Yep. I noticed every urgent care location. Has the chinese arm size cuffs. Squeezes the crud out of your arm. Pretty sure your arm isnt supposed to be numb from a blood pressure cuff. If it was done manually with the proper cuff size. They are amazed at my blood pressure and often times get confused. I smile and say. Must be a chinese problem.
I tell the nurse to use a bigger cuff but they don't listen and ever time the cuff ends up popping open and they try to hold the cuff closed while taking my pressure upsetting me and causing my BP readings to be much higher. It's so difficult to find extra large cuffs without having to break the bank. Up to 17" is a little too small, I need at least a cuff that's up to 20". Thanks for posting.
You're welcome: They should do a better job measuring your BP. One of these monitors has 21.25" and the other 23": bloodpressureexplained.com/home-blood-pressure-monitors-for-large-arms/
I was on the fence about the lifesource UA-789AC until I saw your video. I have 19" arms that seem to fall in that "gray" area of just a tad too big for 99.9999% of the cuffs/monitors out there. Then I stumble on the lifesource, do my due diligence, but was still still teetering on the fence. It had great reviews, but wasn't a "brand name". And by "brand name", any medical name I could relate to, like Bayer, Band-Aid, Eli Lily, Planned Parenthood, Gold Bond, Blue Cross, Dr. Scholl's, Bactine, Massengill... in other words, I had no idea, but A&D wasn't working. So, off to RUclips University I go. Your brief video assuaged my fears just enough to put me over the fence. Well, that and the stock photos of the speeding bullet train and scientists in white lab coats doing science stuff on A&D's website. I even used your "affiliate's" link. Sincerely, Rusty
Hi there. Wondering if you can help. My readings fluctuate a lot. From 120/70 to 160/100 . I give myself at least 5 mins to rest and do slow breathing. From what I’ve read i think possibly it’s because my arms are cone shaped. My proximal arm measurement (just below shoulder) is around 13.5 inches and my distal (2cm from elbow) is around 11inches Middle is just over 13.5 inches. These measurements are taken with arm slightly bent and relaxed as though I was wearing the cuff These measurements mean my cuff is tight at the top but I can slip 4 fingers underneath near the front of elbow so when it inflates the pressure is uneven. I have a cuff that is supposed to fit 8 inches to 16.5 inches. Is this a problem you’ve come across? I’ve booked in to see my doctor just to check things out. Appreciate your advice. Thanks!
It's possible. I would wait and see what the physician's office says when they can check you in person. ADC makes a cuff for cone shaped arms but its larger. You can read about it here. bloodpressureexplained.com/sizes-of-extra-large-blood-pressure-cuffs/ This article has a section about conical shaped arms. bloodpressureexplained.com/obese-arms-and-blood-pressure/ Keep me updated and let me know what the doctor says.
Appreciate your help! Annoyingly I’ve got a phone call with doctor first on 7th Feb so will be a while. I had a private medical on Friday and my bp was 140/92 but I was very anxious. Also I was sat but was talking and listening to the nurse and didn’t get a chance to just sit and breathe for 5 mins. Was worrying about it all day as my bp has been so up and down. Also I’ve been taking my readings a lot which has increased my anxiety. I’ve decided to leave it until I see a doctor. I’m 37, below 15 percent body fat, fittest and leanest I’ve ever been, dont smoke, cut down on processed foods, alcohol and salt and practise mediation regularly. The medical took my blood for a variety of tests and did an ECG so that should give me a good insight to whether my bp is a concern or where it’s white coat syndrome shouldn’t it? Thanks
@@bloodpressureexplained4609 Thanks for checking up! I had blood tests taken privately and cholesterol and plaque levels were very good. Also my body fat percentage is hovering 15 percent and I’m 37. I monitored my bp for a week twice a day before speaking to gp. I did it lying down with a pillow as my readings were much more consistent. I think when I’m seated and my arms bent it was affecting the machines accuracy as I would often get errors too. Probably due to the shape of my arm. I was average systolic 120s 130s and diastolic 80s. The gp agreed my cuff might not be ideal but was happy taking all factors into account. She said self monitor again for a week in 6 months.
Nice to hear the fluctuations weren't due to a medical issue. Sounds like you're doing a great job taking care of yourself and monitoring. Keep up the great work! Have a good day.
I have with the Welch Allyn 1700 and i have thick short arms 17 inch , the problem i have with the large cuff it goes 3 inches past my elbow its too long .
Frank, measure how many inches your upper arm is from the bottom of your shoulder down to the elbow and let me know. I'll try locating a cuff that will fit the length of your upper arm. Kevin
Hi Salim. Excellent question! If your arm measurement falls into the size range of two different cuffs, the standard and the extra large. Either size cuff is okay for you to use. When this situation arises, Welch Allyn states the larger size cuff is the ideal option but not necessary. bloodpressureexplained.com/welch-allyn-home-blood-pressure-cuff-sizes/
If used correctly, cuff height, body position and following all the guidelines, I've found the good quality ones made by reputable companies accurate. bloodpressureexplained.com/the-most-accurate-blood-pressure-monitor-for-home-use/
Have you found a cuff that fits? If not, measure how many inches your upper arm is from the bottom of your shoulder down to the elbow and let me know. I'll try locating a cuff that will fit your short bicep. Kevin
Hi, sorry for delayed response. The answer is not the same for all monitors, but for the Lifesource model the cuffs can be switched. Check out my article on it here, the Lifesource is the 2nd monitor in the article: bloodpressureexplained.com/home-blood-pressure-monitors-for-large-arms/
I have muscular arms (14.5 inches around to be exact) and my standard Omron cuff (7-19in) fits but I can't put it on too tight or else it'll give me ridiculously high readings. Do I need a larger cuff?? I've read somewhere that since muscular arms are not cylindrical, that you need a conical shaped cuff to get an accurate reading. Any truth to this?
Hi Jess, first of all congrats on your muscular arm. I know it takes much hard work and dedication! 1 -What is the size range of your cuff? 2 -Does it have a size range indicator which can be checked when it is secured? Typically a cuff will have this to check for proper fit after securing it around your arm. 3 -Typically the conical shape is for a more extreme arm size. Does your cuff have any areas of empty space between the cuff and the arm once it is secured? If not then a conical shape is probably not a problem for you. If you need a larger size, this article I wrote lists every Omron monitor, the size cuffs they come with and which cuffs are compatible with that monitor: bloodpressureexplained.com/omron-home-blood-pressure-cuff-sizes/
@@bloodpressureexplained4609 Hey, thanks for your reply! I just reddited my original comment while you were probably sending yours (lol) but I'll reply here as well. I have the BP710N model with the standard cuff that fits between 9 and 17 inch arms. My arm measures exactly 14.5 inches and yes, there is lots of space between the edge of the cuff that is near my elbow. This is likely due to the dramatic curve of my bicep. I can't seem to get a smooth cover of my upper arm due to this curvature. The biggest part of my upper though is my triceps because it's the only part of my body that I still go heavy with at my old age now, lol. Would the Welch Allyn monitor be a good fit for me? I'm looking for either a good cuff for my old Omron monitor or a new monitor with a cuff that will ACCURATELY read my BP. Thank you for your kind words! It's been 23 long years of training but all well worth it.
Even though I love Welch Allyn, I don't think going with a larger cuff from them will solve your problem. It seems you already have a properly sized cuff. ADC (American Diagnostic Corporation) makes a conical shaped cuff which is narrower at the bottom than the top. The cuff is curved. It seems like you need a cuff similar to that one. The only problem though it's made for arms 17.32-25.98" and it's made for use with a stethoscope not a machine. You can check it out here in one of my articles: bloodpressureexplained.com/sizes-of-extra-large-blood-pressure-cuffs/ That cuff is too large for you though. It's the only conical shaped cuff I can find, today and when I wrote that article. I would suggest calling them on Monday and asking them if they have a cuff for your arm or if they can guide you to the proper place. 1-800- ADC-2670. I would also call Welch Allyn (aka Hillrom) 1-800-856-4605. I'm sorry I wasn't able to locate a cuff for your needs. Let me know what ADC says. It's quite frustrating, even for me. As you say, ACCURACY is important.

Thanks for the info on these monitors. One of the biggest mistakes people do is using a cuff too small for their arms which gives a higher reading!
You're welcome and thanks for sharing!

I've been wanting to get a new monitor because the cuff is too small. Thanks for posting this video!
You're welcome. If the cuff is too small your readings are probably falsely higher.
Nice video. Thanks for educating us on the different size cuffs.
My pleasure!
The 1700 is awesome.
I agree and have been using it for over 3 years now.
2:04, only supports one user, for the 1700 series. Does this mean that I can only take one reading (Or 3) for myself?
You can take as many readings as you want

if my arm size is 42cm then shud i use a bigger cuff or just stick to the standrd ones? tq
