Pretty good time saver. If you’re going to Gallery Place-Chinatown on the red line, and want to get out to transfer to the green and yellow line, or for the Capital One Arena, or any area near it, sit at the front of the train if going towards Glenmont, or the back if going towards Shady Grove. It’ll stop you right where the station exit is, saving you from doing a lot of unnecessary walking and fighting the crowds of people trying to get on the train
Actually Metro is pretty easy to use overall. Just returned from DC 1st time there and it's a great asset to have at your disposal. If you're in a station and confused just STOP & take your time to look for which direction you need to go. The trains have it displayed on the driver's carriage what its final destination is. IIRC each carriage has a Metro map on show too.
I never knew that about the lines being on top on the map and in the actual station - although I don't go to multi line stations like Metro Center too much, but when I do I always have to figure out whether or not I have to go upstairs or downstairs to catch my next train - Thanks Rob!
I’m going to WMATA territory And specifically Silver Springs on a transit fan trip crazy as that may sound in a couple weeks for only my 2nd ever visit to the region and the tip about overlay on the Metro Rail map actually seems legit useful
I actually knew that the line on top on the metro map was the line on top in the station. My mother didn’t know that and almost ended up getting back on the same train……
Another example of the metro map not being to scale is the stretch from Brookland-CUA to Fort Totten and Fort Totten to Takoma, which is depicted as being one of the longest stretches in the system when it's really not far at all.
No, rail only. Definitely check the math on that because you'd need to take a ton of rides over 4 days to make the $60 pass worth it vs. paying per ride.
@@TripHacksDC Thanks for the info we are planing one long round trip to Dulles Air and Space ($9.20 Each way) so it would be better to by the one day pass i think for that day. the rest of the time it will just be from the georgia/petworth Station to the Mall and back to National Airport
1-day pass might be worth it for that scenario, just be aware that Udvar Hazy is a very long trip from downtown by public transit (around 2 hours each way). If part of that trip is on a Fairfax county bus your pass won't cover that part of the ride.
My advice as an outsider is to heavily study the WMATA Fares pages Perhaps there’s been changes since the question was posed but the website infers a combo rail and bus pass is available
If you want EVEN MORE Metro content, episode 5 of the Trip Hacks DC Podcast is all about Metro. www.triphacksdc.com/podcast5
Metro Is Super Useful.

Never knew about the map showing what stations are on top! Awesome hack! Thanks, Rob!!!
It's a simple yet useful hack.

It's a good one to know for those situations where seconds makes the difference between making or missing the transfer.

Great example.
Archives Navy Memorial Penn Quater to Gallery Place Chinatown is also a pretty big stretch
@@isntabelle I wouldn’t say that… they’re only 0.36 miles apart. In fact it’s one of the shortest gaps between stations in the system
Metro Center and Federal Triangle is a little stretch
Also did you know that the distance between Gallery Place Chinatown and Metro Center is so short, You can see Metro Center at Gallery Place Chinatown
There's an alternate version of the route map on the Wikipedia entry for the DC Metro
It was so nice in Washington summer 2018, july the fourth. Mh.
Glad to hear you had a good trip.
Trip Hacks DC does the $60 7 day Metro pass work on buses also? we will be in town for 4 days and only using the metrorail and buses to get around

Nice Video! But I did notice there are 9 transfer stations, not 8.
Is there an app on Wmata
There are a bunch of Metro apps. I like MetroHero dcmetrohero.com
DCRIDER is also a good app, as well as google maps or the Transit app
