"Lies" is a song written by Beau Charles and Buddy Randell, performed by The Knickerbockers; the single was produced by Jerry Fuller. It reached #20 on the U.S. pop chart in 1965. It was featured on their 1966 album Lies and is famous for often being mistaken for a Beatles track due to its similarities to their style and harmonies.
Here is what original Knickerbockers member Beau Charles said about the song's behind-the-scenes story:
"We desperately tried to write something that sounded like the British Invasion'. We wrote 'Lies' in less than one half hour. We demo-ed it in New York." After a Jerry Fuller inspired re-arrangement, the track was recorded at Sunset Sound in West Hollywood with Bruce Botnick as the Engineer. Things were not quite right, so the multi-track master was taken to Leon Russell's house in Hollywood Hills. Jerry Fuller knew Leon and "Leon had this great little studio - just a four track". The band recorded the vocals there and overdubbed a new guitar part that was recorded from a beat up old Fender guitar amp that gave the guitar sound a meaty, edgy feel".

One correction, my brother & I arranged “lies”! Jerry Fuller came in one night to the Red Velvet & told me that we were recording “lies” in 2 days & to put it together & make it about 2:30 minutes! The original demo we did in NY was only 1:30! So John & I worked on it & I added the guitar solo & another verse & chorus. The day of the session we ran it by Buddy & he adjusted the lyrics to the new arrangement. It worked!! That night as we listened to a rough mix it was obvious that we had something. What a moment to remember! Thanks for your comments!

My mother gave two of the Knickerbockers and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders a ride to the Fairgrounds in Louisville with half a dozen kids in the back of the car after they missed the bus from the Holiday Inn to the concert back in 1966. A group of kids saw them in our car as we approached the coliseum and started running after us. I was ten years old at the time, and I felt like I was in "A Hard Day's Night."

I think I was in 6th grade when this came out / was my fav song for about 10 days - a record amount of time for a fav back then bc so many great artists & songs! I particularly liked the unusual segway cord & strumming b4 the title lyrics sung.

I was 14 when it came out but didn't hear it till it appeared on the Nuggets album (it was never a hit here in UK). Tracks with this amount of energy never grow old, they just mature like fine wine.
These guys, the Beatles, the Byrds were the first bands to use the Rickebacker guitar for their sound and to mimic the sound of other bands of the era. This dude is playing a 360 series Rick, so easy for Beatles to hear a similar sound to their own....same type of short, tight, punchy, lyrical, distinctive guitar hook, etc. Love those Ricks.

Always love these musical appearances where the band sounds SO great, then you look and see- they don't have any mics!
I saw them perform live in San Francisco in May 1968. They were in a dance hall with a lot of single young women who liked to dance.

We magically hear them sing today though 50 years ago this was recorded with no microphones.

I imagine it might be frustrating sometimes, in your mundane, everyday interactions, when (for example) the convenience store clerk says to you "Move aside, buddy, there are other customers waiting." I know you would comply, but be tempted to think (but not say) "Hey, man, I was in a band that was huge around here. People stood up and cheered for us! We had hit records that I wrote! What an underrated and underplayed GEM/classic of a song from the best decade of rock and roll music... the 60's. Did not know these guys were from North Jersey... my home state... although I reside in the Southern region.
They do actually sound quite a bit like the Beatles... and the lead vocalist's voice does sound pretty close to John Lennon's voice at times.

We used to go to the Excelsior House near Albany NY to hear them. The drummer Jimmy Walker later sang as a member of the Righteous Brothers when Bill Medley stopped.

That sax sure took a hammering… not ! What a great band they were. The B side to this was just as good called The Coming Generation. Loved one of their other singles even more called High On Love.

Another find by Jerry Fuller , songwriter that wrote most of Ricky Nelson’s hits and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap ( another discovery)
Growing up in the 60's they did sound like the Beatles. Also Dave Clark 5 and the Searchers all had the Beatles- Mersey beatsound. The Guitarist and Bass player are brothers Beau Charles Guitar and John Charles bass and Beau's riffs on that Rick are sweet. The lead vocalist Buddy Randell played a mean sax. Buddys also co wrote the song Short Shorts I think as he was a member of the Royal Teens? Buddy passed way to young in 1998. I thought they were the Beatles when I was a kid. They sound amazing but look like a bunch of accountants. Nice suits and very clean cut. Now all they need is to put a bowl on their heads and get it cut like the Beatles.

Impressive that they were able to copy The Beatles' sound so well but I have a feeling this schtick would have grown old fast.
Are you kidding me , they outrocked the beatles. They bass player, the drums, the RIchenbacher guitar with those tasty hooks, the howls., a classic pop, rock, song that shamed the Beatles in the running, but due to radio play it was shadowed. Just like a lot of pop when Brititsh took over the am pop back then.
Thanks for your comment, we loved the Beatles & vocally we sound similar but we didn’t play like them! Three of us were born in New York & were rooted in east coast music of all kinds! We played harder! The rascals were like that too! We toured with them in ‘66! We enjoyed each other’s performance’s immensely! Thankyou for your comment!
They had TWO great hits (this is one of them) and should have gone onto bigger things if they could have ditched the 50's haircuts and tried to look more like The BYRDS.
Yah and read their history...BAD Management...BAD RECORD Company ... NOT UNCOMMON Problems. : (
