  • Hey Madlads! Today (two days late, I know), I'm discussing a new strategy for foreign policy the United States may wish to pursue: an Asian NATO alliance. With the growth of China, many American allies in the region are worried they will be overrun by the Asian giant. So, what is the best course of action to deter this possibility? Find out in this video.

Yeah but it was dismantled coz of the Vietnam War. The France left coz they don't want to support the US against Vietnam and also Pakistan for having conflicts against India and the US don't want to support them. It was ended after Vietnam war but France, UK, US, Australia, Philippines and New Zealand remains partners in military exercises and great allies until today. US, UK and France still on NATO though.

You WAY overestimate Southeast-Asian countries. First of all, there is a large Chinese diaspora within Southeast Asia that has overwhelming amounts of economic influence and are significant minorities in Malaysia. It is highly likely that any geopolitical bloc to counter-China will result in heightened ethnic tensions, and also weaken the already flimsy national allegiances of the Han diaspora. We aren't called the Jews of Southeast Asia for no reason. There is also the economic ties and the failure of the US at the Scarborough shoal. For most South-East Asian countries, the plurality of trade and investment generally comes from China, though there are exceptions. This makes any alliance difficult to manage, as the economic interests of certain states clash with others. Not to mention, the US has failed to defend Filipino territory before, causing the perception of the US to be increasingly negative. No one really thinks the US will actually come to their aid. Hence why Duterte has switched strategies and instead is trying to balance China and the US to get as much out of both as possible. Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand are also dependent on rivers that originate from China, meaning its only a matter of time before resistance against China becomes suicidal. Less true for Thailand, most true for the other 3, and its partially the case for India as well. Only Indonesia would have the ability to be a true regional power much like Japan and India, and stand up to China. But the issue is that most of Southeast Asia is also ethnically diverse, compared to China's 91% Han majority(which is NOT diverse, people who say that aren't Chinese, no Han thinks being 25% Hakka makes them not Han), most of the people whom belong to the "Malay Race" don't entirely get along, and those aren't the only groups living in South East Asia, maintaining sovereignty for a state as large as Indonesia is already quite the challenge and with how diverse Malaysia and the Philippines are, our social capital is quite low. Besides that the Philippines, and Malaysia have trash militaries and everyone besides Singapore has a somewhat outdated one.
You also overestimate the effects of China's declining population. It is a problem, it will likely reduce China's ability to exert influence outwards, and it will have societal strains, but in the long run it won't cause state failure. Again China is ethnically quite homogeneous, with a high degree of social capital like most other East Asian nations. They've got a lower murder rate than the US yet US citizens are 3.6x richer....................important point for the third and final point, and ultimately they've got an average IQ of 105, way higher than that of their surrounding neighbors minus East Asian majority countries. This means that living standards will likely continue to improve and China likely will become a high income economy. The sort of collapse people predict is unlikely to happen, what will probably happen is a period of instability and uncertainty due to the low fertility rate, and a weakening of China's economic influence but overall no regional power has the demographics to actually beat China except maybe India, and even then, they suffer from a number of insurgencies, have an average IQ of like 88, and even then their birthrate has been free falling much like the rest of the world, they are at 2.22 in 2018, by 2025-2030 their birthrates will probably also fall below replacement rate and they are partially dependent on China's water and China is India's largest trade partner. They've also got Pakistan to their West, a nuclear power economically dependent on China and water that China can control(the Indus river). India will be a rival no doubt but nowhere near that of the US, whose geography makes it effectively an impenetrable fortress.
And finally, you overestimate the US. Ethnic diversity lowers social capital, and the US is RACIALLY diverse, right now Europeans are roughly 68% of the population and due to immigration and birthrates, that's only going to decrease. As that decreases, the US will see a decline in social cohesion, and a rise in social unrest. We are seeing the preludes today, BLM is not some social justice movement, it is a stridently Black Nationalist movement. The Israel Lobby dominates foreign policy in the Middle East. I could go on. The US has a murder rate higher than China and its far richer. This shouldn't be the case. And the people with higher birthrates aren't Europeans, its Blacks and Latin Americans, average IQs being 85 and 89 respectively. Sure China's ageing demography will strain society, but what the US is going through is quite frankly suicidal. And India is in somewhat of a similar situation. I don't believe China will gain global hegemony, but the US sure as hell won't be keeping it, it will inevitably have to turn inwards as national allegiance, social cohesion, and political will disintegrates. China will likely have to contend with regional rivals like India, Indonesia and Japan in its periphery, but other than that it will probably have hegemony of South, South-East, and East Asia. Russia too, Russian birthrates are tanking, in a few decades its projected that ethnic Russians will by around 50% of the Russian population, and those demographics again suggest social collapse, making Russia unable to exert influence outwards. Unless those demographic trends in Russia change, it probably won't be able to challenge China in any meaningful way.
I think either of these two things will happen, the US loses global hegemony and China gains regional hegemony, or the US loses global hegemony and China, Indonesia, Japan and India each gain a slice of Asia as their spheres of influence. I don't believe an Asian NATO would last, especially after the Scarborough shoal incident.

Indonesia is vehemently neutral in issues like this, so I doubt that my country would even consider joining an asian NATO. (Our Bebas Aktif, free and active, foreign policy is why)
It must be remembered that an asian NATO was attempted (SEATO) and my country was offered membership many times but refused because of our preference to not take sides.
Why you ask? Simply put, our sheer size, geographical position and importance is a very lucrative geopolitical win for any power looking to influence the region.
Therefore, we have concluded that, in order to prevent great power struggles in our part of the world, Indonesia must remain neutral.

The defense discussions in Sweden are changing quite a bit these days actually. There is a 50/50 split to join nato and there is a majority in parliament for a quick joining of NATO if necessary, conscription has been reintroduced, and the military budget is increasing in 4-year settlements and investments.
A lot of people regrets abandoning conscription. Sweden has never been closer to joining NATO and is in my opinion another US democratic president away, and a right wing government away (support is always larger for joining NATO when we like the current US president, that said support has been steadily increasing over the years, and opposition and neutrality on the issue decreasing.). Its pretty much a left-wing (70% against) right-wing (70% for) issue with nationalists split down the middle on whether to join. You see for indonesia, it is unlikely that we will be joining a military alliance. It is stated in our constitution that Indonesia will always be neutral and cannot be tied in any military alliances both left and right. If we, one day be joining a military alliance it means that we must change our own constitution first, and let me tell one thing.. it is not as easy as it sounds like. Try to introduce a new law here will result in almost a war zone situation, let alone to change the constitution. So it is very unlikely that indonesia will be joining said alliance. But, there is still a slight chance. A very slight chance of less than 10%.

An interesting topic you brought up, but you are missing several key factors, in order to make an Asian NATO you have to take “consequences” and “regional competition” in consideration.
First of all, if this alliance would be created there would the day after be created an Asian “Warsawapact” an pact were China, Russia, Pakistan and North Korea, maybe even Burma, would join forces, not because they necessary want that but because they have to, they are forced to join forces.
And the threat of that would mean that India are forced away because they are dependent on Russian arms industry and South Korea would be in an extreme disadvantage.
Then we have the animosity between South Korea and Japan, they working together?
And many nations you are mentioning are not even allies with USA, non are allies with other nation except Australia and New Zealand, and have no problems with China, why would Indonesia and Singapore join an alliance with their most important trade partner that they have absolutely no issues with?
The same apply to South Korea, they have no problems with China, no disputes, why create them?
Then a small note about population...
It’s the opposite of what you say, richer nations tend to give hearth to less people, most of Europe, South Korea, Japan and Australia have less fertility rate then China, USA are only a few spots above on the list.
    Are this nations crashing?
And even if this was a major problem it would only be that if China don’t do anything against it, Japan have problems because they don’t act, do you assume that the worlds without doubt most effective government wouldn’t do anything to change this during this 50 years you are talking about?
There will be no Asian NATO, it’s a pipe dream, larger risk of the opposite because the Chinese soft power are rising faster then anything in Asia, and USA, they are losing soft power in a quite high rate, it’s a dream.

India kind of not pro- US , we want to formulate our own foreign policy...
China is a common adversary of India so we tend to align with the US but we keep in check that we are not too aligned...
That's why we have a strong relationship with Russia from the times of the USSR at present to kind of neutralize too much of influence of the US and I guess its the same for Philippines ( they bought the Indo-Russian Brahmos missiles ) and Vietnam...
And still India is the largest buyer of Russian weapons even after threats of sanctions...
But India is a very valuable partner for Russia to counter China especially when they gain too much influence in central Asia which Russia doesn't like but at the same time Russia aligns with China against the west but at the risk of losing India ;the relation of India with the west and Russia kind of puts India in a "sweet spot" and Russia in a confused state....
And India have been successful in this strategy for decades and we continue to do so...

I actually disagree with the European critique. Europeans are constrained by the US and its veto power on our defense matters. the US even in 2000 admitted that they won't allow a European Union club in NATO because it would make NATO (so the US) obsolete in European defense matters. I assure you Europeans would love to have military capabilities to be able to take care of their own interests and safety but unfortunately the US has too much power over European decision-makers. as the US is moving more and more towards the Pacific, Europeans will need to realize that they are on their own in case of an emergency - unfortunately, it'll be surely too late to build those capabilities. it is what it is.
