- In 1935 the need for a fast bomber or schnellbomber was sought by the Luftwaffe. Junkers would step in with the Ju 88. This amazingly versatile aircraft would reach speeds of up to 360 miles or 580 kilometres an hour, incredible for a bomber. Some 15,000 would be manufactured during the war, which is more than all the other German bombers of the war combined. In today's video, we look at the Junker Ju 88 as one of the German fast bombers of WWII.

actually the dive automatic wasnt novel. not even for junkers planes because the same mechanism also apears in the JU87 dive bombers.

Finnish Air Force used Ju88 during WW2 and according to the pilots memoirs it was very liked among them: fast, easy to fly and deadly accurate in dive bombing missions.
Yes I believe so, the aircraft being easy to fly meant the crew could concentrate on their mission and get the job done
To be fair, all aircraft became deadly when the Finns were using it, from the biplanes, Buffalo, G.50 Freccia to Fokker monoplanes.

Yes, it was the best german bomber of the war, and i could have been even better, had the RLM not isued their stupid order that all planes should be able to do divebombing. Had they only build 1 variant for divebombing, the rest would have been lighter, faster and more nimble. This order hampered the development of the ME 177 as well. The recovery from divebombing system was used in the JU 87 as well.

Very interesting, thanks ! My grandfather was pilot instructor in WW2, he passed away in 1982. But I remember, that the JU88 was his favorite plane; he flew almost all types of planes of this era, as I have his flightbook and pilot licence by me...
I had an uncle, Captain Helmuth Radatz, who flew the JU 88 night fighter. Back in the 80's when I was a kid collecting model plane kits, I met him for the first time. I was in awe of this guy. 'You really flew the 109 and the JU 88'? WOW! He told me some amazing things about shooting down bombers. He showed me photos of his plane. I think they bolted a couple of 30mm cannons to her ,from memory. Wish I'd got to know him better. He passed away in Finland in about '88.

The Ju88 A-4 was developed to learn the lessons of the Battle of Britain, and was produced in vast numbers, being the commonest variant by far. It had an increased wingspan and revised defensive armament - 2 (later 4) machine-guns in the rear cockpit, one gun in the transparent nose, and the ventral gun was often the MG 81Z (2x MG 81 bolted together).
Virtually ALL Ju 88 As carried dive brakes, and the speed of 360mph was achieved only by some night-fighters with special boost - not generally fitted to bombers. The vast majority of bomber versions were derived from the A-4.
The Ju88D was produced in parallel with the A, but in much smaller numbers.
The Ju88 C was a heavy fighter, while the R was a night fighter (replaced by the G with a Ju 188 tail).
the Ju88B and -E were developments with a new cockpit that led to the Ju 188.
The Ju88S was a high speed bomber, only a handful of which were produced.
I think you should watch a couple of videos (and, more importantly, check some reference sources) before trying to present one.
Very well said. The Luftwaffe pilots actually dreaded the JU 88A-1. It suffered disastrous losses; more than He111 and Do 17 combined. There were no A-2 and A-3 AFAIK. But the A-4 had the errors from the A-1 corrected, and became the backbone of the Luftwaffe. The vid is still good, though, and lots of nice footage.
Definitely one of the finest bombers of either side...
This and the British DH Mosquito must be the 2 most versatile aircraft of the whole war. Can't think of any other contender.
I didn't know about the smoke generator so i have learnt something new about one of my fave aircraft. Never seen footage of the Mistel combo in flight before either. Thanks :)

@@judgejimbobrowntown3214nah not really. P-38 was just mostly a day fighter and ground attack aircraft, it did have many other roles like level bomber and night fighter, but they were of very limited use.
I honestly didn’t know the JU 88 was so versatile, & effective, (I heard that during the BoB, many Luftwaffe pilots were superstitiously afraid of flying it, due to so many of them getting shot down, but that it excelled over Soviet Russia, diluting any ‘spooky’ reputation)…That trick of sending oil to the engine, to make it smoke, whilst diving, in order to trick the hostile fighters into falsely thinking they’ve succeeded in making a kill, is brilliant…(I’ll have to remember this one)…

A very good plane The Ju 88 was very underated. Very versatile aircraft. I fly RC airplanes. I wish the big rc brands like eFlight or FMS would make a 55" or larger EPO foam model.

An interesting aspect of the Ju-88 is the Germans built a truly massive production line for it in 1938. This committed them to the plane, and in a way to starting the war.
Some substantial mistakes here.
C was the heavy fighter/Zerstörer as well as the initial nightfighter version; R was an improved C nightfighter, G was a pure nightfighter, H was a long range nightfighter.
The torpedo bomber was the A-17.
Besides these errors, you left out the S, which was truly a fast bomber.

A very versatile aircraft, pity that RLM's obsession with dive bombing add useless weight to the hull, probabilly a two men crew would've been more apt, as with the Mosquito, given that the defensive armament was pratically useless.
The JU-88 as a driver bomber is a new one for me. It's unremarkable utilitarian visage belies it's functionality and performance. As a kid reading my WWII airwar books(pre-internment), I always ignored the JU-88 and thought of it as uninteresting. As it turns out there's a lot to appreciate about the JU-88.
After 1942 the Lotfe 7 computing bomb-sight and the StuVi 5B shallow dive bombing sight mean that the dive brakes were no longer needed and they were removed. These sights were very accurate. It added a lot of extra speed.
It was so fast that the Luftwaffe used the Ju 88 even as a nightfighter very successfully. In this role it was even better than the BF 110.

The Germans fitted some bombers with flame throwers intended to toast attacking fighters. These worked fine on the ground where there was sufficient oxygen for combustion. When tried at normal combat heights there wasn't enough oxygen and the result was a stream of smoke. Whilst this didn't have the toasting effect on the fighters it did put them off as they thought that the bomber was already doomed.

This channel reminds me of watching Wings of the Luftwaffa on Discovery Channel growing up in the 1990s.
I used to watch that excellent series too, and have most episodes on VHS cassette tape.

360 mph? All research I vid find puts the JU 88 at a top speed of about 300 mph.
The Ju-88A series(bomber) was around 300 mph im pretty sure. The Ju-88C series ( night fighter) was around 350-370 mph if memory serves. Keep in mind when carrying a full bomb load that's alot more drag than 4 or 6 20/30mm cannons. Not sure what the radra weighted but it definitely wasn't the same as a 8,000 # bomb load.

That could have been the stripped down prototype. As usual when they went into production and got loaded up as well the "test" speeds went way down. OTOH another reply mentions the night fighter variant. That could be it too. I'd have to look it up in my books. (not at hand right now)
I agree , I think he is misinformed 296 mph is the usual, although Roald Dahl in a Hurricane MK1 found them hard to catch up on ,he shot down 6 in the defense of Athens, his top speed was given 324mph but average top speed at 306mph sounds right.
Ju 88V5 prototype managed 360mph for a short dash but the weight and equipment additions such as dive brakes etc and the dive bombing requirement meant the speed dropped to about 295 mph for the Ju 88A1. It dropped further for the bigger heavier Ju 88A5 due to a wing area increase but when the more powerfull engines came in the Ju 188A5 got back up to 292 mph. From 1942 the dive brakes were no longer needed due to the Lotfe 7 and StuVi 5B bomb sights and they were removed. This I think allowed a speed of around 306mph with 4 x 250kg bombs. Maybe 316 mph without bomb shackles. (The Ju 88 did have an internal bomb bay but they were usually used to carry fuel as the bombs were usually 50kg or max 70kg)
The Ju 88S-0 had more powerful BMW 801 engines and managed 332 mph but the main S version had a new streamlined nose and canopy as well as having the ventral bombola deleted was the Ju 88S-1 with a speed of 378mph.
I would say that the allied equivalent would be the Bristol Beaufighter, in performance, versatility and armament.
The allied equivalent was the de-Havilland Mosquito. It was used as a low- to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike, and photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation as a fast transport to and from neutral countries through enemy-controlled airspace.
The Beaufighter was a heavy fighter, strike aircraft and torpedo bomber. It didn't have a bomb bay .It was also much slower than the Mosquito by nearly 100mph.
Despite all this, the Beaufighter is still my favourite Allied WW2 aircraft !
I am surprised that no one has taken the Ju88 as a Lazarus project; such a handy, fast aircraft. They have done that for the Me262. It is a simpler project, surely, than the 262?

6:45 this isn't a Ju 88. It's a Heinkel He 115 which is an interesting plane in its own right, but it is not as the video claims, a Ju 88 S. 6:03 this isn't a gunner position from a Ju 88. I think this is likely the front gunner in a He 111.
It's a bit deceptive to claim that the Ju 88 was capable of 360 MPH, and then later briefly mention that this was only in a dive. Aircraft top speeds are generally quoted for the top speed in level flight. If the 88 was capable of this speed in level flight it would have been difficult to intercept, but it wasn't.
Those nitpicks aside, I agree that the Ju 88 was a very versatile plane, and was quite manouverable. There are accounts of them being able to turn with fighters and give them a runf or their money. This video doesn't cover it, but I love the look of the Ju 188, with its electrically operated cannon top turret.
My opinion is that it was a utility aircraft, but that it was not fast enough and it was overmanned.

The top speed you give is daft, it never exceeded 300mph.

There was no battleship "Oran", the ju88 was not flying at 360 mph, at least not in level flight, only in a dive. So not great on research but otherwise a decent video.
Reconaissance versions later in the war achived this speed in level flight at high altitute

The B-17 actually had a light bomb load. It carried lots of defences and intended to put its bombs close to the target.
Lots of planes look good compared to the B-17 in this way.
Designed by an American I think. He did a fine job.
german made a couple huge mistakes, their fighters were too short range, and they had no heavy long range bombers, But the big mistake was attackign russia before they finished England

I don't think so. But it did have a good payload. Impressive for a 2 engined bomber.

The JU88 had a top speed of 280mph or so. Depending on the model. Not 360! It had a max bomb load of around 2,200 lbs. Not 8000!Please check your info before publishing. It makes you look bad. The JU88 could not outrun some fighters. Maybe a biplane or I16. Maybe. It was a great aircraft. But not in the same league as the Mosquito. The dive bombing attributes made to the design were instigated by Goering during development. The main spar was heavier and degraded the performance. The diving brakes created drag when not deployed. No bomb bay. All bombs were suspended on 4 hardpoints on the belly. More drag. It could have been even better in its other roles without those mods. It was lightly armed, no doubt. But in very similar fashion to its contemporaries like the DO17 and HE111. The DO17 was a bit faster. During the battle of Britain DO17's would drop their bombs and turn back home in a slight dive with the throttles to the wall. It made it more difficult for the Hurricanes and Spitfires to catch up before the "flying pencils" got over water low and fast to escape. They could do that. The JU88's and HE111's had to fight it out on the way back. Great aircraft. But no Mosquito (400mph+) or Beaufighter (360+).

The Ju 88V5 prototype managed 330mph but it was a record aircraft.
The Ju 88A1 managed 295mph with dive brakes and bomb racks. It was slower with external bombs (about 270mph). It was still faster than the radial engine Dornier Do 217Z. (Only the Do 215 was faster).
The Ju 881A2, A3 were minor models of no consequence.
The Ju 88A5 was next because the $1450hp Jumo 211J were not ready. It featured an enlarged wing. With the Jumo 1200hp 211B/C engine the Ju 88A5 managed 286mph,
The Ju 88A4 with the Jumo 211F (1350hp) or Jumo 211J (1450hp) could manage 295mph. If the dive brakes were removed speed would get to 305mph.
These aircraft could carry over 5500lbs of bombs. 4 x 500kg bombs or 2 x 1000kg bombs under the wing racks and about 1100 internally. The internal bomb bays could carry 1760kg made up of 50kg or 70kg bombs. The internal bays were normally used for fuel tanks.
With bomb racks removed speed was close to 315mph (about the speed of the Ju 88C4 fighter variant of the Ju 88A4)
-Ju 88S-0 with BMW801 engines could manage 330mph.
-Ju 88S-1 with the ventral bondolar removed could do nearly 372mph. With GM-1 about 374mph but at higher altitude.
-Ju 88G-6 heavy fighters could do 360mph with aerials.
