    I assume the reason the Greedy Cup still works in a vacuum is because it's function isn't the same as a syringe. There is clearly some similar physics involved between a syringe and the cup, but the main difference is that the cup is actually a tube with holes on both ends while a syringe is not, only having an open hole on one end. I'm honestly not sure about the details as to why a tube would work and a syringe would not, but this begs the question: Are the forces at play with the cup actually suction or something else entirely?

    • @_purble
      @_purble Год назад +1

      (A bit late to answer, but) The force involved here is gravity. Apart from anything else, you intuitively know that a syringe works any way up, but this cup will only work when it's standing the right way up

    • @witia1
      @witia1 6 месяцев назад

      Sringe to work uses force of atmosphweric preasure pressing agains liquid so creates lower preasure envoirments that liquid can fill.
      And as preasure inside sringe can't get lower than vaccume, it cannot create force pulling liquid in in vaccume chamber.
      But with enough of liquid in container to submerge sringe in, it would work again.
      Higher layers of liquid, due to gravity, would preasurase liquid and sringe would again be lower preasure envoirment.
      So highes point to which sringe can be filled in vacume chamer is level of liquid it was submerged in.
      Cup difference of preasure creates inside siphon and due to waight of water comming through it.
      As bottom of cup is being presed by all water in top of it, watter going through siphon is being pulled by waight of water going through siphon.
      And as leg of cup is higer than distance from bottom of cup to top of siphon then water going through creates more pull in that direction.
      Important part is that diameter of siphon is low enough that it can be sealed by surface tension of liquid going through as if vaccume would be present in siphon when level of water is bellow siphon height then waight of water in leg could get lower than nessesery to pull more water through and flow would stop.
      For cup to stop working, it would need to be in free fall and then it stops working regardless of atmosphere neing present or not, while in atmosphere and free fall sringe should still work :)

      Syphons were understood and used for water clocks. It was just a simple matter of bending a reed in the right shape and molding the clay around it. After the cup is allowed to dry and is fired, the reed burns off inside and the ashes in syphon could easily cleaned out as easily as just blowing on the bottom of the cup.

    The water levels in the two (or more) vessels will only remain the same so long the the air pressure above the surface of water remains the same. Otherwise drinking straws wouldn't work.

  • @WolfRose11
    @WolfRose11 2 года назад

    The law of communicating vessels also only applies to the same height if the pressure to each opening is the same. So you can also defeat the greedy cup by blocking the outlet with a finger the same way you can block a straw and lift the fluid. Edit: I wrote the finger block before seeing the video end.

    Two points of order:
    1) I think "cavitation" refers to a void with an absence of matter. Your vacuum would have to be pretty thorough to achieve that. And upon achieving that, I don't think there would be any liquid water left in the system. At a near-vacuum, those voids are filled with water vapor, which flows and and attracts like a liquid, but a very stretchy one.
    2) Periodic Videos did an experiment a while back to demonstrate that siphons do in fact work in the absence of air pressure. They used a type of liquid that does not boil in the absence of pressure.
    An "incomplete" cavitation bubble is a low-pressure gas bubble. It changes its size based on the pressure of its environment. And other aspects of its behavior are similarly subject to the pressure of the environment. These vapor bubbles have the same pressure as the liquid that surrounds them. And mathematically, "same pressure" means "same force per cross sectional area" of the vessel, including the tubes. The vapor transmits the force of the liquid, in equal measure.

    This is exactly what I've teached to a lot of people when working in the oil fields. They should always measure the tanks using a ruler from the top in case there's oil in the water or vice-versa and not to measure using the transparent hose on the side. If they would've listened, many spills would have been avoided.
    In case someone is wondering, the tanks used in an oil field job usually has a transparent hose on one side, connected to the tank from the top and the bottom and it's used to see the level of fluid inside the tank, but that only works if the totality of the fluid has the same density and base. In case there's water and oil gets inside, the oil won't have the enough weight to push the water inside de hose to the same level and you will think that the level inside the tank is way lower than it actually is. Very common scenario while doing a well testing job where the separator can be wrongfully operated causing one fluid to drain to the incorrect tank.
