I put a 5,000mAh power bank battery inside an iPod

- A while back I made a video on how I upgraded the battery inside the 4th generation iPod with a 3,000mAh smartphone battery and massively increased the runtime. Today, we're going one step further and putting a 5,000mAh cell from a literal power bank into the iPod's thicker sibling for even more power!
Here's the original video where I show how the mod is done:

can i connect a 10,000 mAh power bank to my brain to keep me awake in college?
Sure! You'll need a cranial opening pick, an iFlash Neuro, an SD card with at least 256MB capacity, and a soldering iron. Might as well put a Taptic Engine in there too while you're inside.
I did the 955565 5000mAh in my 4th Gen Photo 40G. I was able to fit a full size SD to micro in the ATA1 , I just bent the ground point from under the battery plug over slightly. Removed the generic BMS and soldered the ipod BMS right on. The shape is perfect, i use a foam insulator and seat it right on the board. (just like the old hard drive usually sits. The weight of the battery is pretty much the same as the old hard drive. Im taking it with me on Holiday and will see if it makes it the entire 5 days without charge. Thanks for the tutorials!!.
That is cool, I remember when iPods came out, cool kids in school would have them. I would rock my tiny cheap mp3 player as I was pour teenager 😂 (I did have a few SD cards and a soldered a housing for AA battery) as AAA didn't provide long life. So would have a pack of rechargeable Nimh batteries 😅
What Temp should I be at when doing something like this myself? I'm somewhat new to soldering
Usually it should work at 200ºC (392ºF).
Could it be wired directly to the iPod's battery connector, instead of wiring the battery to the board?
No, it has to be running through a BMS board first.
That is a really great mod! How heavy is the iPod now compared to a stock model? And do you know a source for new, good quality iPod cases? I’ve been off-and-on looking for a 5G case, I’ve only found terrible fake leather ones, or questionable AliExpress listings. I used to have a lot of accessories, but due to attrition and wear I’ve only got my old iPod Socks left (and being super careful), but I’d take it everywhere again if I had a case like the one in the video.
With flashmod, 5,000mAh battery, and a Taptic Engine, the iPod weighs 187 grams (for reference, an unmodified 40GB monochrome iPod 4th generation weighs 176 grams). The case I'm using in the video is the iSee by Contour, there's also a 5th gen version but they stopped selling those a while ago. I found mine as new-old stock on eBay.
I've seen some clear cases for the iPod 5th gen on eBay before but they have no branding.
Now put PD in it and make it work as a power bank :P
What does PD mean

thanks!
Thanks
Do you know for certain that the AliExpress batteries 03:20 are the same as what is in the juice battery charger? I've heard hear-say on other forums about batteries being miss labeled with exaggerated mAh #s, such as the 3000 mAh batteries performing more like an 1800 mAh battery. Do the 5000 mAh "AliExpress batteries" perform similar to the Juice Brand Charger battery?
What is the model number of the "Juice Brand" battery power bank? Could you post a link of where I could find this specific power bank?
Hi from the iPod Discord! I’m the guy that mentioned your video as it was uploading lmao
I tried taking the 5000mah battery shown in this video 03:10 and installing it into an IPod Classic 5.5 gen. No luck. The battery + the iFlash Solo card are too thick stacked on each other together to close the IPod case. 😞
huge increase
How do you charge your 4th gen? Will sync cord charge yours?
I have a FireWire charger at my desk, but I also charge by connecting to the USB port on a PC. Some older iPods won't charge off certain wall adaptors unless they supply 3.3V on the USB data pins.
@@NekoMichi My 4th gen won't charge from wall wart or PC sync cable. PC sync cable icon says charging but it's actually depleting battery. Firewire charges fine. iflash-ata1 works great. Replaced battery with stock. My use case is listening to music for cross country 72 hour drives so I need a car charger that works.
And I thought I had the record when I put a 3500 Note 10 battery in my 4th gen! Although I didn't mod my iflash board; I just used the thick housing and it all barely fits.
Thanks to you I was able to mod an LG battery, Glad I subscribed! Keep up the good content!

Awesome video! Ordered all the pieces and started my ipod modding journey. This is a weird question where did you get the clear case for your ipod? Ive tried looking but cant find anything that looks right 😂
The case is the Contour iSee, I found new-old stock on eBay.
Do you know if there's is an upper limit to the battery capacity, the thickness of the case notwithstanding? I was thinking about designing a thicker 3D printed back case for my 5th gen ipod for a really big battery upgrade.
I don't think the iPod itself would have a maximum limit in terms of battery capacity. The only limit is the physical space.
I need this but for a 3DS battery, that thing barely lasts 6 hours now
brb, modding a 3DS with an iPad battery.
one issue i see with this is the weight. i followed your tutorial and put a 3000mah battery inside my 4th gen, and it weighted about the same as an unmodified 3rd gen with its 20GB hard drive. so if you're going for practical, then 3000mah is about as high as I'd go, and perhaps even the commerical 2000mah 4th gen batteries that you can buy and install without soldering are the better option. as a project this is very cool to see though :)
You're right, both weight and weight distribution have been challenges. When I first flashmodded an iPod 4th gen, I immediately noticed that it was lighter, but not in a good way. It turned out not only was it lighter, but the centre of gravity had also shifted towards the top of the iPod so when I held it in my hands it felt like it wanted to tip over from the top.
One of the hidden benefits of the 3000mAh mod I haven't talked much about was restoring that centre of gravity so that the iPod felt more balanced when being held. With the 5000mAh mod this was also factored in except I noticed that after modding, the iPod was actually around 10 grams heavier than when unmodified and weight distribution felt slightly more back-heavy. I can see how some people might take some getting used to with this.
That being said, it's still lighter than an iPhone 15 Pro.
@NekoMichi absolutely, I think the 3000mah mod emulates the feel and weigt distribution of a stock ipod perfectly which I quite like, but i did notice it definitely had more of a presence in my pocket when i carried it around, especially compared to my first gen nano when previously the weight felt similar with the 4th gen just having a bigger footprint
Please do this mod on a 20GB thick iPod Classic 2nd Gen. The 1st and 2nd Classics are the models that really need a battery life improvement!
This might work! With an iFlash Quad flashmod, I can free up quite a bit of space in a 1st or 2nd gen that can be used with a larger battery. The only tricky part is the flashmodding process, the 1st and 2nd gen lose the ability to transfer data over FireWire after being flashmodded.
@NekoMichi the 1st and 2nd gens are compatible with the 3rd gen's drives so you could put a slim 3rd gen drive into a thick second gen housing (thus keeping the 20GB capacity and preserving the ability to sync) and that would leave at least some room for the new battery
Just started making my own version of this today with a 5th gen after finding an unused power bank.
Were you successful?
Could you post a video on RUclips of your results? I just saw this particular video tonight and I'm already getting excited to try this on my IPod Classic 5th Gen. Were you able to duplicate the 70+ hour battery life in your 5th Gen?
@@eric6345 Yes, it did work, however you need the thick back casing on the ipod. I didnt. The battery didnt fit and now im still waiting for one to arrive from aliexpress.
Okay sick, I have an iPod Classic 5th Gen and i'd love to do something like this.
Also, what is that transparent case you have? thats awesome.
It's the iSee case by Contour.
Did you end up trying this on your IPod Classic 5th gen? If so, what were your results? I want to do something similar to my IPod 5th gen as well.
@@eric6345 No actually, my ipod lives in a dock in my garage when I do woodwork lol/ maybe one day.
