Along time ago.......1959, Catalina was very popular,(not like today) we moored stern first backing down into "4th of July Cove"..........then tying off to the bow line........''fore-n-aft"...........these lines were held near the surface by a buoy that had a pole attached.......depth was about 50 feet. Cant ever remember problems with "set and drift" or boaters fouling up the anchorage. We would spend a few days there, then head for the Northwest! Something about the oder of Canadian bacon, fresh brewed coffee coming up from below and a fresh breeze.................that was then! Stay safe!
I am definitely with you on this. It's also dicey to say something because they've been drinking all day and you never know how crazy they'll get.
I’m Extremely happy to watch your wisdom and tolerance towards Humans that are usually overrated !!! Bravissimo
1:53 Emerald Steel looks lovely sitting at anchor...a sturdy little ship!
People anchoring too close to our boat is common practice unfortunately. As you said, how to tell them to relocate without creating enemies is difficult. Cheers, Richard
Thanks for the free lessons in life 🌅
Fair winds and long may you continue to entertain and educate us all !
Such a beautiful place where buffalos prefer walking among houses and tourists! :) Concerning those guys on the shining boat, I think everyone, at least once, stumbled on such folks. The less experience they've got, the more cocky and obnoxious they are.
Great video; the anchoring bit sums up Catalina Island in the summer. Here is one of my experiences at Whites, in July, I was anchored. The forecast was for above average W to NW winds to wrap the island, including the east side anchorages. At one point Saturday I was standing on the bow lashing the dinghy down in preparation for our 4am departure the next morning when a guy standing on the bow of his 60' yacht was drifting by me toward the sea at about 4kts and very kindly asked me from about 30' away "are you okay?". I replied "I am", and asked him in return "How about you? Are you dragging anchor on purpose?" He looked confused and replied "Oh, I thought it was you that was moving!". He then scrambled to the helm to start his twin engines on his yacht called Rampage and eventually moved to start what would become a 30 minute effort involving a harbor boat and folks on two other inflatable boats to get him attached to a mooring ball in wind that had gusts to 25kts. I thanked God that he did not drag into us. The thing is... he came, set his anchor for the light onshore breeze we had when he arrived, only put out about 1:1 rode and probably had no clue that the forecast (that had been consistent for days) was for 25kt westerlies later that day and throughout the evening. I like it over there much better in Jan / Feb. Good to see you cutting up in the dinghy; stay young at heart!!
As always a pleasure
You guys rock
Well done Jules & lovely lady whose name I forget for a moment.
I met that guy's father 40 years ago in Gibson's harbour, British Columbia. I'd been sailing my first boat, a 25' Thunderbird, for 2 months, and even I knew about scope. My neighbour in a boat I would have gone to war for, didn't. He too put out almost the exact same ratio as your folks, then headed for the bar. I watched that boat begin to drift as the tide raised the anchor off the floor, boarded it, and tried to put an anchor out, couldn't, so I tracked those dunderheads down in the bar and said, "Hey man, your boat's adrift and headed towards the rocks." They flew! I had a beer! :D
Thanks for the video - my wife was shocked by the behaviour of those young men - and she is no sailor! She thought Jules showed admirable constraint!
Always enjoy your vids, your wisdom of the sea.Jane, Philadelphia
Another great episode guys 👍
You did well.
Sometimes you have to go slowly and calmly when dealing with stupid.
Best comments EVER !!!
Glad to see that you both are doing well!
Stay safe and keep having fun!
You seem to be able to live quite cheaply you should do a video on what you spend in a week.
One night at Alberts on Santa Cruz Island a couple anchored right next to us. I mentioned to the fellow he was a bit close but he wasn't bothered so he stayed put. Around 0300 I awoke to have a look around and noticed we were transom to transom 2 feet apart. I stepped aboard his boat and knocked on his hatch. When he saw what was up, he raised his anchor and motored off into the night. It's too bad but Catalina is a disaster if you want to "get away from it all".
When a man like Jules speaks...I listen. The power of intuition is sadly lost on many people today. Good to hear from you guys! Be well!
Yep, and we try to help and educate them, through our channels, share our experience over the years, pass on some hard earned wisdom and personal history as to why we anchor the way we do. It's pointless! Like trying to catch fog with a fishing net! The days when you learnt your skills as an apprentice, from an older generation that passed on their skill to you and taught you the basics first, are gone. Basic seamanship is disappearing in a haze of electronic fog and a a world where pushing the right button is considered a greater skill than knowing what it does and how it works! Great self control displayed in a video that only some will watch, not those that need to, but those that appreciate the content. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Them city folk could have had the whole bay to anchor in. But, they would have still achored right next to you.
Seen it happen... to me 😡
It why I’m here to learn and see because I want to get my first sailboat in a couple years I do get what your saying but some of us very much appreciate the wisdom of experience 👍👍
Man if I had a steel boat I wouldn't worry about a million dollar Hinkley bumping into me if he anchored like that
Fun video.....when I had my boat in the BVI, crew and friends would ask why I would anchor so far from the beach/ dinghy access....”hold my beer”....i would tell them that the afternoon show would start by 3....grab a sundowner (early) and watch all the charter boats crowd the anchorage, resulting most nights in the anchor dance by 0200! And of course the skippers all knew better..... thanks, Andrew
you were right to point out that you were worried about their boat , takes away their need for aggression ....
Always shocking how little some boaters know about the basics. Glad they moved.
Thanks again for sharing guys.
👍👍👍👍 I would guess those young guys didn’t know anything about anchoring and were just passengers. Whose reaction would be just about right for the situation. 🙂
Not surprised in the least. Your spot at Whites Landing was my go-to spot on Catalina for many years, before the moorings. But the water around Catalina is deep water anchoring everywhere and the island is beautiful but cursed by being just a few miles from twenty million people with nowhere else to go in a boat but there. I gave up dealing with all the idiots and their anchoring ignorance and left twenty years ago. But on a positive note, I'm pleasantly surprised that after twenty years have passed, it's not a hundred times worse than your experience. Cheers, really enjoy your perspective.
👍!!!
nice to see you ...been some time. keep well and stay safe.
I think that was the same weekend I swam over and introduced myself. I was happy to have a mooring that time. The anchorage was way too crowded! ~Mark
Some people?..Take care and stay safe.love your videos!
Nice video.
When you built Emerald Steel you should've installed torpedo tubes! 😂
Hand them a 1 page copy of an official guide to anchoring showing scope, swing area, etc. I find that people will follow written advice over verbal. It might light their fire to finally study up and acknowledge they really don't know what they're doing. Keep various guide sheets handy for different situations. That way you're only trying to help, not argue.
Any time an old salt speaks to me, I listen! To bad not all have that attitude.
I love Emerald Steel, just beautiful, and the folks aboard aren't bad either. ;)~~
We guys just need to cut loose sometimes. lol I have always dreaded dealing with people that do not know how to anchor. Glad you are enjoying your time on Catalina though. :)
Don’t matter where you live or are anchored you will come across a few. 🥜’s
Sitting in your lap! To bad your bow diden't get them......on the hook or on the bowsprit! Barbro Sweden
My experience in SoCal waters, plenty of money zero seamanship.
Thumps up!
I remember 45 years ago when I was a dumb a$$ newbie. Thankfully I learned the rule...
When I asked an old salt "Who has the right of way?", he told me, "Stay away from everybody, they're tryin to kill ya"!
Haha! Driving a motorcycle also teaches this lesson
Emerald steel would have torn up that boat...might have been a good lesson 😉
We were anchored in the same exact last week!
you can't fix stupid. But Jules knows how to negotiate w/ it.
Year's ago while anchored on the East side of Singapore, between S'pore and Malaysia, [The Johore straights], a 40 ft Sailboat sailed in and anchored, normally they would have been far enough away, but that anchorage has the La Paz waltz condition, [wind against current], i told the crew they were to close, and explained why, so, off they went to immigration, customs, ect., while away the waltz started, and the Ketch ended up along side of me, with fender's out, i tied the Ketch along side, when they returned that was what they saw, long story short, i ended up purchasing" White Wings," another story by Pete Culler, east coast shipwright and designer back in the 30'S, sailed a Spray replica, probably the first, talks about boats dragging down on him, and his Bobstay sawing away on the boat, so back even then, dragging down onto one was a problem.
Anyone anchoring like that near me is gonna get a visit and a lesson in proper anchoring technique. If the get salty about it, I'll weigh anchor and move upwind of the idiots or leave if possible. Failing that, I'll put out all my fenders, and pray the wind doesn't pick-up!
There is no shortage of stupidity! Perhaps they will gain experience and insight overtime. The natural surroundings were so stunning!
Jules is very nice. Nicer than me that’s for sure. Maybe it has something to do with having a steel boat. But I’m surprised that boat didn’t drag anchor within the first five minutes. 85 feet of rode in 65 feet of water just doesn’t work.
Wonderful to hear from you again! So good to see you out, traveling and enjoying life. Once again, Emerald Steel was Queen of the bay! She is such a classic beauty among the high dollar yachties!! Where are you off to next? Any long range trips opening up, yet?
I was wondering if you would run into James and Camille. Two of my favorite channels.
Great catching up with you and your adventures with Buffalo and anchoring with others bit to close for comfort. Watching from Wales 11 50 pm blowing a cool North wind. Thank you always learn a lot from you all the best buzz #buzzofftoxic #tiedamew
I love you both . Beautiful legends both . Sorry for the new age assholes these days. Keep being you
That’s why I use a marker buoy on top of the anchor.
Yep, we've done that and a boat tied to it and pulled my anchor up....I've even seen people tie up to a lobster cage buoy!
Than the float must have sign .. “ if you tight on this you will be shot 😂😂😂”
Here in north Europa all anchor markers are yellow or red .. means not to use it for any thing.
Unfortunately thats not a international code.
I believe An electric air horn is 129 decibels.🔊🔉📣🎶📯🔉🔊🔉🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
That's loud enough to cause immediate harm to your hearing ...
Think they'll get the point then? .Its all in the timing guys ....Right when you see they are about to drop anchor . Works every time ,besides anyone dropping anchor that close is an A hole and you wouldn't want them as friends anyway..lol
Ya can not fix stupid

Tidy
Cum on, Suzy!
For real! There is no reason und to wonder about Jules!
If you don´t know, let me tell you: the only real difference between a small boy and a fully grown man is just, the toys are more expensive! 😜
Stay strong, in these crazy times! 😎👍
3:57 what if they refuse to move what do you do then? We used to go camping at the coast on an island that was 11 miles long. No roads you get there by ferry. I'd be camping on the beach in the same spot for 2 days. No body insight of me either direction then some bozo pulls up 100 yards from me and sets up camp. To save my sanity I packed up and moved 1/2 mile to get away from them.
Hi, I would video record my warning to them and then sit back and see how they react when Emerald Steel started hitting them. On the other hand if they were not impeding me from lifting my anchor I would probably just leave because the situation wouldn't justify me using my belaying pin to set them straight 😅
@@SailingEmeraldSteel Ha ha! I like the first scenario. I'm sure Emerald steel would do more damage to the little shiny boat. But still there would be some damage to her as well. People just don't respect others space anymore.
You can never trust that the other sailor knows what he is doing. Anybody that has the money to buy a boat can be a sailor. Just be glad that they make car drivers at least demonstrate that they know how to drive. You should start your video camera when the pull up and film the whole time. Then if you get hit and damaged, you take the film of the drunks and present it to their insurance carrier along with you bill for damages. I doubt they will argue with you much, if at all. 8-)
✌️
A great deal of money doesn’t always equal superior intelligence.
worse still it sometimes breeds arrogance. Ignorance + arrogance = Douchebag
Must be very annoying when other boaters anchor like that and cause problems.
At least they were not rude to you and moved.
For any boat over a certain size you should either have a certain number of years of experience or if a newbie a proper certificate for any boats say over 40 feet long.
Great video thank you.
SO then when they built Emerald Steel they should not have been allowed to sail her? they were new at the time too ya know...
Personal responsibility should be remembered.
yep, typical. and so many like that feel it is their right to play music so loud it vibrates your boat. This seems to be most prevalent in so calif for some reason.
like you don't have the right to peace and quiet.
i have never understood that type of mentality. hopefully mother nature will humble them at some point and be a better teacher than any human could be.
Did you have a teaching moment buy explaining calmly 7 : 1 scope to those aquatic clueless ?
I know you are glad you did the things you did when you were younger? The young people now don't even know what they missed.
We know there was a time when beaches were not covered in plastic and garbage.
What brand of shirt is Jules wearing ?
I haven't been to Catalina Island in over 40 years
Hi, He gets them from Bass Pro. RedHead Rock Creek Short-Sleeve Shirt For Men. Has about 12 short and long sleeved. Likes the double breasted pockets and weight of the material. Good price, too!
We have the same problems here in Australia with stupid boat owners, in popular areas, Then they wonder why the shit has hit the fan when a storm comes through. Doesn't make for a relaxing time ....
That was a Palm Beach, Aussie boat.
your just like us... we tell them if you your shiny glass boat comes in to contact with my steel boat its going be a mess so please move off to a safer distance.
they should be required to have sign on side of boat, "LEARNER PERMIT" like kids here have on cars when they dont have license to drive yet. ha
Training wheels…
It’s remarkable that they were so cavalier regarding the owner’s substantial investment. This type of buffoonery and arrogance from motor boaters is quite common in BC. I’ve been watching your videos for four years, and they’re always a delight. My only complaint is that you don’t make more of them!
Sad to see the shoreline taken up by moorings and too many people.
usual good stuff ( see sailor james and his chick )
The warrior had to sort that mainship 43 out .. don’t worry once the crash comes that will be the 1st to be gone along with the spoilt kids
Only the motoboat captain/owner 'might' cry. The rest, that where aboard, will just walk away.
As an American, seeing that Eagle floaty at the stern of their boat says it all. Americans these days have the attitude that they can do no wrong. They won't listen to logic because they always assume they are right. I live in a town of people who all think their ass doesn't stink, but everyone else's does. Not sure how it got to be this way. They have forgotten we share this planet with many people and we should be considerate and learn to listen. Had they listened to you, they would have learned something.
Frustrating position to be in. Its rarely taken well by others when you suggest they have anchored too close. Sounds like you navigated this one well. For the others, I have a euphemism for them "ahoy holes".
When are you guys head to Mexico...get away in the Sea of Cortez.
i just cant believe people are that ignorant in every sense of the word...its so beautiful in your area.
...people like that are the first to cry, when something goes wrong and THEY are in danger! And that's why I don't sail to spots like that!
The funny thing is, of all who were on that boat, I can pretty much guarantee only one will ever be a boat owner. The rest...its to complicated for them. Way to much thinking and planning to do.
Thanks for the sanity check!! I never know if I'm reacting properly in a situation like this, so it's nice to see that old salts like you are also nervous, checking on the neighbor from inside your boat :) I had this happen at the most beautiful anchorage in all of SoCal, Coches Prietos, until I left at 4 AM after a sleepless night, as a much larger boat was swinging closer and closer. It turned out to be a blessing, as thick fog descended a couple of hours later. I wouldn't have made it out of the anchorage that day otherwise. When I anchored, I was the only boat there...
given the number of people who have trouble anchoring, the rise of mooring fields makes sense... if annoying. Not saying the same person would have dealt well with a mooring ball but at least the spacing is set.
Ya just can’t fix stupid! 😎⚓️
Wow Great looking boat, I don't remember seeing it from that angle. I know you are very proud of her. Fare winds and Greetings from Galveston Texas !
The O' Kellys did a great video to help Marine-kind be more thoughtful and polite; you could share it with any douchebags you get anchoring to close (hint), maybe they can learn how to be good sailors. ruclips.net/video/c9cgczaqQPA/видео.html . You guy's are great, still amazed at how you built the mast on the boat. Hugs.
Forrest Gump. Nuff said.
Drunks?
how can anybody anchor so close to another boat? Unbelievable...
Some $'s for his boat, would have been better spent on some boating leasons.
BTW, they are know as 'PATTIES' just another terminology
I'm still waiting for that phone number for your single twin sister😉...you guys behave!!!
Don't they know how long you have been sailing? UGH!!!
In my country we have an ideom which in english would sametinget like ,,, The last idiot is still not born , and in my neigbour country , Finland , this idiom goes like this ,,, The Mothers of ideots are always pregnant !!!
Buffalos ?????
1 out of every 100 is the dumbest. Same with driving. Solution is just buy an old kawasaki stand up jet ski. 300lb of wake love!
What is it like being with your spouse 24/7?
That is the million dollar question.
Very easy answer - WONDERFUL And as an aside we have been married 53 years.
Gee, one guy has sailed around the world, or at least logged enough miles to do it several times, and the other knows how to leave the marina. Not much chance I'd listen to the power boat crew.
Like you I am steel..unlike you I would have let them rub
u go boating to get away from ppl then they’re right up on your butt!
