I have the exact same motherboard with a Pentium III 500Mhz processor. I have fitted a Voodoo 3 3000 graphics card and an Awe 32 sound card. I am running Windows 98. Bearing in mind the age of the motherboard it runs totally stable. A real testament to the build quality of ASUS boards

I remember that case, probably had a 100 at least at my high school... In 2007. Ranged from celeron 433s to p3 933 systems. We had a few HT P4s by the end of 06 as well. But most were the older systems. I remember our tech class only had 6 working systems... I built another 10 out of spare parts in the classroom closet lol. Ranged from p2 333 to k6s 400mhz. All were a bit slow but capable for classroom needs at the time. Oh and I kept a copy of starcraft spawned version on the media center file server... I could play starcraft just by accessing a network shortcut icon I kept on a floppy from ANY computer. Good times :)

I have that very same Aopen case, built like a tank. It has a PC in it to this day. Loved Aopen cases back in the day

Great video and system, nice narration with a lot of info. Really nice video card, banshee is sweet being able to do it all in one card. I love the awe 64, it's really a good all around card, it's got decent midi and opl3 emulation is pretty good. Also, lovely beige case! Really clean, great job dude, off to a great start! 👍👍

Hey pal! Great to see this video! What a pleasure to watch. Did you rent a "clean room" for the filming? 😂
You can't go wrong with an ASUS board and cool slotket. Your call. I know which one you will go with. Let's see if I am right. I have the same Ensoniq Banshee card and didn't think to use it, but did use my Voodoo2 so, that's a wash. Go build it out already!

My machine back then was a Socket 370 700MHz Pentium 3 running in a slot 1 board. Loved that machine, although I was always jealous of my Uncles Slot 1 version, I always thought those CPU slot carts were really cool hahaha.

"Doesn't have any on-board sound, which is great 'cos I don't have to worry about disabling it". OOF! And also true. 🤣 That P2B combined with the 300A is an absolutely classic combination for the time, so I'm really happy to see someone including them. It's a real shame the Celeron name is now so derided, when you consider its beginnings (e.g. Tualatin version). This video is a complete tease, by the way. Looking forward seeing it in action!

I have an old MSI board that I couldn't disable the onboard audio on. It caused so many headaches until I managed to modify the BIOS. Always appreciate a good board without any audio on it now! So true about the Celeron name. I owned so many socket 370 celerons back in the day. I don't think I ever owned a P2/P3 during that era - only celerons. They were really awesome chips.

I absolutely love the Voodoo Banshee! As you say, it’s terribly underrated.
I had a pair of Creative Banshees back in the day and I highly regret selling them (probably for a pittance) now it’s on my ever expanding retro-wishlist.

The Celery 300A overclock to 450MHz was a VERY noticeable bump back in the day. I had the slot form factor Celeron 300A in my system, seated in an ABit BX6 2.0 motherboard.

This is such a fantastic video, and I really can't wait for the build! Thanks for sharing this one Mike. A few thoughts: I really, really appreciate your take on the Banshee. I think you are so right; it is an underrated card, and has some really nice 2D features and the 3D performance is perfect on a system like this. The choice to go Slotket is fantastic, and I appreciate the uniqueness in that aspect. The performance uplift is going to really show, especially with that Banshee. I love that you're using a mechanical drive; to be honest, the only thing that keeps me from doing so is the ease of transferring data to SD/CF cards, but mechanical drives are doing it "right," not that there's a wrong way haha. The AWE64 is also a fantastic pick; it's perfect for the era, and an all-around sweet card. I love the case too! Honestly, man, this is just such a perfect 1998 era build! Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much, Will! It's been a lot of fun putting it together. I'm really looking forward to getting some games going on it! I don't usually use mechanical drives either - mainly because the acoustics get pretty awful with age - but I figured in something attempting to be period correct, it would be a good choice. At least I can use the 10/100 card in it to FTP files over. Thanks again for the feedback! I'm pretty new to doing this type of video and have a lot to learn :)

i had a 440bx and a ordered a 400mhz p2. It was the fastest I could order at the time and the next month the magazines showed the 450mhz coming out.. ugh.. lol.. The machine had a 8.4g bigfoot hdd, 256sram, cdr optical drive, sportster 56k modem, ati aiw pro 8m card and a awe64gold sound card. I just sold that machine 2 years ago. I remember watching it defrag and thought wow that is fast. good times.

Specs of my Ultimate 1999 Gaming PC that I just recently got up and running of which most if not all of the parts are from 1999. I even have not just a LITE ON 52x CD-RW Drive installed but also a Creative PC-DVD ROM Dxr2 installed. I even have a HP CD Writer Plus 8200e External USB CD-RW Drive plugged into the system. Looks simillar to the HP CD Writter 9200 Plus that was on my dad’s AMD K6-2 build which was clocked at 450 Mhz with a ATI 3D Rage 128.
    Motherboard: Abit BE6-II Revision 1.0
Processor: Intel Pentium III clocked at 650 Mhz (Originally I wanted to either go with a Pentium 3 clocked at 550 Mhz in order to have something that was close to what I had with a Dell Optiplex GX1 or a Pentium 2 clocked at 266 Mhz so that I could slow the system down significantly)
    RAM: 256 MB
Hard Drive (had): 60 GB QUANTUM FIREBALL PLUS AS (Extremely loud)
Video Card: 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 (AGP Varient)
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Value CT4520 (Used this in a Gateway Essential ESS 450 SE from 2015 to 2017 that I used to have and even though I have Yamaha OPL3-SA as well as ESS AudioDrive this card being the only Sound Blaster 16 compliant card around makes it a really good choice)
Network Interface Card (NIC): Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Version 2.0 (I use this primarily for playing online video games)
Re-enabled the HighPoint (LowPoint) HPT 366 Ultra DMA 66 controller that is onboard and hooked up a 2 TB Western Digital hard drive as the replacement for the Quantum drive. I am using a StarTech IDE to SATA Hard Drive or Optical Drive Adapter Converter that was not playing nice with the Intel i440BX chipset. I recommend at least a minimum of Ultra66 in order for this adapter to work properly. I used the Highpoint drivers on the Abit BX-1.67M Motherboard CD.
Instead of using the Highpoint UDMA66 controller instead best thing to do is install a UDMA100 IDE controller such as the Promise FastTrack TX2000 or even a SCSI controller card like this Adaptec AHA-2940UW. This particular SCSI card does 50-Pin as well as 68-Pin SCSI. Just remember to not use that fourth PCI slot.

Fun fact, the Pentium II processor is a Pentium Pro (Socket 8) CPU with MMX. Socket 8 processors had a L2 cache on the CPU running at the full clock speed. This caused alot of Issues for Intel, as the L2 cache and CPU had to be bonded together before they could be tested, if the cache or the CPU was defective it rendered the entire product dead. To Combat this, the Pentium II adapted the L2 cache interface into what was called the Backside bus. This allowed Intel to put SRAM chips in the cartridge. These cache chips would either run at 1/2 or 2/3 of the CPU clock, depending on the CPU clock speed. These cache chips usually where the reason that Pentium II processors would fail at overclocking, if the cache chips were on a bad bin they'd end up stalling out and crashing the system.

      @mtunayucer 3 месяца назад

in case of Slot1 l2 cache always runs at 1/2 of cpu clockspeed, 3/5 and 1/3 dividers were only a thing on amd slot A cpus.
