It takes a special kind of person to be a criminal defense attorney. I have had occasion to sit at defense counsel's table at criminal trials, and decided that it was not for me.
Understand that the attorney has the duty to zealously assert his/her client's interests, and so, a criminal defense attorney needs to grab at whichever straws are available, even for the most evil client.
Understand also that the criminal defense attorney's job is vital to the legal system; although the accused is technically the client, the criminal defense counsel is actually defending the United States (and here, the New York State) Constitution, making sure that the prosecution dots all the i's, crosses all the t's, jumps through all of the hoops, skates around all of the barrels, doesn't cross the line of scrimmage before the ball is hiked, and honors all of the accused's Constitutional rights.
If not for the criminal defense attorney, prosecutors will get out of hand and imperil society's freedoms (Can you say "Alvin Bragg" or "Fani Willis" or "Jack Smith" or "Kenneth Starr?").
