Hunter froze. "Okay?" He held out his hand. Willow took it and placed his hand on her sternum. He could feel the steady thrum of her heartbeat under his hand, the confirmation that she was, in fact, alive. Willow then took his other hand and pressed it to his chest. The beating in his chest was unlike hers, a steady pulse of crackling magic rather than the rhythmic thumping in Willow's, but the similarity was undeniable.
"See? We're the same." Willow said, placing her hands on top of Hunter's.
Hunter looked up into Willow's eyes, and he could feel the betrayal of his own pulse quickening as he met her soft gaze. Hunter gasped softly as he felt Willow's heartbeat quicken as well. Willow smiled, gazing into Hunter's eyes as their hearts (or whatever was in Hunter's chest as a replacement) beat in unison, only beating faster the longer they stared at each other.
Hunter felt his face flush, and he quickly broke away, the moment over.
Curse his inability to keep control over his own expressions and hide that stupid crush that he was definitely going to refuse to acknowledge for the rest of his life. Oh, well. That's what spending most of your life behind a mask does to you.
A few months ago, Hunter had been forced to come to terms with just how replaceable he was, but now? He was beginning to question that. After all, The Captain had been right about a lot of things. She probably wasn't wrong about this one.
