Journey is such a beautiful game with a lot of deeper meanings. The mountain gives off life energy in the form of those runes/symbols that you see on the characters scarf and the glowing things you pick up to increase the scarf length.
At some point this energy manifests into life and the white beings came into being. They started out as simple farmers but learned to harness the scarf life force and built a great civilization. Eventually the energy started to fade and the white beings fought over it. They built those mechanical dragon like things to harvest scarf energy and went to war. In the end they destroyed themselves and their civilization.
Overtime it seems like they evolved into the red beings like your character and wanted to restore the energy to the land which had now become a desert. So each one starts on a pilgrimage to get to the top of the mountain. Unfortunately it's a long trek and most don't make it; all those stone markers you find are actually gravestones where someone else died. However, each individual seems to make it further than the last hence why our character makes it past the last grave marker before falling.
What exactly happens after you fall on the mountain is up to debate; I personally think the character dies and the last sequence takes place in the afterlife. The top of the mountain may not be possible to reach in one lifetime and with that you start to see the deeper meaning behind the game.
The character's journey to the mountain top mirrors life itself. However you never reach it so it was never about the mountain; instead it was all about the journey and the experiences you had along the way. That other person you met actually was another player; in fact, the game will match you up with other players playing through at the same time. These people may come and go and are on their own journey; some will be with you through the whole game, others only passing by.
If the player reaches the mountain in the afterlife then it explains the shooting star; it's signaling the end of a journey as one character crosses over while a whole new adventure is just about to start.

Kudos to ThatGameCompany (the devs), they made games with heart. The multi-player aspect is one of the best I've ever found, finishing with another player is a very special moment. So glad you enjoyed your first TGC experience!

I remember beating this game for the first time and sitting in silence after, crying and just feeling at so much emotion. This is a work of art! It’s timeless!

Unbelievable this game is over 10 years old now. I remember only seeing a picture of it in the PlayStation 3 online library and being intrigued so I downloaded the free demo.
All that was needed for me to get the full game was walking up the first hill and seeing the title and hear the music play (at 4:35) Later I got the collectors edition for PS4 that comes with Flow and Flower.
Fun fact: This is the very first video game that had it's entire soundtrack nominated for a Grammy Award. And it spawned the debate whether or not video games can be considered art.
There is no written text or narration, no way to communicate with the other players you meet along the way. And yet you do get what the story of the game is, this game like art is about emotions and whatever you feel while making this beautiful journey is the most important thing. (I cry every time I hear the first notes played of the main theme or "I Was Born For This" that you unfortunately had to mute at the end). Definitely play this until you have gotten all trophies, you will find some nice Easter eggs and some more story details. 🥲👍

This is a beautiful game. The first time I finished was with another player and it was surprisingly emotional.

Oddly enough, I just never got around to playing this game over the years. I had seen sooo many clips of it that I figured I'd seen the gist of it, and for whatever reason assumed it was like a 4-5 hour game. I had no idea it was actually so short, yet it definitely didn't feel like an hour and a half (your video felt longer, possibly cause you traveled to so many places along the way? 🤷🏻‍♂️).
Anyways, point is that in watching your playthrough, it was the first time I'd actually seen a full playthrough and thus felt like I kinda went on the same journey. Funny enough though I had bought the soundtrack like a decade ago, it really elevates this game.
