    Incredibly helpful thank you. I've been struggling with leggy starts but never considered too much heat as a variable. In retrospect I think that's exactly my problem. Also really enjoyed your presentation style. And finally, will attempt to control my excitement and start seedlings at a more appropriate, later start date. No promises😂

      I genuinely think it's an underrepresented problem and glad the video was useful!
      And tell you what, it requires more self-restraint than I've got to forego starting some seeds too early. I just try to make sure they aren't the tomatoes and peppers anymore ;)

      Thanks for watching Vera! Yeah, the hardening off dance is no fun is it? I've been trying to think of some way to make it easier to be honest. I think maybe a second, smaller shelf with wheels would do the trick...

      @@NextdoorHomestead if you don't have a little difference in level like I have that could do the trick. And I see the fun in it... Hopefully that is still the case this year as I'm increasing the indoor growing 😊

    • @rickytorres9089
      @rickytorres9089 Год назад +1

      Indeed you can "harden them off as you go" until you get the "safe zone" temps of 50F stable in evenings. That way once they ARE in the ground/outside they'll already be harden off without you having to actively THINK of a "hardening off phrase".

    Amazing video! Just downloaded the Photone app. Quick question-you mentioned not to go below a DLI of 15; is there a DLI value that would be considered too high for young tomato seedlings?

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  Год назад +1

      30 is generally considered the upper end of ideal but keep an eye out for damage if you're veering up to the those levels =)

  • @nadiariaskoff4543
    @nadiariaskoff4543 Год назад +1

    Great explanation - thank you 🙏
    Tip: to trick the heat-loving root system, plant tomatoes horizontally and water them with warm water late in the evening when nighttime temperatures drop. Burying the stem of the tomato plant 20-30-40 or even 50 cm (as I did) will provide aeration (tomatoes are vines - they need air ventilation for their root system) and will propagate huge roots and you will end up with tomato jungle. Sample: from a raised bed 90 cm x 200 cm, I got 100 kg + from 12 plants. My mistakes: too close, the cherry tomato popped up front row and took over the entire bed 😅This year I plant 8 tomatoes per bed. By the way: my garden is a microspace in the city center, I planted my first tomatoes last year and it was amazing to harvest 800g/per piece 🥰 I used chicken dry manure, Epsom salt, soda bicarbonate and egg shells flour. In the months with powdered mildew I spayed with 1 part milk, 5 parts water, 30 drops iodine (per 20 liters).

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  Год назад +1

      Tomato jungle sounds like my kind of space Nadia! Can't wait to hear how it goes for you this year!
      I've never thought of actively warming the soil with water on cool evenings - that's a really neat idea. Thank you for sharing =)
      And thank you for watching!

    It's 80-100 here all year (tropics). Do you think there would any benefit to starting seeds indoors? I generally only grow smaller varieties like cherry and grape tomatoes except for a short window. I'll have a question or 3 for every video. Commenting for the algorithm and cause I'm always curious :)

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  Год назад

      I really, really do. A few reasons:
      1. At those temps, your germination rate will be very poor - many seeds go into thermal dormancy above 85.
      2. You get to grow them away from potential pests and mold issues
      3. There's no reason you can't do both! I'm giving some of my toms some outdoor time right now to toughen them up a bit but they'll be mostly indoors for another 4-5 weeks.

  • @VivianfFurlow

    I tried planting my seeds earlier this year and I'm still a couple of weeks late because in Texas it will get too hot to bear fruit very soon. You are very smug but you don't know everything.

      We deal with super hot summers that crush tomato production here too - super frustrating! I hope your garden grows beautifully in spite of it =)
      I'm sorry to hear I came off as smug in this video - that's the last thing I want. We're learning (lots!) every year and just hope to make fun videos that can hopefully help a few fellow food growers out.
