The Simond Chacal followed later developing from the Terrordactyl which was the creation of the Scottish climber Hamish MacInnes. Yvonne Chouinard visited Scotland which in spite of its unpredictable winter climbing conditions was the proving ground for new ice tool development. Two design themes ran for some years, the MacInnes inclined pick and the Chouinard drooped pick. One subject not mentioned was ice screw design. These had the be cranked into the ice using the axe as a lever. The first screws that could be placed solely by hand made fixing protection much quicker and safer and aided the development of ever harder climbs.
