UPDATE: Just played through to level 30 on Gauntlet and I can now confirm that the game does break at that point.
Here is footage I recorded of it happening: twitter.com/RerezTV/status/1057403038124584960
I talked about the ROM being modified in the video and this seems to be what must have broke the game. Gauntlet has 100 levels but it would appear that you won't be able to get passed 30 if you play.

    • @SignalBlue
      @SignalBlue 5 лет назад +14

That's regretful. The 1 arcade machine I want is the Rampage one, but not if it breaks at level 30 for Gauntlet. $299 for 2/3 working games is a bit steep.

      UPDATE :
Hey @Rerez, just wanted to let you know the Gauntlet 'fixed' PCB still isn't working:
On November 24, 2018, Username : 128kgames, reported this on atariage forums:
      Posted Sat Nov 24, 2018 9:39 PM
      Gauntlet NOT fixed:
Installed the replacement Rampage cab PCB that is supposed to fix the level 16/31 and various sound issues. While I can confirm they fixed the level issue (I played to level 33 - my cab froze on level 16) and the sound issue for the Warrior and the Valkyrie, they have also BROKEN the sound for the Elf and the Wizard in the exact same way the Warrior and Valkyrie sound was broken on the original PCB (no sounds for insert coin, picking up treasure or food, no sound on exiting the dungeon).
So while a major issue was fixed, they simply shifted an annoying issue to another set of characters.
I would appreciate it if anyone else with the Rampage cab who has replaced the PCB can confirm the same sound issues so I know its not just me.
If 1Up has in fact fixed one issue and caused another, I have to seriously question whoever the hell they have play testing these "fixes" and seriously volunteer to do it for them.

Ok. I just finished checking out the set of problems you listed for Gauntlet. Sadly the information is correct. It is now a mixed bag in the sound department. The elf has the worst sound of all the characters. The elf has no exit music nor food or keys. Player 2 has no insert coin sound as well. The warrior and the Valkyrie sound better, but they both have no sound for food or treasure pick up. The wizard has no sound for food or treasure. These new problems are getting to be a bit much. I still really like my cabinets and all,but arcade1up really needs to get things right. The game runs alot smoother and the sound is better than before. I guess I don't know what else to say about it. It's almost like the sound was perfect when I first installed and played the new game board.

WRONG. No Rom modding needed. The cab is running Mame, which fully supports high score saving with the simple addition of a dat file. I appreciate your IT-Crowd user name, I bemoan your lack of knowledge.

    • @negative1723
      @negative1723 5 лет назад

@@andy6576 Nice try. 2 months later you find out MAME is in there, and you're still wrong.
Unless the script they used supports the high score save, it won't work.
Go do your homework, the next time you try to comment about something you don't understand.
The restricted MAME they are using didn't account for highscores, and basically they are reverting to a savestate when the user goes back to the menu for some games.
Otherwise, they just revert to a previous state without saving the high score.
I wish people like you could understand what MAME is, and how it actually works,
without all you guesswork, and haphazard logic.
Most original games couldn't write the highscores to be saved, which is why they
weren't saved when unplugged in the original games, hence high score save game kits now.

I really wish MyArcade would put out a tabletop version of Rampage. Considering that they have a perfectly accurate Street Fighter one that is just like the big one, then there is no reason for not putting out a Rampage unit. I'd love to have one of those and not spend hundreds of dollars on something like this. As for the "Defender" joystick issue, I'm surprised the makers of the cabinet did not have the two controller just switch to being off during that gameplay.

I keep going back and forth on this. I want Street Fighter and Rampage...and then I find something I don't like and just like that I'm back to a wait and see mode. My biggest gripe is that none of these machines will allow you to change the dip switches (from numerous sources). That's a very big downer for me; However, I am a tinkerer (if it exists, I will find a way...I will solder a board if I have too) and after seeing this video, I am planning on buying two of these beautiful cabinets tomorrow or the next day. I am also a little troubled that some people are reporting crashes and game breaking glitches in Gauntlet. These glitches supposedly appear in or just after stage 30 of the game.
At any rate thank you for giving an honest review on these machines. My fiance and I are huge gamers that are currently building a home arcade as I type this and these machines/risers match exactly what I am going for. I plan to set these up next to an MVS cab and an AES machine for a true arcade feel. We even have a sweet Bose sound system running through the room and lights (neon, lasers, and crystal ball) for that 1980's-1990's arcade vibe.

You forgot to mention the added complexity that the Player 3 joystick adds while trying to hit the center buttons while playing Defender. It definitely throws a wrench into the "swipe your hand across the control layout to hit Hyperspace" strategy... At least that's what I used to do on the original arcade machine.
That being said, I think that Arcade 1up could have capitalized a bit by offering alternate control panels separately with layouts that reproduce specific games. In this case, given that it appears to be fastened from the top, an optional Defender control panel would have worked wonders... On the other hand, I don't know how many people would put up with having to store an extra control panel somewhere while it's not being used.

Left makes you go left and right makes you go right in the Atari 2600 version. (I think there's a reverse scheme where right makes you go left and vice versa) It has to, there's simply no more buttons to play Defender with. The only way they could have done this otherwise was to include a custom controller with the game, something nobody was willing to do at the time.

I got to agree. It’s one of the few times I’d say the Atari 2600 was better. Playing at the arcade was too damn awkward with the controls. Same can be said of Asteroids.

I'm thinking about buying this machine specifically for gauntlet. Rampage is a big plus and the other two games will just kinda be there for me. But if gauntlets having these issues I'm not gonna buy it. I heard you can get a new board or something like that for gauntlet? Can someone fill me in on that?

A-1up gets considerable amount of complaints.Lets give credit were credit were credit is due.The game emulations give you that Arcade feel. The Look of the cabinets beautiful.Yeah I know the screw holes but with a sharpie pen and a little bit of patience problem solved. The plastic on the screen use an exact I knife on one upper corners of the screen slowly peel. The price yeah I know..But you're getting 10games remember buying cartridges in the 80s and consider you can buy a party cade for 250.00.Its a wonderful time to be a retro gamer peace to all and happy new year 😂

I am disappointed that they used the Rampage cabinet art instead of the Defender cabinet art as the later was far superior especially the multibutton control panel.

In the pac-man cabinet (the only one i own) the word NAMCO is replaced with BNEI which tells me that, just like the gauntlet game shown here, it was modified/pirated.

I really don't care for the rampage artwork at all or the game. I would have gone with joust artwork, defender, or gauntlet. You can find websites to order arcade 1up sized stickers and marques though.
I think gauntlet does not go past lvl 30, but who's going to sit there that long anyway.
    Well presented video and information.
They could have put to robotron on here too or stargate. Even berserk. Or a golden axe arcade collection.
    Defender sounds fun.
Yes a control button mode would be nice or cheat menu.
I agree it's close enough to arcades. Easy to build and take up less space. I build a shelf for mine to make them even higher than the riser.

How did they miss the part of not being able to record high scores? I thought that would be a given for such arcade machines. I am super interested in getting one of these Arcade 1 Up cabinets but these lil things here & there really bothers me. -_-
