we gave them PLENTY of room and we built some heavy duty cages to support them.
My hose connection from the house is on the opposite side of my house, so I stretch my hose and it absolutely does not even reach my garden area yet. I said I was going to get another hose to attach to it but I just fill up a 5 gallon bucket and let it sit out overnight to get rid of the chlorine and use a cup to water at the base. But it's rained three separate times today and it's been raining all day for the past week plus, so it's all too much water right now. Except for my cherry tomatoes that couldn't handle it, everything is growing well fortunately.
This was very helpful , I learned a lot ! I still water with a hose and hope to switch to drip irrigation to at least some areas . Thanks for a great video ! 😊👏
Zucchini gets crazy! This is the first year we actually planned for that 😂. Buuuuuut as of last night I think the squash bugs won the war with our zucchini plant. Pest control is an everyday fight here! Hey thanks! It was by far the biggest garden job I’ve ever done, it was about 2.5 months of working on it every day after work and every weekend but it was worth it!
Good tips. I use cardboard for mulch. Large plain pieces and shredded cardboard around the plants. I try to make a lot of compost. Takes awhile. Also, trying Charles Dowding's no-dig method.
We have been saving our cardboard for the same thing! Our last two years in ground we did no did, definitely recommend it! We used to till the whole thing up but switched and never looked back! We will be doing something similar in our raised beds!
I have availability to med grade pine shavings was going to eventually do my paths in it but am wondering can I use it around my plants? How thick would you do it.
Totally agree with the overhead watering…except it’s been crazy hot and I have been lightly spraying my green stalks too cool them down before the heat of the day.

I love it! I’m actually filming a video on Wednesday talking about that! Seriously good stuff!

Thank you for saying this. Watering correctly is my biggest challenge.

Bad solenoids in the sprinkler manifold have been my trouble for 2 seasons. I’ve been yo-yo watering. 😥 I think they’re all fixed now. 😅
Sprinklers sometimes end up being this never ending string of problems 😂, my front yard is that way!
Glad you got it squared away!
Hello, do you have a video on the drip system you have installed?
I do not. We were in such a hurry this year to get the garden done that we didn’t get that filmed. Next season I’ll get it done though when the garden isn’t completely full!
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead No worries, i completely understand. Really enjoy your videos!

I’m glad you’ve had the rain, definitely helpful when your hose isn’t easily accessible! Hopefully it just doesn’t rain TOO much 😂

Awesome, I’m happy to help!!
Nothing wrong with hand watering, honestly it’s probably the best way to go… just not the most convenient 😂
Biggest mistake: plant placement. Zucchini took over.
Corn- didn’t plant enough for fertilizing
2nd mistake- pest control
PS your raised garden looks so nice. Good job!

@harddocs yes, correct!
