These were probably the best small engine every made. I've had these with in excess of 5500 hours on them that were still running strong. Dripping or leaky carbs are a common issue on these but generally solved by a good cleaning and an inline fuel cut off switch.
Very nice. I have a simular engine , but with points. I have quite a bunch of those big Briggs engines that I got from a old man who builds racing lawn tractors. He pulls out the single cast iron engines and replaces them with aluminum V-twins.
That is a common direction that many take and I've made these conversions myself. Most notably, the 7117 that I pulled a cast 16 out of and installed the Vanguard in. But for my likes, I want my cast iron engines in place. Good on you for saving the Iron! Cheers! Zip~
Nice job! I was more concerned with you not giving the proper alert of 321 corn tact, instead you used contact, than I was with the rat nest. Thanks for the video Zip!
Good Engine, I was watching to see if a mouse was going to run up your arm and I would have Hollered for ya Zippo, love them engines great video see ya on the next one.
lol...It's happened Mr Mule! I've got a soft spot for them as well. Once the carburetor issues are sorted out I think this engine will make its way into the B-12. The 12hp is still running strong, but boy is it a smoker! Thanks for stopping by my Friend! Zip~
Wow the engine sure sounds strong and smooth. Just a little carb clean and it will be perfect. Thank you brother Richard Cranium. By the way are you in someone else's shop as I can actually see the floor. Hahaha. Great video. Keep them coming. Wished I had a cure for your migraines.
I tell ya Mr. C.....When I can't see the floor it drives me nuckin futs! As for the Migraines, they are few and far between fortunately. I definitely appreciate the sentiment my Friend! Cheers! Zip~

how are those old singles like that able to idle so slow ? heavy flywheel ? long stroke ? i have several 1990s kawasaki singles , 14 and 17 hp (great engines) but they don't sound nearly as good/solid as your old briggs at idle .
You nailed it on both counts Bill. It's a combination of the long stroke and HEAVY flywheel. The idle is typically set to 1,100rpm on these old cast iron engines and 3,600 on the top end. I definitely have a passion for the old Cast Iron engines and truthfully, I don't care if they're Briggs, Wisconsin's, Tecumseh's or Kohlers. They just work! Cheers buddy! Zip~
I would like to see the carb rebuild in detail with the adding of the Teflon washer. I tried an updraft rebuild recently and have not been successful yet.
That it does! That's my last OEM NOS Nelson and I just can't bring myself to mount it on anything. lol It's a Muffler! I admit.....I'm a bit out there. Cheers! Zip~
Yeah, the Bowman Mufflers. Be careful. They love to fail where the pipe is welded to the can. The reproductions were missing one key attribute that the originals had that cancelled the frequency and vibrations within the muffler so as a result, they literally vibrate them selves into two pieces. Check my older videos. Just search Muffler and you'll find where I show why this happens on the reproductions. Cheers! Zip~
I have a 12 horse on my 1069 MTD that I'm converting to electronic ignition. Just waiting for the mailman to bring my coil. Jan 5 is my birthday but I was born in 1990. I would love to swap mine to a 16 horse someday.
The coil showed up last week. It runs smoother than it ever has since I've owned it. I also was able to rewire it and get it charging. Now I just have to wait for mowing season.
