you've been told a lot about Sota already, so i think it'll be me who answers your questions about BE:FIRST as a whole 🤣
BE:FIRST was formed in August 2021 through an audition called THE FIRST (it's here on youtube and subbed, if you ever feel like watching. super interesting stuff for an insight on the jpop industry and how their agency subverts tradition), so they didn't train together. in fact they hit the ground running and started activities immediately after (they released a pre-debut single called Shining One which is a pop anthem and the dance is super fun!), and debuted in November 2021 with Gifted., so they've been together for only 2 and a half years.
as for positions, some jpop groups do it the kpop way, but BE:FIRST doesn't have assigned positions. everyone does everything (although obviously, as you could tell, Sota gets a lot of stand out parts, but usually they try to take turns within the song and they rotate centers/featured members across their discog)
as for the members, a little rundown with ages + what they're wearing in the dance practice. most of them trained at performing arts academies/schools and other than Sota they aren't "dance studio only" trained dancers, and focused on both dancing and singing instead.
-Sota (23, black sweatpants and hoodie)
-Manato (23, black sweatpants and black hoodie with the white U) started dancing at 9. he also studied in NYC for a year when he was 13-14 focusing on dancing. we call him the honor student, he's just perfect at everything lol he's usually considered the backbone of the group and the "all rounder" (even though most of them are all rounders now)
-Shunto (20, brown tracksuit with beanie) started dancing at 6 years old. he has a similar style to Sota and in a way he's his protegee within the group. i highly recommend watching their tiktoks together to get a feel of their dynamic as dancers.
-Ryuhei (17, white sweatpants and basketball tank top) started dancing at 5. he attended the same school as Shunto and has a pretty similar background, but he's a very different kind of dancer. he's definitely more into contemporary and lyrical, has a more "fluid and soft" sort of style
-Leo (25, Giants baseball shirt) started dancing at 15/16. he is just a big golden retriever puppy even when he dances lol
-Ryoki (25, black sweatpants with the "davryu" inscription and black long sleeved t-shirt) was actually an actor before he joined the group. as far as we know he doesn't have any formal experience (as in, he didn't attend any performing arts school or dance studio) but we think he probably took some lessons here and there and he's also a big kpop fan who did a lot of dance covers on his spare time (he has a youtube channel if you wanna check them out lmao). we call him the firecracker because of his explosive energy on stage but that also clearly translates to his dancing
-Junon (25, grey sweatpants and camo sweatshirt) had no experience in anything prior to joining the group. no training, no nothing. he used to stick out like a sore thumb at the beginning and now you barely notice him, he should be studied 🤣
these guys definitely shine when they perform on stage, so i definitely recommend you check a live performance. maybe they don't go as hard on the dancing when they're doing a live 2 hour concert, but they're a very different breed.

your analysis is so detailed and professional!! I'm a fan of them for 6 months now and it seems that ever since Sota participates in the choreo the group gives a lot more priority to individuality than synchronization.
honestly I think they are so confident in themselves (their own styles) that they deliberately do not sync at these key moves XD
They remind me a little of ATEEZ in their early days (not movement quality per se but focusing on more individuality than synchronization!) I’m really excited to see more from this group!

His name is Sota and he has won World Hip Hop Dance Championship in 2015,2016,2018 and 2019 with his team called Kana-Boon! Sota choreographed all four performances starting at the age of 14. Kana-boon!’s performances are available on RUclips too! if you’re interested❤

(I scored them but my scores did not carry weight into their official ranking) They are incredible and I used to watch their routines to help me study for my certification with HHI! Jess what a lovely analysis! I'm no professional, but I took dance growing up for 15 years and this was a blast to watch you break down my fav group BE:FIRST! I'm sure as you can see in the comments a lot of people have mentioned how SOTA is a 4 time World Hip Hop dance champ with his team KANA-BOON, but surprisingly there is also the other end of the spectrum! Member Junon had zero dance experience until the training camp during the audition program THE FIRST in 2021, which built BE:FIRST, that's available on youtube with subs! Some members have some prior training, but I would say SOTA definitely has the strongest background out of the 7. But all the members have came a long way to get to this level, as BE:FIRST has only been around for about 3 years now.
I'd love to see you breakdown more of their dances, particularly Mainstream and Gifted (orchestra version or original), and Mili-Bili. There are plenty of others as well, but lets start there! haha! Anyways, thank you for taking a hour out of your day to make this video! I'll be subscribing and hoping for more BE:FIRST content!

@@jess_holyfield Sotas last coreography with them was in 2021, as he left the dance troupe in 2021 to audition for BE:FIRST, but he coreoed for them the 4 years prior! Still, very cool you got to shadow judge them! I’m not familiar with HHI, but im sure studying them helped!

Thank you for finding BE:FIRST! I found your commentary very interesting.
SOTA was a choreographer and dancer who had led his dance team to World hip hop championship victories five times. So he’s good at making their perform perfectly “clean”.
but as BE:FIRST they dont aim for synchronization too much, but values individuality. They only sync up the important parts. They believe the most important thing is to sync up the “vibes and energy” within the team.
Their live performance is better than their MV and recording.
Highly recommended!

Takumi the leader of the CyberAgent Legit and Sota are close friends. they danced together posted to Instagram a lot about 4 or 5 years ago Two really talented dancers/choreographers

@@jess_holyfield if you look up "D.U.N.K. BMSG wiki" the first result should be the fandom wiki page where it's thoroughly explained! it's a bit hard to grasp lol but basically it's a festival where artists collab with one another, and it's centered around dance.
TJBB was invited for the last edition, where the video that OP shared is from. this video was a "dance battle" where LDH artists (TJBB's agency) and BMSG artists (BE:FIRST's agency) competed (mostly for fun, not a real battle lol pretty choreographed)
Cyber Agent Legit / TJBB's Takumi is a close friend of Sota's, they danced together many times before they went professional (artists lol).
