I find it weird that they removed the one optional rule that was already there with the white dice. That was a fun rule that I always played with. It gave you more options and strategy without really adding any complexity to teaching.
If you haven't played it, everyone got 2 white dice they roll and place with the rest. They play into wins and ties like any color but are owned by no one. So you could place white dice to block someone with a tie and then win with a lower number of dice of your color.

I think they did that because one of the mini games has that option of grabbing some neutral, gray dice without pips that basically function like the white dice would have on the original game. That said, I agree, the white dice were better.

      Hi Dan,
Do you think it would be possible to add the rule you are talking about as a house rule? Would this still play smootly you think?

I had liked the idea of dice placement actions, until I saw an example of them... I feel they make the once quick moving game feel more complex than it should be.

I like this version waaay more than the original. The components could have been better, but that's Alea for you. The game is much more fun.
I think Tom got a few things wrong so check the rules before playing.

Not sure what people mean by ugly. How much pizzazz do you need for a simple dice-rolling game? The gameplay is awesome and the new abilities sound fun.

They mean the game looks ugly compared to the original which was very simple and elegant. The euro power tiles look even worse.

Tom should have spoken more about the chips, which can be added to the original game. If you don't spend the chips, they are worth $1000 (or ws it $10,000?). Anyways, I jut threw some cheap poker chips into my 2nd edition, to add this amazing new rule/mechanism.

Always placing banknotes in pairs and assigning them to the casinos from lowest to highest? Weird. That didn't work that way in the old version.

Seriously, how do people find this ugly? I mean, the worst you can say about it is that it's bland or boring but there's nothing particularly ugly about it in my opinion.

It is definitely ugly and harder to tell the different dice areas apart unlike the original. The new euro tiles look just as bad as they do in euro games. It also looks busy and less elegant.

Maybe Tom's glowing review will drop the price of the boulevard expansion and allow me to finally get it

Any issues with adding a 6th player (set of dice)?

The original is still the best.
The second printing is just like the original but comes in an awkward cube shaped box.
This version is just plain ugly all around. I'd prefer the previous editions by far despite the 2nd edition box.

Hard pass. The original was fine and didn't need to become needlessly complicated.

This is literally the original game with one of the expansions included, that is completely optional. Sorry to rain on your negativity.

@@Arjay82 Hard pass here as well, thankfully I own the original. Compared to the original this overly complicates a simple and elegant game. Expansions do this to many games as well.

@@Arjay82 no, the rules for the base game are different here. It's not 1:1.

Original ugly game became much uglier. The new look makes me sick.
