I bought the brushed Rustler 4x4 and almost immediately had buyers remorse so I've been upgrading it to a brushless. I'm new to the hobby so it was a good way to learn my way around the truck but damn it was expensive. I should have just bought the brushless to begin with. I had everything done except for the differentials and the slipper clutch; which I replaced today while watching this video. It was really helpful. Thank you.
@Jermaine H Thanks for the kind words. My buyer's remorse was partly about speed I guess, but mostly it was because I was burning up brushed motors. I live in an area that is all sand and most of the places I'm able to run my RC is sandy. As it turns out, sand is really hard on brushed motors.
This is great information. I bought a pair of Rustler 4x4s for my 2 young boys recently and they love them. I told them that if they learn to control them, I will step them up a notch. I know there are a lot of high quality 1/10 scale bashers I could have bought from other brands, but the main reason I went with Traxxas was for the training mode. My kids love driving them and they are at 50% power! Granted, my kids are 4 and 5 yrs old (oldest will be 6 in June). They had lots of practice with my E-Revo 2.0 on training mode. Using the TQi remote and the Traxxas link app, i was able to keep them under 20 mph on 6s. I feel like i will be able to step them up to 100% power soon and that should keep them happy for a while. Then, when they are ready, I can step them up to brushless. With the "Power up" program through Traxxas, I can upgrade the motor and ESC for ~$125. Also, maybe they will get bored with them and not care to upgrade. Then I have a couple of Rustlers to play with my friends that don't have cars to introduce them to the hobby (or when my E-Revo is in need of repair).
Yep, my brushed 4x4 version is REALLY SLOW. If you get an XL-5 in one of the lighter 2wd models, you might be OK, but I'm running 7-cell niMh in this model, and am a little disappointed. I haven't switched to LiPo yet, but if I did run 2S, it wouldn't give me any more speed, as I'd only have 7.4 volts. The tires make a lot of noise on blacktop, also, so they are probably robbing a little speed. Recently, I've seen the Rustler VXL 4x4 for sale without a battery and charger for 379.95. Fortunately, I have a spare older Velineon.
upgrade parts are about 256.49. so in total your spending about 556.48 for this car. great video thank you for taking the time to show this. me and my wife picked up the brushless versions and i picked up the brushed for the kids thinking it would be cheap to upgrade later. doesnt look like ill be doing this.
Jaden Kargel Thanks for the video I was thinking about the brushed also but now I’m getting brushless. I was wondering more less how much it would be to upgrade. Thanks for all the information
You did a great video but if I may suggest, there is something wrong in mounting the clutch: you have to move the pin in the shaft towards the hole closest to the center because the metal plate screwed on the spur has a recessed hole and the origina One has a protruding one. And the wheelie bar is needed. Other than that it's the most comprehensive video ever. Good job
One other small difference between the brushed and brushless models are in the bellcranks. The VXL bellcranks come with bearings instead of the XL5's bushings. Good video though!
Hi. I already have a VXL3s combo at hand so I would like to get a Rustler 4x4 Brushed to ease on the costs. For the same reason, which parts of the conversion to brushless specs would you do first (or that you think are mandatory) and which one could wait. Thanks.
It honestly depends on what you want to do with it. Like do you want adjustability, durability, or just to make it work? If you just want to make it work for with esc/motor, and fix stuff when it breaks
Christian Boucher the clutch would probably be fine, the old vxl models use them old style organic pads from factory same with the old style slash 4x4 metal diffs do fine aswell. the slash is damn near bulletproof lol these are more of just performance upgrades like for gear ratio, rather than for durability.
Why on mine after trying to install the slipper clutch 5352r the shaft is now to long and I cannot tight the spring. The back plate or different. The center of the old one is popping out and the center of the new by plate is curved in?!?!?!
NO ONE ELSE could have made a video any better than this one. You explained it all. No questions left unanswered. Thank you.

i know it's kind of randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online?
@@rockymatthias3593 I do
Doing this when the parts arrive. I chose to forgo the slipper upgrade in favor of the Traxxas center diff. Those metal gears should sound lovely.
i accidentally bought a rustler 4x4 vxl slipper clutch for my slash 4x4 and it made it a torque monster lol the new “revo spec” slipper is really good
The lesson I learned from this video is, if you buy a Rustler, get the brushless edition.
I agree
Right

i agree, but isn't the work of converting the fun part??? i don't know about you but when i work on mine i actually feel good.
What’s the biggest spur gear you can put in it?

Ya buying brushless first is definitely the way to go.
Jaden Kargel

You forgot to add the Wheelie bar that the VXL version comes with. That's about another 30 dollars you can add to your laundry list of parts.
@@19Herofade92 Don't forget to add in the servo too. The XL-5 uses the 2056 analog servo while the VXL uses the stronger digital 2075 servo.
So glad i bought the vxl version after watching this 😮

Great video very informative👊

Good video though!
Totally awesome. Hope to see more video's.
Keep it coming mate! Thumbs up
Just bought a rustler brushless is there anything I need to know or do before running it?
I know this is 4 years later but did you find a battery strap compatible with 3S batteries? I haven’t been able to find anything.
you guys should put a brush to brushless conversion kit on your site

Yeah what he said☝🏾
It honestly depends on what you want to do with it. Like do you want adjustability, durability, or just to make it work? If you just want to make it work for with esc/motor, and fix stuff when it breaks
At the rate of speed you move at to disassemble and reassemble the parts are head spinning mind-boggling.
nice to find this video I am going to upgrade mine hopefully go by the store on this days
Is that a complete parts list?
Just bought a brand new slash 4x4.. is it normal for the central shaft to move near 1/2 inch back and forth?
helped me a lot, thank you very much!
Great conversion bro !
thnx for this video man, really helpful as a newbie
is there a part number for the kit or do you have to order it all seperate
You guys should sell an upgrade kit with all parts needed for this upgrade. Maybe 2 kits: one with motor and ESC and one without.
why on mine when i try putting the centre drive shaft in, it doesnt fit into the front and had to unscrew the old one off.
When putting in the aluminum Center driveshaft is it supposed to move from front to back
Yeah, it has some back and forth movement. I recently got a VXL model and it has that from factory.
How should my brushless motor feel shut it spin very freely
It will have some resistance from the magnets but should be easy to turn by hand.
where u located if i send u mine can u do it ti mine i need more speed to slow for me
Enfield ct
Did you use the 5379x in both axles? Or 6879
Hi can I get the traxxas part numbers for the upgrade for the brushless motor and diff and drive shafts. Thanks
Are the gearing and clutch upgrades needed to run brushless?
The Brushless system will drop in with no other upgrades. I would say the stock parts will be fine on a 2 cell but may not hold out to long on 3 cell
Christian Boucher the clutch would probably be fine, the old vxl models use them old style organic pads from factory same with the old style slash 4x4 metal diffs do fine aswell. the slash is damn near bulletproof lol these are more of just performance upgrades like for gear ratio, rather than for durability.
Joe thanks
I think imma do the same except make it 6s

Philippe Lanteigne I’m having the same problem. Have you figured it out?
@@anitamilligan2289 there's two hole in the shaft for the pin that secure the plate. put it in the other hole.
Thank you!!!!
hello can i put a brushless motor in my rustler brushed if i don't change my diferential?
Yes.
What kind of grease are you using? Does it have to be certain kind?
Standard white lithium grease
I use black gear grease.
Hey there bro good videos Thankyou.
Will a 3s fit in this, or only 2s?
Up to 3S
is the 11 tooth pinion gear too a must?
Not necessarily
What’s the largest spur gear you can run on it?
I think 54 tooth, which is the stock one. Traxxas does also sell a 56 and 58 but I don't think they fit in this truck
Good information and video!
I have a brushed rustler 4x4 are all these steps necessary?
No
If you wanted to, you could put just the brushless system in and it would work perfectly fine.
Do you have a parts list with the traxxas part numbers?
Steve Ross i think he does not have. But you can just search “motor” and you see the part number.
Oh, in the description are the part Numbers he used.
I think the slipper plate and disk is wrong part numbers 5351 and 5352 are the stock slipper plates. Not sure what the correct ones are though
You didnt swap the plastic front center drive mount or plastic center drive its self bruh! Lol
Speed max no 29,84 mph
Real speed max with nimh; 17,40 mph
Real speed max with lipo 2S ; 18,02 mph
I always say don't waste your time buying the brushed versions.
You forgot the shock springs
I would probably leave the XL-5 linear springs on there tbh. I'm not a fan of the progressive springs from Traxxas.
