- This Day in History, April 28
On April 28, 1788 Maryland became the 7th state to ratify the United States Constitution, resulting in, among other things, it becoming the seventh state of the united states. Maryland’s capital is Annapolis, and its largest city is Baltimore, and the Washington-Baltimore metro area being the largest metro or urban area in Maryland.
Maryland covers 12,407 square miles of area, making it the ninth smallest state by land area, but is the 18th most populous state, and the fifth most densely populated state.
Maryland is named after Henrietta Maria, the French-born queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland during the 17th century. The nations capital, Washington DC, is tucked into a little corner between Maryland and Virginia. Maryland’s nicknames include “Old Line State” and “Chesapeake Bay State,” and People from Maryland are known as Marylanders.
Maryland’s state bird is the Baltimore Oriole, State cat is the Calico Cat, and the State dog is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Maryland’s state flower is the Black-eyed Susan, and the state tree is the White Oak. The Chesapeake Bay Estuary is is a significant feature of the geography and the economy of the state of Maryland and plenty of fishing takes place there, with catches of blue crab, oysters, and striped bass being the largest catches. Other wildlife include white-tailed deer, black bears, bobcats, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, otters, and even a feral pony called the Chincoteague (pronounced shing-kuh-teeg) Pony.
Happy Statehood Day, Maryland!
